This is the first in a series of three lectures in which French philosopher Michel Foucault examines Western culture's conceptual development of individual subjectivity. He gave these lectures, in English, at UC Berkeley, beginning on April 12, 1983, roughly a year before he died. There are some negligable distortions in the tape.

If the format and garbled sections are putting you off, I'd suggest acquiring a copy of the hermeneutics of the subject, where you can find everything this talk includes, in much more detail.

I like how he relates back to Plato and Socrates - it just goes to show how long we have battle with 'the Self', trying discover who we are and what we mean.

Only 11% of those who watched part 1 made it to part 2, 70% of those to part 3, 56% of those to part 4, and then, by some hermeneutically obtuse miracle, 110% of those to part 5. What can it mean!?

Some of the parts that were skipped can be deduced from the transcripts of his lectures at the Collège de France.

Well, however mr scientist. The reason is that someone e.g linked part 5 to his/her friends, and by that added views. You cannot see the views on a particular youtube video as a result causal relations.

Turning captions on is recommended for comedic purposes. His accent confuses the interpreting program creating some hilariously inaccurate phrases.

It's false (at least I subjectively view it so) that the distortions are negligible. After a minute of it in this one, I decided not to continue. I'm not a fan of Foucault though.

By looking at the "views" stats on each part of the video and comparing them. I assume that in the intervening 3 months my figures have now become impertinent. Whether they ever were shall now be a problem for an archaeologist of knowledge.

So basically he's just saying we should be putty in our own hands, that's how I'm interpreting this.

So I hear my comments just now at the 2 minute 22 second mark answering his question what are we. We are like monkeys version 2.0 and we are in a matrix for the purpose of entertaining the makers of The matrix.
