Fun fact: James Gandolfini got a phone call in the middle of the night from a mob associate. The conversation was short and to the point. The mob guy said “we like what your doing. But a Don never wears shorts.” The line was worked into one of the episodes.

That was all fabrication. Michael has stated in pervious covers about the Sopranos that, that is not true and the Don or the boss can basically wear what he wants. And the original story was it was in a shop someone told James that.

If u go to Trainland in Lynbrook, there's a big sign outside saying "Sopranos episode 85 was filmed here, this is where Bobby got whacked". If u go inside, they have display cases with props, photos, autographs, and memobillia from the scene they filmed there and it's really cool to go through all that

I think he kept him out because Silvio’s character as far as casting was like a spoof of a typical wiseguy. My grandmother was "about to die" for about ten years! She managed to never be sent to a "retirement community" and passed away in her own bed. I sat beside her all through her last night, when she was unconscious. The last time we spoke was a week before that, when she called me on the phone and gave it to me "for not calling my father" more often! Livia and Junior remind me a lot of my grandparents. My grandad was not bitter and mean like Junior, he was always laughing and playing with us kids, but he wore the same glasses and bald head as Junior.

Michael, I had not seen The Sopranos until this past Thursday. I've been watching episodes back-to-back, a marathon. It's magnificent ! I completed the first season, thirteen episodes, over the last two days. It's so damned extraordinary that I can't stop watching it ! I laughed my ass off when Carmela said, "You know Tony, it's a multiple choice thing with you. I can't tell if you're old-fashioned, paranoid, or just a fucking asshole." All the best, Michael.

Call me a sadist or a schadenfreude lover but Tony's crazy, effed up marriage with Carmela was why I watched the show. It was great but at the same time, added some realism. In fact, one episode or two gathered a few Emmy nominations solely based on the Tony/Carmela conflicts.

Sopranos isn't just cloned. It in many ways freed up television plot structure on a whole. If you watch almost any series before the sopranos, they are so cookie cutter and similar. Post sopranos you had the clones, but also a lot of shows were given structural freedom. It really is amazing. Nerd out.

After Sopranos we got Six Feet Under, Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men, True Detective, Lost, etc. The only shows before Sopranos that you could give major props to are NYPD Blue, Twin Peaks, maybe you could say Twilight Zone, etc. But after the Sopranos we got so much amazing television content. It changed the way TV was perceived.

Tony and Silvio had the best and most trustworthy relationship in that entire show now that I think about it, I remember only one instance where things got a little shaky and it was practically nothing.. but for the most part Tony had serious issues with every single player on his team (including his actual family). I agree that the psychiatrist's presence was unrealistic, but her role in the story is a window into Tony's character. She is necessary as a literary device. If it were a book, instead of a TV series, she would likely not be in the story. In a book, you can read about a character's innermost thoughts (first person, omniscient, or 3rd person limited). In a movie, you can only develop a character by what he says, what he does, and what others say about him. Even more so, if the show was narrated instead of him seeing someone to let the thoughts out, it would pull from the character of Tony. Chase could’ve written the show with the exclusion of Melfi in the regard that he was just narrating to an audience, but that is so unlike his character that it would seem unnatural. I don’t think Chase strived for it to be the most accurate depiction of a mafioso family, but with the inclusion of a psychiatrist, it helped ground Tony’s issues to where instead of speaking to the psychiatrist, you kind of feel like he’s talking to you about his issues, especially within the first season of the show.

Melfi represented the audience and the therapy sessions was Tony talking about his life directly to the audience, giving us insight on how he thinks during the scenes. Melfi’s therapist represents the creator, David Chase. Her therapy sessions represents the creator talking to the audience about how we perceive Tony and how we wanna glorify and see him succeed even tho he is so evil.

Initially yes during the run of the show the shrink played well, but in reruns or the box set I have, I fast forward through the shrink scenes. They didn't age well and become a distraction from the drama and comedy.

Honestly this show is so consistent. after season 1 you think, nothing will top this. after season 2, alright nothing will stop this! then season 3 and 4 are so fantastic but in some different aspects. and season 5 an 6 just set up the excellent finally. Powerful storytelling throughout and amazing in each season in their own rights and awesome characters carrying on through it all. I would love to know what friendships Michael had with anyone not part of the life like tony and Artie.

I think the idea of Tony seeing a psychiatrist was a mechanic that added to the tension and was compelling because we are all watching wondering how he is going to avoid telling anything that could be too revealing to that life. And then that became a big deal later with Braco’s character defending doctor-client privilege and how she was caught over her own loyalty to these two different groups. Also how these well educated psychiatrists and family were then seen to be arrogant and saw Tony’s case as an amusement to them, and we are left feeling more sympathy for Tony, or at least questioning: who are the good guys? Are we all just as bad,as flawed as each other or just the same, really?

A great show is a great show. If he didn't watch it all it must have been because he got bored with it, which is astonishing to me, but there it is. Let's face it, real life is mostly tedious - I think authenticity in art is overrated for that reason. There can't be many gangsters that come up with funny lines as often as the characters in the show, for example, but that's one of the things we love about the Sopranos.
