I've been drawing portrait using pastel and colored pencils until I accidentally found MJS tutorial last March 2024 on Hyper realism, and immediately jump on it, bought acrylic and oil paint, and start practicing his technique, It's really awesome. My drawing is not as good as him but I love it. Thanks Michael!!

With a little bit of information about mixing colors, can help to know how to reach that tone. The mid green for the foliage is perfect to the other part of canopy of the tree. Is amazing the detail in yours paintings. Is real Realism !

I get a painting to a certain point and then worry about adding more as I just know I’m going to spoil it. Often when I know adding a little foreground interest to push the scene back would be better. I did one recently of a seashore with mountains and I though to myself WOW I didn’t paint that it actually works. It’s that rare effort that looks like something when I’m still very much learning not to make a mess, ha-ha. I’ve learned not buy expensive canvases, but still use good book canvas paper from Loxley. That way, I’m not so afraid to try. I know not to buy every colour I can lay my hands on now. I’m learning to colour mix with twelve colours only. Not really expensive paints, but passable quality ones because you get nicer saturation and more predictable shades when you mix. I try to paint one or two pictures a week and just take my time. But normally it’s time that’s restricting naturally. And it’s not a race. I get confused with all the mediums you can use. I’d love to get a bit more gloss into my paintings but I need them to dry quickly. I’m tending to go for pastel shades not deliberate but seems to be better for me. The Lake District holds so many precious memories for me, like thousands of people I used try to draw and paint when little, and loved buying Lakeland colour pencils when on holiday. But I didn’t start trying regularly until very late in my life. I WISH I had kept painting back then. But life gets in the way. When all you need do is respect your feelings and make time for your hobby. Sad really.

Hi Michael, I’m finding it hard to start my project, I’ve got everything set up but just can’t get started. Do you have a video of how you set out your pencil drawings on the canvas before you start applying paint please? This will really help as facing a blank canvas is a bit daunting.

Please Michael. Why do you choose the neutral grey as the surrounds, why is it so important - or not and why do you think that is better than the neutral brown?

I'm having issues with making leaves/foliage. After adding the base colour, when I try dabbing lighter colours, the base colour sticks to my brush and the yellows/lighter greens are not being applied.
