Great bike mike I own blasters and my buddy had a 300 , both those bikes will dominate the Lakota sport 300 there much more aggressive the warrior I still have for my wife is faster then both blaster and 300ex great great bike but I think the 250ex models z250 would stack up better either way can’t wait to see the series man!

The blaster will win drag races with the 300ex nipping at its heels but the over all winner at the end of the day will be the 300ex they are a great rounded machine.

I got two brand new Lakotas in 1997 and still have them both. They have been rock solid over the years. They are both almost completely original. The only parts that have worn out over the years are the rear tires once, batteries several times, and clutch plates once. They need new chains now though, as they're loose and I'm out of adjustment. Can't argue with that after 26 years! Obviously I've done engine oil/filter and air filter changes.

That’s cool you picked up a Lakota 300. I’ve had two of them. One was a 2002 that picked up for a couple hundred bucks, fixed it up, and flipped it. The other one I still have. It needs a ton of work so it’s been on the backburner for a lil while now. I think it’s either a 2002 or 3. They are a great lil machine. Absolutely great for beginners. Yours is in such excellent condition. Blows my mind.

I love the Top Quad series and can't wait for the battle of the mid-range sport quads. It reminds me of the old days when magazines like Dirt Wheels and ATV Sport were a thing. They would always do shootouts between the various quads available back then. Haven't seen anything like that again until you started doing Top Quad 👍👍

I bought a brand new Mojave in 1987. Still got it today and she still looks minty fresh. Many inexpensive mods such as opening up the air box, rejecting, and mostly a KLR CDI, really make these run well.

My daughter rode a Honda 250EX for a few years and loved everything about it except the very stiff rear suspension . A couple years ago I bought her a Lakota 300 because it had longer travel suspension front and rear compared to the Honda . She loves the improved ride and I like the fact that the front end is heavier than the Honda so she is a lot less likely to loop out hillclimbing . It shifts stiff especially when the engine is cold . It was a roach when I bought it . I've done a top end , swingarm bearings , tires , carb work , air filter , rear fender , heated grips , clutch , battery , reinforced the battery hold-down , CDI module , chain and sprockets , and I took your advice and put a nice aftermarket aluminum front bumper from a 400EX on it !
@MichaelSabo
@MichaelSabo 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a nice little machine you made. From riding both as well, I agree the Lakota has much better suspension. I just may follow suite and make a 400EX bumper fit!

Love it. Just picked one of these up about 2 months ago, had been wanting for years for a fun easy trail machine. FYI, a Yamaha raptor/banshee/warrior rear hubs will fit on so you can go to a 4/115 pattern Aluminum wheel , and the front pattern on these is a 4/144 so you can also go the the same model Yamahas front wheel and go to a aluminum front wheel. Then you’ll have a lighter front/rear end and more tire options

Haha!!! I remember wanting one of these, among many other ATV's as a kid/teen. My father did purchase a Honda 300 utility. My friend a Bayou 220 and his brother had a Mojave 250. My cousin had a 1989 Honda 250X. All great machines. I pretty sure a few friends had blasters as well. I just remember liking my ATV because it had racks but it was not sporty enough and thought the Lakota would be perfect performance and some had a rear rack installed which would have been perfect since I used to load up camping gear on the weekends and take off into the woods.

I’ve owned a few mojaves and one thing I known is make sure you loctite the cam retainer bolts the caps will come loose and it will score the cams up and make sure the timing chain tensioner is working properly because with the double overhead cam set up the chain likes to stretch on these motors but other than that they are pretty reliable and fun for a 249cc motor the Kawasaki mojave was the most hi-tech atv on the market in 1987.

Video series idea… next top quad, 4 machines. 2 like in every way. Make, Year model and size. One gets high end upgrade parts. One gets low end upgrade parts. 4 quads 4 racers 2 separate platforms. You have shown the difference a rider can make. Now do a High-Low on upgrade parts. (Yes I know donut does this but would be awesome to see in this format).

The first thing I thought of was power shifting by holding the shifter all the way up , revving high, and then dropping it in gear. My Yamaha YFM225 would do it and suffered no ill affects. The Kawasaki 250 2-stroke Tecate 3 is more fun to dump the clutch on though...I had the parts to finish an 86 KX500 Tecate 3, but was not as well funded and as skilled a builder. I wish I had never sold them all (6).

I went to purchase a non-running Sportsman from a guy 2-3 hours away and while we were talking, I noticed he also had a broken CRF in the driveway and Lakota in the garage. Needless to say, I left with all three units! The bike just needed new handlebars and some plastics. The Lakota was missing the OEM carb and needed a new clutch kit, but it had PRM grab bar, dg bumper, skid plate and ran good with little effort... I always like riding quads that people have forgotten about these days. I have an Outlaw 525 IRS with the new body style raising eyebrows everywhere I go, lol. I need to find another one that needs some work.

If you put it in first gear bc hold the shift lever all the way up and rev the engine and then let the lever down instantly you can pop a wheelie I have a Yamaha bear tracker it’s a semi clutch and that’s how I do them great videos man I hope you see this

There's a guy selling a mostly original 1995 or 1997 Honda TRX300EX in almost new condition. I think just the grips and tires aren't stock. That thing looks mint. I think he's asking $3,500 for it. That would make a addition to the race series. It's on FB marketplace in mid Florida in case you are interested

Hold the shifter up from neutral and dump it with some throttle to launch it. Also can do this technique to pop wheelies in 1st and 2nd gear

I own a now 2 owner 91 Suzuki lt230. I rode it for about 50 miles on original tires, then let my son ride it, who never shifted gears. Hopefully it's the valves, but has the same semi auto with reverse.

As semiautomatic actually has a clutch but it's tied to the shifter when u shift up it disengages and then reingaged to get into the next gear

I remember when the Lakota first came out it had front and rear racks. Didn't change much during it's run but it was a machine I always wanted to get but never did. Pretty sure same motor as the Bayou 300, but the Lakota had a hotter cam. There were several builds over the years on these I can recall, one was done by the old forum site ATV Connection, probably can't find the write up anymore on it but if you could might be a value to your project. Also I believe Four Stroke Tech used to build these up for xc racing.

@@MichaelSabo I'm trying to find the old build from ATV Connection but I can't find it. I wanna say FST had a 330cc , and like a 383cc kit for them, and also sold a high comp piston kit to .

I think the Suzuki late 80s lt300e chaindrive 5 speed semi auto with full suspension and shares parts with the early lt500r like rear axle and bears front wheel bearings, tie rod etc, would be a great addition to the battle of the mid-range sport quads , it is a sport quad , top speed of 55 to 60mph , and u can’t find them in decent shape for fairly cheap

I have a 96 Lakota with a dog exhaust, but I'll say you won't be able to run that Lakota without a jet kit to the carb. Sprocket and smaller wheels and tires are also great mods to squeze power out of them. Best setup is a 13/41 on sprockets with a 21x7-9 in the front with a 20x11-9 in the rear. Polaris predator/outlaw front wheels and trx400 rear wheels and hubs will give you more/better wheel and tire options. Also instead of the Mojave carb the 400ex carb with a 120 main jet for the dg exhaust and 400ex throttle assembly works much better than a slide style carb like the Mojave and Lakota have. Clutches are known to go out on these I upgraded mine to vesrah clutches and caltric shoes and springs. K&N makes oil and air filters for it as well that's all I run in mine with Lucas oil. Dg also made a skid plate and grab bar for it which I also have on mine but they are very very hard to find. Also the dg exhaust is very raspy and loud I stuck a spark arrestor tip on mine for a grizzly 700 from black path racing it makes a difference for sure. Parking brakes are known to go bad on these as well so I'd recommend deleting it as well like I've done, you can get that from black path as well.
