Wonderful memories. I was 20 yrs. old then and all these drivers, cars and teams, were my heros. I was at Daytona and Sebring that year. It was a fantastic time to be a sports car racing fan. Thank you for this video and the memories it brings !

As of January 2021, the winning drivers of Hans Hermann and Richard Attwood are still alive; at ages 92 and 80. Considering the dangers of motorsports of that era and their respective ages, that's remarkable!

Richard Attwood appeared in an episode of "The Grand Tour" (can be seen on Amazon), racing against James May, in an original Porsche 917... And...he was very quick! :-)

Dickie looked fine at a recent Goodwood bash. He And David Hobbs are ETERNAL! How is David Piper? He must be 90+ if he's still with us. Mario is still Mario.... Tony Brooks passing took the LAST of the 1950s GP winners from us... Missing Stirl... Amazing just who DID survive.... 1964 to 1973 I only saw Canadian Comstock GT-40 driver John MacLean buy the farm at the Hairpin, Sebring, 1966.... A wheel came off right in front of our eyes... Green smoke sufficated him... Lexan windows, roll over doors, Sand bank, all added up to TRAGEDY... Inept Sebring Fire Dept. Deputies with cattle pods forced us away, while he was still hammering away, inside... We need an AXE! None to be found. Our MGB's brass knock off hammer just bounced off the damned thing. We went home before the later tragedy at The Websters.... We had seen enough.... Carried a duble bitted axe and a sledge hammer to Daytona, 1967 and subsequent races. Useful for breaking up packing crates to BURN Freezing cold 1968 24 Hours, 18 and 24F seen in the infield. But they were never needed again, for the other purpose thank God! Despite a few AIRBORNE events off the banking, a couple years later.. RACING! J.C.

Growing up, I always had a soft spot for the 512 due to me watching Steve McQueens movie Le Mans almost everyday when I was young. However as I got older, I’ve fallen in love with the 312p. It just looks so gorgeous, especially in the configuration seen here!

Absolutely gorgeous! That pictures are wonderful, Perhaps my best loved race in motorsport. What a luck that it was indirectly well documented in the famous film. The film was fine, I liked it, but IMO the star was the real footage of that precious race.

Absolutely wonderful photo's! A joy to watch. As a yearly visitor from 2004 onwards, it is wonderful to see how charmingly simple everything was back then. Very little distance between the track and the vistors. So accessible and a sort of chaotic entourage. Less buildings and of course the straight Hunaudieres. Things have changed a lot at Le Mans, even in recent years. The entourage on the circuit has become more professional, but also lost a bit of its French charm. No complaining though, still a hell of a wonderful event!

The Ford factory stopped developing the GT40 and pulled out of FIA racing after 1967, when the Ford GT Mk IV won Le Mans. John Wyer Racing continued developing and racing the conventional (non-Mk IV) Ford GT, and managed to win in both 1968 and 1969. The same chassis won both races - the only chassis ever to win Le mans more than once. But, really, the Porsche 908s were quicker and more efficient, and probably 'should' have won in both years. In 1969, the first Porsche 917s were easily the fastest things on the track, but had enough fundamental technical issues that they weren't ready to win, yet.
