The yellow was a 1985, the 1985-1/2 was black. The 1986 was white/red and had all the upgrades. I’m excited about this series, I’m restoring a 85 now also. Alot of parts from other Yamahas fit these, and I just bought the BVC Trikes front end kit for mine. BVC says you can run CR85 or CRF150R forks with the kit. The CRF150R would be better because you have to drill the CR85 forks to make the axle fit. Also with their kit, the factory headlight brackets won’t work

My father has an '86 Z that is almost showroom mint to this day. An absolute blast to ride, too. The risk of rollover is just about nil if you actually know what you're doing, and the Z has enough power to slide the rear around without much effort. Small correction: The '86 Zs were only white/red, and the '85 came in both black/red and black/yellow. The '85 also had a 5-speed gearbox. I've always wanted to see a Z restored to look like the modern Yamaha line, both in decals and with the blue/white or blue/black color scheme.

I grew up with my dad owning a tri-z and one o the old 200 three wheelers from yamaha. Every spring, my dad would be unable to kick start the old tri-z and get it running just like you were in the video. So for 15 minutes, I'd be on the 200 with a pull strap to the headlight gaurd on the tri z pulling my dad down the street as he would have the tri-z in 2nd gear and just letting it spin until it would fire up.. Once it fired up, it would be good to go all season and would fire up within just a couple kicks. Sketchy as hell pulling it around like this, but it works. Try it out! And keep it factory look if your gonna do it!

I have a red/white 86 Z--I vote for that color scheme. The stock suspension on the 86 Z (not the 85) is actually the best of the 250s. I would just rebuild the front and rear first and see how you like it. You might try Race Tech's cartridge emulators for the front forks. Regarding the engine, Klemm still makes a 350 big bore for the Z. You can get that for less than the inverted fork conversion.

Hi there Michael. Some info on YTZ-250's. You most likely have an 85 1/2 year model (don't quote me on this). The 86's are white/red. This is how you check: if you have these, you have an 85: 12" front rim (86 has an 11" rim) 37mm front forks (86 has 39mm forks). 8" rear wheels (86 has 9" rears) These are a given. Also, the Banshee and Blaster use TRI-Z parts, meaning you can use on your TRI-Z, like a Banshee front and rear brake M/C. Blaster thumb throttle. I still have some rare TRI-Z parts. Now that you're doing this, I'm sure the Z experts will chime in. Listen to them and not the rest of the "know it alls". Like all old or vintage machines, these have their own tricks and details. Hit me up if I can help some more. I'm pretty sure that if I have made a mistake on my description above, it'll be corrected. Go at it. Were all watching.
@vintagetrikesandquads4012 Жыл бұрын
Excited to see you finally decided to restore a classic 80s 250--I've got lots of them. I restore them too, just not on video. Just be aware when you take off the clutch side cover, there is a bolt hidden under the small cover for the kick shaft. You have to take off the small cover first, undo the bolt, and then you can remove the clutch cover. Don't forget to install it back. Z clutch covers are known to crack without that support and they are getting hard to find.

@christopheravery5808 Жыл бұрын
Just a tip, run those 18” tires in dry conditions, run 20” tires if you’re riding in the mud. It will be more stable with the lower profile tires. Sliding the rear end, basically steering with the rear, is how you ride a trike fast. With that said, brand new tires are actually a disadvantage most of the time. Rear tires that are between 50% and 80” life work the best. I usually put new tires in my quads when I need tires for a trike. BVC will be your best friend with the build. There are still parts out there for them, and there is a cult like following for every model of trike, so you CAN find what you need if you know where to look.
@christopheravery5808 Жыл бұрын
Oh, and I forgot to mention. The 85 came in yellow/black, 85 1/2 came in black, 86 came in white if I remember right. So I believe they are both 85’s if I’m not mistaken, but I could be wrong.

Seeing you kick the Tri Z over....and over...and over gave me flashbacks of being 14-15 and having a 85.5 Tri Z with fuel issues. I narrowed it down to the diaphram in the compression drive (vacuum?) fuel pump. I will say that the Tri Z taught me more about mechanics than anything I've ever worked on, however I'm not sure that's a good thing when you'd rather be riding instead of wrenching. I'd go for a 250R Honda ATC, more reliable. The fuel tank under the seat on the Tri Z caused more problems than it was worth IMO. Great video!

Instead of the red, white & blue mine is now red & white with a mix of '85, '86 & '87 graphics.

Mike, Yamaha actually came out with the black Tri Z in mid 1985 and called it a 1985 and a half.....then came out with the white and red one for 1986. I restored one in 2015 and sold it for far less than I got for my mint 1986 250R. Nobody wanted it, but I'm sure things have changed price wise across the board. I do know that I hated that Tri Z because the front end was so light and handled for crap.....I put a Kenda Bear Claw on the front for some dig...

She looks good. Definitely something to work with. It is an 85.5. The 86 was red and white with 6 speed transmission. The are basically unicorns now. The suspension is a weak spot on these old gals, also the foot pegs usually need attention. If you do the invert kit on the front, have your triples custom built with some tabs to mount the headlight. Otherwise, you will have to build a bracket, or forgo the headlights for a number plate. Good luck and enjoy!

Funny enough BVC Racing used to be a local company here in my area. Their original building was about a 30 minute drive from my house. I bought my Fly Racing helmet from them a few years ago when I still wasn't working full time. They started off making custom race quads for customers and then went into making three-wheeler conversion kits for turning modern dirt bikes into modern day three-wheelers. Of course when they went full swing with making the kits they were at a different building by then so I never knew where they moved to. Sadly by the time I rediscovered them I was just being hired on full time at where I'm working now and all of the Covid bs and lock downs were starting to ramp up. Since their biggest customer base for trike kits as well as custom made trikes were coming from Arizona that's where they ended up moving to. Which made me kind of sad really because this area doesn't really have any industry like what they were doing. I was actually hoping to see if they'd do a custom trike out of my YZ 465 but sadly Covid stopped that quick. They pretty much packed up all of their CNC equipment and got the hell out of Dodge but quick. They have a channel here on YT. I haven't seen any of their recent builds lately but their last build that I saw them do was converting a CRF 450R into a trike and then they modified the engine cradle of the frame to hold a CR 500R engine. Which they installed an electric start kit onto so they didn't have to fiddle with kick starting it. Of course I haven't seen the build in a while so I could be wrong with which bike they used. If I had the money for such parts I'd go for their kits first before anyone else's. They've actually thought out how to make a bike into a trike properly without making it look like they just slapped a swing arm and a couple tires on the back like I've seen with other builds. :)

This is gonna be a cool build... If you can find a tire for the 12" front wheel keep that size and original forks.. That always made the tri z look bad ass... If you put a 10 on it with the inverted forks it could really change the look of the front end... I always thought the tecate front end looked a little boxy with the 11x10 wheel and the tri z with the 25x12x8 tire keeps the stance looking tough... I got to the end of the property and the back tires were bald. I slid through a ditch and into the side of a jeep Cherokee. That hurt... when I woke up. Michael, I would try to get a tire for the stock size front rim. The more tire sidewall you have, the more bounce you are going to have in the front end. You want to try and keep that front tire in contact with the ground as much as possible. The only three wheelers I thought were dangerous were the ones with crap suspension and balloon tires. Those things would start bouncing around and get out of control if you were going fast at all. The ones like the Tri Z with better suspension and lower profile tires were much better. I have had a few three wheelers over the years. I would love to own one again one day. I still regret selling my Honda 350x. These are so rare, it deserves the stock look.

Very excited about this build, love a good Honda 250r but these are so under rated, it’s cool to see this being done Instead. Anyways, lack of compression plus that backfire, I’m gomma venture to say it’s worth checking the reeds, I know it’s completely coming apart but if the reeds are blown out it won’t pull fuel. Blew up one of my race outboards when one cyls reeds broke and leaned out, also doesn’t make good comp without it

You may very well be correct; we will find out in the next video!

I used KTX plastics on my 86 Honda trx70 and loved the quality and finish. Plus they actually protect the plastics during shipping

Heck yeah def go with the red and white. Graphics on the white fenders would be sick! Love the gold wheels also.

The characters that you come up with and act out are hilarious!! The one from a few years back that took place in the research garage talking about the Klemm Research silencer with the student pretending to be texting was great!!

2 of my machines are Honda 3 wheelers. I can appreciate this build. Learned how to ride my first time on an 86 Honda big red.

I live in norfolk and went into power sports Nation many times for my quads I've seen that black one sitting there everytime and always thought it would be nuts to see it run. I'm so happy I get to see that now!

Super stoked that you’re doing a three wheeler. I have a 85 ytm200, it’s just a river runner but people don’t know how fun they really are.

I like the red and white scheme. There's so few of these trikes around, it'd be cool to have one as close to factory as is feasible. With a few necessary mods to make it more fun to ride.

I'm not restoring my 85 but building it and replacing what is needed I also have the red and black tri z 💯 so much fun man what a beast. Mine also came with the twist throttle which I absolutely love. The 85 came with black and red plastic and silver rims says 85 on the label on my neck stem

One big upgrade Yamaha changed for 86 was a larger diameter fork they have black caps on top like the 250r That being said the best mod is new springs from progressive they work very well
