This tutorial is outstanding and I really appreciate Michael's approach. I am an advanced beginner who understands basic photography but the R5 I just purchased is my first full-frame. This video was perfect for introducing me to all of the advanced features of this incredible camera and letting me know all of the areas where I need to learn more. I feel much more confident shooting with it now and I took pages of notes on features I want to explore in greater detail. I especially liked the section that walked thru the deep menus. Thanks to Michael for acknowledging that not all R5 owners are Pros...yet :) I look forward to using more of his videos on my journey.

This video is amazing and by far, the most comprehensive that I have watched. I appreciate you for taking the time. The irony of it all is that I am in fact, a novice and have opted to purchase an R5 to learn on. My logic behind doing this is I expect to use this camera for years to come. I do not want to keep buying a new camera every single time that I have a need for functionality that isn’t available on entry level cameras. The learning curve will be great, but to me it was a worthwhile investment. Again, thank you so much for making this tutorial.

Michael, With the R5 being a new camera that is still being released in small amounts (I ordered on the release date and received it in October) I was surprised to fund such a detailed course. I wish to express my gratitude for this video. I found it to be extremely detailed and very helpful. I have found myself going back and reviewing different parts of the session more than a few times. Thanks again!

I just purchased my R5 and I have been reviewing many online tutorials. Michael, your tutorial is by far the BEST one I have found. By videoing the back of the camera (instead of capturing the HDMI output), I can really see which buttons you are pushing etc. Your detailed index to your KZbin video makes it very easy to find specific topics. Thank you so much for creating and publishing this video!

I pretty well know my way around the Canon menu but as a user of the 1DX I found the transition to the R5 very much easier after watching your video. You are a natural teacher, and I'm so impressed with what you have achieved here. Walking me through each of the menu options was far easier than ploughing my way through the 900 page manual. So I'm up and running with the new camera a lot faster than expected. Keep up the good work; this is by far the best training video I've seen in a long time. Not a problem to watch stuff I already know about exposure and aperture priority - you explain it so well It was a pleasure to watch. Ten out of ten for you.... and very many thanks.

It's worth mentioning that picture style also affects the preview of a RAW capture. At least, it used to on older cameras. I like to set the picture style to a super neutral setting with low contrast so I get a better idea if I've nailed the RAW capture or not, or if it's something I'm going to be able to save in post or not. That said, this video is fantastic. Thank you for it.

Good stuff. One thing about auto lighting optimizer is that when shooting RAW with turned on and editing with Canon DPP, the software will try to auto tune the exposure values. It’s not exclusive to jpegs. The same type of things when you turn on noise reduction or lens correction in the camera menu and using DPP with RAW images.

OMG thank you so much for doing this. I retired in December and now (like everyone else in the UK) I am in lockdown. So I thought I would FINALY invest some time to learn how to use my 5D MK IV properly and then I thought, if i am going to invest time, why don’t I do it with a new camera? So you are to thank for my new R5 and having now invested the 3 hours, teaching me, not only how to set up my new camera, but teaching me things about photography that I never knew before. So thank you once again. I just need to go and practice and then come back and do your crash course. Take care and stay safe!

When you compared low ISO to high ISO at 56:40 you were actually comparing fast shutter speed to slow shutter speed. The graininess that you were seeing in your image was a result of collecting less light due to a faster shutter speed, not the higher ISO. You can prove this by taking those same two pictures at the same shutter speed with high and low ISO and then exposure matching them in post. The image taken with the higher ISO will have less grain. The grain is noise and is caused by not collecting enough light.

I just started watching your video. It seems well done. I hope to have some positive reviews for you. As a technical note, when you do your conversion from bits to bytes, don't use 8. Use 10. Yes, there are 8 bits to a byte. But there are also 1 start bit and 1 stop bit, resulting in 10 total bits per byte.

Thanks so much for doing this. I am up to the exposure part of the tutorial, about 43:28. I own a Canon EOS 6D, but the R5 is more complicated. I would have appreciated that as you went through the different aspects with the sub menus, etc that you would have said the name of the button(s) that you were using to get to what you were explaining. I was having trouble following. I couldn't quite see how your fingers moved. This was a little too fast for me. I did have my camera out and was trying it out as you spoke in order to get it into my fingers and brain. Yes, I am overwhelmed and know that I will learn by doing, but still it would have helped if you said the name of the button as you pressed or spun the wheel.
@MMaven3 жыл бұрын
The only button that I am touching on top of the camera during the exposure lesson is the rotating wheel that goes from side to side you should still be able to see my finger on it in the video I was very careful to make sure it was still in the frame
