This was the greatest marketing ever. I was a kid in the 1990's and knew very little about cars, but had seen a quick take of couple minutes of this in the news... and remembered it forever- that the Discovery was the greatest off road vehicle and one must buy a Land Rover. I would honestly buy a Camel Trophy built Land Rover at the dealer, new, exactly as shown on the Camel Trophy.

They are essentially stock vehicles. They have some safety and utility upgrades but no real major performance upgrades. They received winches, Safety Devices Roll cages, some under carriage and axle protection, snorkels, lighting and communications/storage/rack add-ons. Other than very good off road focused rolling stock they are effectively mechanically stock.

There is a saying in Chinese, walking ten thousand miles is much better than reading ten thousand books. Of course reading is important, but getting out there and experience it yourself is what will stay with you. People talk down on you because deep down they are jealous that they couldn't do the same as you. Don't let the naysayers influence you! This will be your journey of life, be safe and be smart. I am sure what you learn from this journey will worth much more than what you may learn in university.

Lifting your trucks in order to fit large tires won't help you here. Even the stock Land Rovers with their low center of gravity rolled over in some situations so your lifted trucks will lay on their roofs half the time :P Also you can't just increase track width to tackle this problem, the tracks are too narrow to do so. Awesome driving but Landrover should have stopped earlier, 1997 and 1998 just aren't as impressive as before.

The stock landrovers rolled because of dangerously narrow wheels and tires along with too much weight on top. It was an example of how not to wheel in those conditions

It's interesting to see the camera / video quality slowly getting better as the years progress, very cool upload! I have a 2002 Disco SE7 and would love to take it on an adventure even a fraction of one of these trophy runs! Cheers all!

must be good to go off road in a car that's not yours and have 30 other vehicles to help you if your stuck. Shame they stopped doing the camel trophy.

Too bad no Hummers allowed, my Hummer h3 with 37ss posi full time front n rear and extra Heavy Duty suspention all around. I would luv to go on any of these adventures. Bring it on USA BUILT TRUCK!!! I will say tho all those Land Rovers did an outstanding journey, Great run Fellas!!! One thing more, The makers of these races and films should show the preperation of the Trucks, such as Waterproofing and sealing Elec. ect. Letting us all see the real work involved!!! It's Great, Stay Safe Always, and Run it Hard n Stay Blessed.....

Yeah despite freelander has a new suspension it is just not match to the older versions of land rover models such as discovery and defender even range rovers ... it has very low clearance and it more like a road jeep I was sad back then when they introduced freeLander they kinda ruined themselves in my eyes. Still wanna get defender 90 :)

The point is, Camel did the first Camel Trophy with Jeeps, but for all the others, they chose Land Rovers. The stock vehicles don't need a suspension lift, nor do they need welded diffs, they're standard factory production-line vehicles, apart from the roll-cage and roof-rack. They have an extra sump guard and fuel tank guard., but the mechanical bits are stock.

love this camel trophy, growing up with these event when in secondary back in 90's can't miss the episode. this the reason why i am owning 4x4 and joining offroad 4x4 club. anyway i can't see any of the vehicle using tyre bigger than 245, yet they all manage to escape all the terrain. is it because of the event setup rule or because it is the best tyre size to be use in this type of activity?

With even larger wheels, the vehicles must be lifted. Which in turn is even more complex and even more susceptible to repairs. The Landrover axles don't last long with original tires...
