Michigan Class Teaches Ballroom Dancing to People in Wheelchairs

A ballroom dance class solely for those in wheelchairs is held once a month at the Fred Astaire Studio in Michigan. Recently, professional ballroom dance instructors from across the country taught the basics of the dancing styles, wheelchair techniques and judging criteria. Janice Pegg, a participant diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her 30s, said the class has helped move her out of her comfort zone. Being in a wheelchair for the last 12yrs hasn't stopped me from using my upper body from dancing . I live to dance. I took ballet tap & jazz when I was little At 34yrs old I was severely injured from a tornado because I laid on top of 2 small boys to shield them from the flying debris. I have never regretted my decision.

I also realize the power of this "inclusive" ballroom thing. It is even used now "dancesportingly"! Not just socially Yea! I imagine, for instance, me as an able-bodied dancer, in the waltz, doing a standing spin to the R around a person in a wheelchair using 2-handed open position, with the wheelchair partner spinning in place in the chair. Or in Latin, like in Rumba, I do the Crossover Breaks as usual, but with the wheelchair partner rotating L or R as needed in the natural opposite, but using the hands as usual as if it was an able-bodied partner doing that. Or take the polka. Yes, it is possible. For instance, I am on the L side of the wheelchair, and I take the wheelchair partner's L hand, I do the usual progressive chasses down the floor with the partner just moving the wheelchair down as well in parallel. Then I push the wheelchair to the R with the help of the L arm lead into the butterfly to open position, and then I lead the wheelchair towards me to go back to original position--think "samba locks" in samba in regular ballroom here (a sort of "modified semi-open position"). And then we repeat. Even with the wheelchair partner not doing foot chasses, this still works. :) :) That is a bit of the world of "wheelchair ballroom dance."
