Hahaha I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Tool. I was 7, on the way to my aunts house, and Schism came on the radio. I remember asking my older sister what instrument they were playing and that day I learned about bass guitar. I didn't listen to Tool for another 6 or so years then they became my favorite band. Listen to Tool with a good set of headphones. The engineering of the their songs is incredible. Once you fully appreciate their music (poly-rhythms, deep lyrics, engineering, etc) you will see how magical it is. Sammy Hagar said that these are the four best musicians at their craft (bass, drums, guitar, vocals) who all just happen to be in the same band.

Seen a lot of these "reactions" to Tool, and primarily The Pot, this guy is ACTUALLY listening and trying to absorb it on the first go. not stopping it ever 25 seconds to get excited about what one of the lyrics were... actually processing the music. With Tool, no Single band member is closer to the front of the stage. They are closer to an orchestral arrangement than a "band". each of the 4 members stand on their own merits, without one, the band fails. This is the entrance to the rabbit hole.

"The Pot" is probably the perfect introductory choice for you because it showcases a little bit of everything that makes Tool the unique band they are. It also is one of Maynard's better vocal performances, but bear in mind that he is an extremely versatile singer and he can sound completely different from track to track. In many of their songs, his vocals are difficult to hear because he typically prefers his voice to be treated as just one of the instruments in the mix rather than front and center like with most bands. I would encourage you to continue on this Tool journey. They can be an acquired taste with their unique polyrhythmic style, but I can assure you that most of their songs will grow on you with each listen. They have so many great songs that it's hard to choose one for a follow-up, but I think I would suggest "Right in Two" which was on the same album (10,000 Days). Anyway, it's refreshing to see a reactor be so candid with their feelings about a song. If you like it, you like it and if you don't, you don't. And there's nothing wrong with that. Rock on!

Tool beats and rhythms often have multiple things going on at once. Looking at the audience at Tool shows, you can often see 2, 3, 4 head banging patterns at the same time, depending on which bit instrument (or limb, in the drummer's case) the individual is grooving to. I'll be real with you, Tool has some songs that can put new listeners off. Harsh guitars and a bunch of weird shit that's best left until you're sure you like the band. This was a good one to ease yourself in. Aenima, Vicarious, Sober, Right In Two, Schism, and Stinkfist are other good ones to start with. I'd avoid their music videos too, you have to do like dmt or acid or some shit or else they're just distracting and weird.

@@jbirkins Yeah... saying "plain old 4/4" is a bit simplistic. The fact it's 4/4 under all the complexity speaks to their musical genius. There are many other bands that use complex timings, but rarely do they hit the mark in terms of complexity and great song writing quite like Tool. Rush are another, but despite all the great musicians we have I'm struggling to think of another in the same top bracket. Maybe Led Zepp? But even they are a bit "porn" in comparison.

Danny Carey is one of my favorite drummers, even over Brad Wilk. His use of polyrhythms are insane, especially with his feet! OMG! He loves using odd time signatures and his technique is just unique! One of my personal favorite things is seeing people react to hearing Tool for the first time. They truly are one of the most unique bands out there and there’s so much sound in their music. Worth a subscription, real as hell. Like a lot of people say to new listeners some Tool songs can be off putting, Vicarious is a great one to check out if you're newer to Tool. Always try to check a lyrics video whenever possible as their official videos are pretty distracting. But as always just do you and keep it going!

They play with timing a ton. The 4/4 and 3/4 timing that exists in almost all popular music for the last century, is only one way of doing things. Jazz has a lot more examples of playing with timing. For sure some tool songs you’ll come across will have multiple timings going together which creates this uncomfortable comfort that coalesces into magic

_"The Pot"_ does refer to weed (you must have been high/ganja) but it also refers to the saying _"that's the pot calling the kettle black"._ So he's talking about someone who is judging him of something of which they themselves are guilty. He's criticising them for it, much like the saying "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" (which he also alludes to with the _"soapbox house of cards and glass"_ line; another brilliant line tying in 3 different but related themes in just 6 words). When you see lines like _"weeping shades of chosen indigo"_ and _"got lemon juice up in your eye"_ he's referring to crocodile tears (i.e., put lemon juice in your eyes to make them water; and choosing to weep shades of indigo like a woman's running mascara - so assuming the status of victimhood basically). Similarly _"liar, lawyer, mirror for ya, what's the difference?"_ again points out the hypocrisy in a fairly obvious manner, but also ties it to the legal process, where we see not only judgement but also the potential for wordplay and sophistry to corrupt the truth. I mean, the difference between liars and lawyers is probably that not all liars are lawyers, but all lawyers are liars. So if it's a "mirror for ya" then he's talking to someone who is playing the role of a lawyer at least; an accuser hiding behind words. You need only hold up a mirror to such a person to show them a liar. _"Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent"_ is a good line. It refers to a Kangaroo court, which is an _ad hoc_ trial that has the semblance of due process but really has a predetermined outcome. So not only is Maynard criticising the process by which the subject of the song is coming to his conclusions, and calling him a hypocrite, he's also saying that he himself (the author of the song) is innocent of the accused crime and that if he _were_ guilty of it then it would also condemn those who would stand in judgement (the juror) as it applies equally to any putative member of the community in good standing who would be called upon to judge their peers. Not bad for 8 words. The whole song continues along the same vein, with lyrics such as _"eyeball deep in muddy water"._ This has powerfully suggestive imagery that again plays on an old saying "neck deep in water"; which describes a precarious position to be in. This takes it even further, being eyeballs deep, which means you're so deep you can't even breathe, but also has a connotation of being involved in and engrossed by the subject. But that subject is not just water, it's muddy water. To "muddy the waters" is to make something murky and unclear. So being eyeball deep in muddy water is really very suggestive of being deeply involved in a dirty undertaking which you might just be unable to handle. _"Foot in mouth and head up asshole, difficult to dance round this one till you pull it out"_ is an extremely evocative line. The term "foot in mouth" refers to the saying "every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot in it", which refers to someone making a _faux pas_ (that's French for "false pass") whenever they speak (like asking after the health of someone's wife when you're at her funeral, for example). Of course, if someone has their head up their arse it means that they're willfully ignorant and/or wrong about something, but also very strident in their myopic outlook. So we're talking about someone who is ignorant, wrong, outspoken, and says socially awkward things every time he opens his mouth. The _"dance round"_ part refers verbal dancing, or talking your way out of things. And just as it would be incredibly difficult to physically dance around something with your foot in your mouth and your head up your arse, it is metaphorically difficult for this hypocrite to talk his way out of this situation too. The connection between dancing and speaking while metaphorical is reinforced by the foot being in the mouth. You can neither dance nor speak with your foot in your mouth. The difficulties increase exponentially with your head up your arse too. You'd be more contorted than a pretzel. So it really would be difficult to dance around until you pull it out. But pull what out? Your foot from your mouth or your head from your arse? The answer is "yes". This song has powerful and evocative imagery which when coupled with the disdain in Maynard's voice and the way he says _"you must have been high"_ really conveys the utter contempt he has for this person in a manner that you can just feel. Yet, at the same time, there is a very definite intelligence and artistry with which he has crafted his attacks on the target of his ire. A wholly satisfying song to sing along to.
