The most if not the only useful video on the topic out there. It shows what to do with the retention ring if the hubcap is too loose or in my case does not fit the wheel. Forcing the cap was not helpful but tightening the ring decreased the diameter and afterwards it fitted nicely.

I have no idea what was going on there, but it passed the time for a couple of minutes. I wouldn't go to the effort of a trip to the cinema though. Not enough action and I've never seen the actor before.
