Marshall was outstanding with their solid/hybrid state stuff back n the day. I had a Valvstate 80..something stereo combo that would roll heads, live and otherwise.

OD 1 is the best channel on it, I think. They nailed that one. Everything on 4 and boosted with a neutral Boss GE-7 with neutral EQ and level on full is really good.

I had a 9004 that sounded amazing on recordings. A 9001 was my workhorse for over 10 years. Can’t say how authentic it sounded, but I loved it. Having said that, I knew a guy who had the JMP-1 with matching power amp and I lusted after that rig.

It is which is why after watching this video I went and bought one. I find it need more hight end but it's easy to get off your power amp. I boost it with an Eq in front boosting in the mids like upside down V shape. Love it and want another one for live use now. Feels amazingly touch sensitive.

according to the 9004 manual, the front headphones out is "filtered", i.e. speaker simulated and to be used as either a headphones out or a recording out - I don't own the 9004 (yet), so I can't say anything about its quality used that way

The 9004 was my first "real" amp/pre-amp. (Still have it, BTW). Upgraded to an ADA MP-1/Alesis .50Cal + rig (Also still have, minus the .50 +). Good stuff!

This days I play thru a solid state rig for my practice which is peavey tanstube preamp out into SPX90 -> Korg SDD delay into a BIG Yamaha PA amp (400w) into two mesa 1x12. Sounds very good but the thing is I like the sharp attack of the note and my Marshalls can have a bit of rest! (This started as Wet side rig, I plugged the peavey just cos.... you know why not?!). So I totally dig the small preamp you got there!

Thanks for this video! I used to be really curious about those 9000 series preamps when I was trying out the rack approach. Sounded pretty good to me; maybe I should have got one, lol. I also appreciated seeing the Lead 12 used in a preamp way. Kind of makes me wanna try out my Lead 15 Micro Stack the same way. I've never used the line out feature before and seeing this makes me think its worth trying.

It would be interesting to see much the power amp changes the sound. I really dig the sound of 9004 and JMP-1 with the VHT. I have a JMP-1 but with the valve state power amp. Thinking about buying a used 9100. Would be cool to try the VHT against a 9100 (or any other power amp for that matter...)

Mike, Good video series with the preamp rackmount stuff. Its a little foreign to alot of people who are not experienced with the rackmount gear. cool vid...the trick to tweaking the lead 12 is finding the sweet spot in the pre amp gain setting...try turn up first pre much higher than u normally would, and turn the master low down... love these amps.

0:33 - Cab sim wasn’t a thing back in 1990! You & I are the same age; the only Cab sim at the time was Palmer PDI boxes, which were super rare and hard to get; and maybe the H&K Redbox ... and none was so glorious anyway.

well, there was also the marshall se 100, but it apparently didn't have the coolness factor or hardly anyone noticed, the cab simulation was based on a groove tubes unit that van halen used allegedly. Still have to see and hear it in person though ;) hard to come by these days it seems

@@maxmustardman298 I had one of those too. I left it in consignment at a store and they went out of business with my unit. I had picked-up an early THD Hotplate and it sounded better. The SE-100 sounded thin and a bit nasal, it wasn’t a good match for the Peavey 5150 I had then. I still have that Hotplate. Lukather is the only guy I recall ever being seen with a SE-100. It would be fun to check one out now, ~25 years later. I was running a 5150, the SE-100, a GSP-21, and a 8008 power amp, into three ADA 2x12s.

@@maxmustardman298 The Hotplate can be a power soak or a full load, and has a line-out. It also has a bit of EQ to add some bass and/or some top end. The only thing it doesn’t have (compared to the SE-100) is the XLR out.

I had two Marshall Lead 12's back in the day. I think I blew out the speaker in the first one and the other is either back home, or at a friend's house. Great little practice/recording amp. I didn't appreciate it until much later on.

As much as I don't want to believe it, I think all the good distortion circuits have been exhausted. I think all these modern amps are just recycling old designs with a few more bells and whistles. Both rackmount preamps were indistinguishable from one another on my PC speakers. Both sounded great. Even the combo eventually sounded pretty good. You need to get your hands on a Groove Tubes soul-O 75 and see what you think. By far my favorite amp and it wasn't even touted for it's dirty (scream) channel. It was the fender style clean is what it was famous for. They also made a 3 channel preamp called the Trio but it didn't have the balls of the amp. The amp had a fat switch that made the dirty channel huge. When it was not engaged the dirty channel was bleh. The Trio kind of was like they split the amp channel into two halves and neither one worked as well as the amp version. One was kind of squashy and full of rich harmonics and the other was tight and generic brown sound. The amp seemed to combine those characteristics for a huge beefy brown sound that would turn any note into a pleasing overtone feedback that would hold as long as you did. Anyway. Great video!

Well, the Guv'nor was intended to be used into a (pre)amp. Using it as a preamp could actually cause impedance issues: According to electrosmash.com the Guv'nor's output impedance is about 22k Ohms and the VHT's data sheet states an input impedance of 100k Ohms - that might explain why it sounds horrible in this setup. The Lead 12 sounds amazingly good considering how cheap it is.

Ahhhh...... just saw this (older) video........ I thought it was the 'valve' preamp 9000 series you had....... which I owned and sadly sold before I received the JMP1 rack Preamp (according to the Marshall Rep, he assured me it was identical except for the programability)........I believed him unfortunately....... when I played the JMP1 for the first time and dialled in the clean selections, I was so disappointed. A different beast altogether. I miss the 9000 ....... Ah well.

I had a 9001 preamp about 15 years ago and I thought it was quite usable. Pretty sure Carcass used a Lead 12 on their Heartwork album blended with a 5150

My iPhone XR listening experience preferred the 9004 the best, especially with the kids scooped. I think scooped mids and the quick frequency spikes of solid state just work great. Seems like thrasher metal bands like Pentera would prefer solid state over the flabbier bass response of tubes.

I think the Shredmaster pedal would be a better fit for this comparison than the Guvnor
