Harvey was very notorious for his aggressive campaigning strategies, but other studio excutives did and still do it in more low-key and subtle ways these days. They can make actors and actresses more appealing during the consideration period to become nominees (e.g. Campaigns for Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah for *Chicago* did eclipse Michelle Pfeiffer's opportunity to get Best Supporting Actress nod.), but winning is another thing. However, I do understand what you mean; like Fernanda and Cate should have won OSCAR over you-know-who back in the late 90s. (She got that part by backstabbing her then-bff, Winona Ryder.) Of course, Harvey was one of the reasons; however, in this particular case, I think Gwyneth won largely because of being Hollywood's royalty - her parents, and her godfather (Steven Spielberg).
