When i am hearing the first couple of notes of this track i am immediately catapulted back in time to the year 2000. Playing Unreal Tournament CTF with my friends on Facing Worlds at small, improvised LAN parties in someone's basement, bed room or even community hall. This was the pre flat-screen era. So we had to carry these humongous CRTs up and down stairs. It was tedious but well worth it.

what were you playing on if it wasn't a CD?
@inquireorhack Жыл бұрын
@@whogaze Of course it may have been purchased on CD-ROM, what they mean is that the music format wasn't CD Audio on the same disc. Some CD-ROM games at the time encoded their soundtrack as audio CD tracks on the game disc, so you would have the disc inserted and spinning to hear music in-game. I remember Warcraft 2 and Age of Kings being like that. One could stick the game disc in a regular stereo CD player and hear the soundtrack. Games with tracker music (such as UT) represented a different approach, where the game data would include the samples and sequences needed to reproduce the composition.

I played facing worlds so many times with this in the background. When I started exploring music more I explored Aphex, Squarepusher but also some throwbacks to Bukem and other drum&bass artists. Anyway, I always listened to HipHop so the Amen break always sounded familiar. Hell, it even (still) gets used in commercials nowadays. But for me this is the quintessential drum and bass track just because I spent so much time fragging AIs with a sniper on facing. Dude is probably Dutch too, never knew that.

The neat thing about tracker music is that, since you only really need the sample data and the sequence data, a whole album's worth of music can fit into only a few megabytes, as long as they use the same set of samples. Most lossless audio formats, such as CD-quality audio, take up way more space since they store the raw sample data for the whole song in a single chunk. Of course nowadays this size advantage doesn't matter, even MicroSD cards can typically come in 128 gigabyte sizes for less than 50 dollars.
@Zack_Wester6 ай бұрын
true but tracker music and other none MP3. .OGG music track can be edit mid play. Like you can have a track playing that change depending on whats happening. Player goes under 50% HP the drums stops or they change pattern. maybe a secondary instrument changes depending on who is your co pilot. or okey this can be done whit MP3 the speed change when the boss drops bellove 30% or active some ability. maybe the drum beat skips a beat when ever you get hit by something.

New farts too apparently. I discovered tracker music and the demoscene sometime around 2013 or so (I'd heard Unreal tracks before but didn't know about tracker modules back then), largely forgot about it, then got into listening to some tracks around 2018 or 2019 when I saw an opportunity to cover it in a small project in music class. It's rather fascinating to me, it achieves really good file sizes for the quality you can get out of them, and tracker software paved the way for modern DAWs. I'm simultaneously a little sad that it's relegated to the past and niche communities nowadays and nobody really knows about such a wonderful thing, but at the same time, it has sort of remained as a timeless relic, largely untainted by the path that the music industry took.

@@Senzorei I'm also more in that camp of tracker modules being something that I've experimented with more as I've gotten older. But little did I know that the tracker sound has always been familiar to me via the games I played.
