I saw an inspirational quote with a picture of a scale on Instagram that said ….”Please remember: This scale can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That is it. It cannot measure beauty, talent, purpose, possibility, strength, love or character.”

Good for you! And you did it the good, old-fashioned way: exercise, modifying diet. Having a great, knowledgeable trainer really helps, too. Very inspirational. So proud of you! And I so agree with you, I was a hardcore runner for many years. Injuries set me back on so many levels, so I now walk either outside or incline walks on the treadmill. So much better on the joints. Keep up the great work! 😊❤

One thought re: DEXA scan - I’d highly recommend getting one, and maybe not for the reasons we’re usually focused on. I’m 56 and got one last Fall, just a few weeks before I got a breast cancer diagnosis. Since the DEXA also gives you bone density, it’s been hugely helpful to have that baseline as I go into hormone treatment that will compromise my bone density. So knowing where I was last year has been fabulous in that regard. I’m also working on fat loss, and when I can I’ll get back into strength training (I was doing CrossFit, which I give credit to for giving me a bone density of 1.1, which means I have denser bones than many 30-year-olds!). Highly recommend getting baseline data as we go through our menopausal years!

I would not get a DEXA. I would get a REMS scan. You will need to travel. It shows bone density more accurately than DEXA & bone quality. It’s from a company called ECHOLIGHT. My dexas were so different & same machine. You look beautiful!

I am on my own personal health journey as well. Your comments about how a cheat meal can be a meal of fresh pasta or a high-quality burger resonated with me. I've always associated "cheating" with junk food from fast food places, and I think it's because I was raised and conditioned to believe that stuff like McDonald's was a "treat." I need to rewire my brain. Thank you for making me look at this differently.

More power to your transformation journey! Love how you used "transformation" instead of "weight loss". The goal is to be strong and healthy and like you, it took a while for me to find what worked for me. It's different for everyone but finding the right combination of movement, right food, sleep and mental well-being that suits your lifestyle is key. My wish is that we have more access to healthy food in the grocery aisles that is not too prohibitive to us consumers.

Every part of this resonated with me. I'm the same age and have become much more aware of how I want to age. The two biggest things that you said that really woke me up were about about numbers (which has been an obsession in the past) and junkfood not being food! Keep up the great work! You’re about 10 yrs older than me and you function a little bit like an older sister or friend because we’re very similar but you’re so much wiser. This video is just truthful, authentic, and GOOD. Thank you.

I’ve been on the same journey for about 2.5 years. It wasn’t about the number on the scale for me either. It’s about how I felt in my body. I have most of the same medical problems as my father who is now wheelchair bound and very infirm. I didn’t want that to be my destiny too. I’ve worked hard at my job to hopefully saved enough to retire in the future. I want to be healthy enough when that time comes to be able to enjoy it and not end up relying on others to take care of me. Lately, I’ve hit a wall in the weight loss department, but I feel stronger since working with my trainer. I don’t weigh myself, but I know just by the way my clothes feel on my body. I’ve accepted it and will just continue on this journey. Thank you for sharing yours! It’s good to hear that there are others on the same road.

Im 51 as well- and 2 things hit me hard recently after losing alot of weight- 1- My daughter becoming a nurse in a convalescent hospital and hearing her stories of people, actually not that old, that just have no strength at all- 2- I got one of those scans after my weight loss and, seeing how much muscle i DONT have and how it would affect me in 10/20/30 years, was sooo scary! My dr did NOT sugarcoat it and told me to start strength training like, yesterday!! It is just so frustrating to not have known about the importance of actual strength so long ago- i have always struggled with weight, have always tried to do it with diet/exercise, but have never (til recently) even thought i needed strength training (always thought that was for big body builders). So, i have always worked out vs trained as well- and then wondered what was wrong with me. Great job and great video!! 👍🧡👍🧡

I turned 50 in January and have the exact same philosophy on my weight and fitness. I was diagnosed with LADA/T1 diabetes. One thing I have learned is how much impact just simply walking can have on your blood sugar levels. I now have a Peloton treadmill and try to walk or run every day (if not, I am walking one of my three dogs daily). I am working out for my health and fitness for the second half of life. I also do not want to lead a sedentary life as I get older. Any kind of movement is so important.

Well done Michele! I appreciate how candid you've been on your journey. ❤ I really love seeing you succeed and bringing us along the way, it's been really inspiring. Being a teen in the 90s (diet coke, snackwells and the like), I never really realized how food illiterate I was. I started doing Dr. Joe's work a little over two years ago. I've found that when I focused on wholeness in all areas of my life it was wild how things changed. In the area of health... What was once meant with resistance became something I wanted to do, or something that became easy to step into. Working out in the early mornings has become easier and cooking a healthy meal feels more empowering. Thank you for your comments regarding the scale, I'm working through that currently and that's exactly what I needed to hear! 😊

Way to go Michelle! When I stopped eating meat and being more aware of my food intake I remember reading articles about how when you eat healthy or even starting a new change for yourself it takes a good 3 months for it to become a habit. I now crave fruits and veggies. Junk or fast food is nasty for me. Also becoming more knowledgeable about how truly most American food is toxic and eating healthy truly is the best choice for longevity and happiness

Congrats, Michele, on such an achievement. I went from 173 to 145 in 7 months by walking (wearing a 20-pound vest) and strength training. I am also a carnivore, which has changed my life vastly and noticeably. I've never felt better. I just turned 50 this past March and am currently going through perimenopause, but with the help of DR Marie Claire Haver and Chalene Johnson, this time around, I feel I'm living my best healthy life. My only advice is to focus on strength training, and you're good. Great job, mama!!!❤❤❤

Totally agree about big food corporations and how addictive the food is. Young people, including young children in Britain are also suffering so badly from starting life addicted to this stuff through no fault of their own. Rubbish food tends to be cheaper and families are struggling to put food on the table. It’s a terrible health crisis.

This video was everything- Thank You. Being a journey says it all. I have walked all my life, never learned to drive. I am 61 this month and it has served me well. We just cant eat or really exercise the same as we did in our 20's, and I so agree its about mainlining health, strength and mobility, not just about "how much do I weigh" . I broke my foot in 2021, it took me a full year to be at what I considered normal (LOL) and it took work. I still have my challenges, but wanting to be able to walk, get up and move as proper as one can going into one's 70's,80's is a goal. Eating well is always a goal too ( i say this after eating a delish Belgian sugar waffle) but hey, one day at a time LOL Thank you again for letting us be with you on your journey!

Thoughts...I love your -what I call a Self Care Journey. I am 65 ...a bit older than you. But I must say I am totally there and beyond. Just to give you a trajectory...It does get easier and better. I will say you do not need all the scans and tests. Sometimes that turns into another way to market something and in the end promotes anxiety. The thing is...we have the tools for self care and the skill of really knowing our body. Of course there is medical intervention but the more powerful destination is that it is OUR Body to have and have control of. That is my freedom to great health. And to know that it will never be perfect as we ebb and flow with the ups and downs of life but...big BUT...we have what you said and stressed with immense importance the discipline and consistency to lean on. Our very own unique beautiful personal responsible joyful gratitude full personal journey of SELF CARE. Bring on our 80's!

Thanks for sharing your experience about getting more fit and losing weight as a result. I just got back from Vegas (saw the Prada store you frequent) and I was shocked by the abundance of buffet restaurants in the US. In Canada, we don't have unlimited eating places and it would be nice if we had some. Anyway, I think the overinflating and encouraging consumption and hyper-productivity of the US is something I admire but it is not good when it goes the other way (ie overeating, burning out). I have under-productivity issue. I don't eat for a long time and then very little of anything I want. My body started to gain weight this way because it is trying to store calories in starvation mode. at the same time losing muscles in my mid 40s. I will try your frequent healthy meals and step up the workout days with more weight training to get my body to a healthier place. thanks so much for sharing.

Wow. I loved this video Michele. I turned 50 this year and I have the same why as you. My dad is 80 and has lost a lot of his mobility because of Parkinson’s and my mother has early dementia. After the last year of freshly dealing with this I want to be as healthy as possible, as strong as possible and keep my mind fresh. So I joined a fitness program where the woman who is a trained personal trainer and nutritionist, the stuff she teaches is exactly what you spoke about in this video, consistency, calories, water and sleep. With heavy focus on mindset. I’m in my 10th week of the program and I’m doing really well, but I really hope I’m in the same place you are now this time next year. Because it means I’ve changed my relationship with food and fitness and I’ve started something that I can do for the rest of my life. You are doing fantastic. 🙌🏻 oh and check out the podcast Sleep and Weight Gain by The Matt Walker Podcast. It’s two short episodes and explains why sleep or lack of leads to weight gain. It would be great to get updates from you in the future because you explain stuff so well and as you say you’re a normal person, just like us 😊

I’m also on a similar journey as you and lost 30 lbs so far. I couldn’t agree enough about seeing it as a life long journey, not just a number lessened on the scale. It completely changes how I view food and exercises ever since. But to be honest, as women, like you said, we grow up seeing scale as the ultimate goal and there are times I did struggle with that. What helps me go pass it is Jordan Syatt’s and Eric Roberts’ content (and also many more including yours) - especially the ones where they talk about scale. Also, telling myself to trust the process! Thank you for sharing your journey with us! I still remember the word that you said “every meal is not about celebration” and it will forever ingrain in my brain! Let’s get strong together 💪🏻

I have noticed that once my habits change around eating in a sustainable way, I really change the way I choose food on days where all bets are off, like on vacation. I find when I’m healthy, I can eat “bad foods” but my choice and amounts are different because my body responds differently (and I think naturally). Over eating or under eating doesn’t work or respond the same when healthy, and my tastes have developed or changed - like now being able to taste the difference between a homemade/quality brownie vs a box brownie. Tastes buds change. I found when I do things sustainably, my tastes buds and stomach adapt and make healthy choices or homemade/high quality junk food choices 😅 much different and sustainable than in the past.

I think you are absolutely right about ultra-processed foods and fastfood being engineered (and that is the word for it) to be addictive. They manipulate food's "crave-ability" which is industry-speak for making it addictive! There is a reason why you cannot eat just one Oreo cookie--you try to eat one or two, and you end up inhaling the whole row! We've all been there. I consider morbidly obese people to be food addicts, and I have empathy for that, in the way I have empathy for other kinds of addiction (drinking, smoking, shopping, drugs, gambling...).

Hi Michelle, thank you for sharing your journey and what has helped you. When I first started to follow you I remembered you said that about 'training' rather than 'working out' . That also really made a lot of sense to me. I also really dislike being dictated by a number. There's a machine out there that every one likes to use in my family where it told the person what age their body was. I just could not get on board. I know getting onto that scale could tip my mental health backwards. Well done Michelle, keep up the good work!! Keep going.

I am now post-menopause and shudder to think of how much muscle I have lost (in the name of weight loss) and what it did to my metabolism over the years. Great video! What resonated with me: wondering why the weight doesn’t change but meanwhile the body composition is changing, and when you said that certain foods are made to be addictive and not nourishing/satisfying. Absolutely agree with the desire to be strong and live a full life and ready for anything! Also, getting a dexascan would align with your overall health/wellness goal; it will tell you how your bones are doing which could inform a possible decision on HRT if you’re interested in that.

I’ve been in a similar journey in the same time span. Working with a trainer is so helpful. I also do strength training and some of it daily. I’m way older than you ( could be your mom!) so it was really hard plus I had my thyroid removed and have a spinal fusion. But we keep pushing and do something daily. You look terrific and I congratulate you! I think you maybe don’t see yourself like we do since you wear oversized clothes that hide all your hard work, IMHO.

Well done Michele. Your efforts are inspiring. You should look up Chris Van Tulleken if you haven’t already. He has written a book about ultra processed foods and has done some interesting podcasts I think you would like. He talks a lot about what you’ve mentioned regarding the food industry. Some of it is frightening stuff!

Just wanted to say something about intermittent fasting. I think people hear this term and believe it means you are going hours and hours without eating but essentially, you may be doing it already - just while you’re sleeping. If you’re eating dinner at six, then not eating until the next morning, you’re probably doing some fasting! The biggest takeaway for me when I practice IF is staying away from mindless eating and snacking at night. I typically try to eat a healthy protein filled dinner by six, then get up and have coffee /light breakfast the next morning around 8-9. As a result, I’ve completed a 14-15 hour fast, sometimes I’ll extend it by an hour. I swear it makes a difference - and the bulk of my “fasting” was done when I was sleeping and simmering down for bed when I shouldn’t be eating anyway. I do hear of people going 24+ hours without eating and I don’t know, I find I (like Michele) end up making poor choices when I try that as I start starving. I think a 14-16 hour fast is a good goal.

Michellle, I’m so glad I saw this. I just started this journey and I’m going through all that you just said. It is so so hard. I want to sit and watch Netflix tooo! I’ve undertaken this journey because my knees are giving away. I’m 47 and I don’t want to be bound to a wheelchair after 15 years. Your video brings out such a resounding emotion. So grateful that you talked about your struggles and went into detail about diet and the correlation of diet and exercise and how that’s an eye opener for you. I’m realising that’s my story too. Thank you thank you thank you ❤

Great video! I totally agree with everything you said. I’m almost 56, and I want to be strong and healthy for my grandkids, and I don’t want to be a burden for my kids. I lift heavy weights 5 days a week and walk at least an hour a day and use my mini tramp and Peleton for cardio. I used to run, but can’t anymore. I lost 30 pds 6 years ago and have kept it off. I track my food everyday. You are doing great!

Oooooh I’ve been waiting for this update as I’ve been following your journey this past year. So much of this resonates with me, especially the consistency aspect. I’ve been on a similar fitness/strength journey since January. Watching my mom age has been a great motivator (let’s be honest-more like a flashing warning 😂). My goals to my trainer at the time were simply being able to do everything I wanted to be able to do for the rest of my life. He asked me recently why I feel like this time is different from the one other time I tried a trainer (almost 20 years ago) and the honest answer is that it’s him/this gym. I found my people and the things that really work for me. I’ve felt the shift in my mental and physical game so much in the past couple of months and I’m so proud of me. There are a million other things you said in this and through the past year on this journey that have been so dead-on to my experience. It’s been awesome to see someone my age(ish as I’m a couple of years older) experiencing the same things. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Bravo Michele!! I so admire you! I developed an inoperable cyst between my c6-c7 vertebrae in my neck. Could have come from bad car accident I was in. The neurologists said I could not exercise because they were afraid it would move and start to press on my spinal cord or cause other issues, They said I could only walk. So I ceased everything but walking and it took a toll on my balance, my flexibility, etc. Well, slowly I started to realize that perhaps as long as I did not use my neck muscles I would be OK so I do modified Pilates 4 times a week now with a well-trained private instructor, along with walking and I feel so much better. The lesson learned was take every bit of advice, even from doctors with a grain of salt. Listen to your instincts.

Well done, MIchele! This video is very inspiring to me as I’m about 7 months into my own journey and fight the daily battle of the scale. Stress is also a major factor for me and I am luckily at a point where I can minimize it vs. my previously crazy career. One minor suggestion in case it proves useful: I have a 26 year-old treadmill 😂 that I used to run on when I lived back East and now walk on while watching Netflix living in often rainy Seattle. Possibly a good way to combine activities if you’d consider purchasing new and probably very technically cool treadmill? Best of luck on your lifelong journey! ❤
