I notice they form a fleur de lis in the beginning. A nod to DCI's Madison Scouts perhaps for whom Malaguena is a signature song?

Michigan does do a pretty good job with this song. Its a tough piece, not easily played. Props to them. It doesn't send the shivers down my spine like say the 1996 Madison Scouts show. If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend it. Anyways, great job Michigan, keep it up.

As someone who has marched college band for 4 years, I have to disagree with that. Just cause we don't compete, doesn't mean we don't take pride in our performance and visual execution of the show. If they're not in step, that is a trait of MICHIGAN, not all college bands.

@samrshelley Ohio State played 4 home games in a row. 4 different shows. Also Ohio State plays performances during away games. The away game is the first time they play the show, then they repeat that show for the home game. So even in the instances of away games, they still play a new show 1 week after performing their last show (unless there's a bye week)

I forgot to write that my favorite version of Malaguena is by the '81 Scouts. Also, I agree that it isn't high enough. The soloists were adequate, but not so fun. I suspect this was due to the tradition of Michigan being relatively conservative in their approach. Loud? Yes. Flashy? Not so much.
@rreemmzzrruullee16 жыл бұрын
that was the best maleguena ever performed.

All these comments about who does it best crack me up. Madison Scouts 63',65',78',80',81',88' (DCI CHAMPS),96', as well as the Alumni Corps in 06' did it the best.

It looks like they were using matched earlier in the song, but when it shows the snareline at about 2:35, it looks like they've switched to traditional grip. Not sure what's up with the matched grip. MMB usually plays trad.

Yes, the responses to my comments...that corp style marching is a "lesser" marching is absolutely telling. Youth today take the easier path, they don't know how to "perfect" something. The "easier" corp style marching is proof. Less to think about, less exertion, less effort, less mastery. POWER comes not ONLY from the music, but the presentation. It was a copout when it was accepted as a standard. Easier to teach, easier to perform. But MUCH less effective and affective!

2003 Cadets never really played Malaguena, they played bits and pieces of it with drum breaks inbetween. The Blast version is more like what Stan Kenton and his orchestra played.

The fleur de lis in the beginning is a nice nod to the Scouts, but I'd bet only 10 of the 90,000 people in the stadium got the reference haha. Still, MMB always puts on a good show. I hope we play Malaguena during halftime with the Blue Band before I graduate.

Okay, dude, I said this above, but I'm in the U of M band, and we learn a new show for EVERY GAME. That's a new show EVERY WEEK and we spend that much time to sound this good...drill comes secondary and we can't make it complicated because we want it to be CLEAN. I don't mean offense, and my high school did more radical stuff than seen here too, but don't rag if you don't know.
@GraysonBuzz17 жыл бұрын
Nice show for sure. But if you want to see the best college band, you need to check out Jacksonville State from Alabama. I saw them do Malaguena at a competition when I was in high school back in 1989...stunning. Only the Scouts themselves have done it better from the shows I have seen.
@procircuit84414 жыл бұрын
@mashdoctor It was a Fleur De Lis which is the symbol of the Madison Scouts.

Yeah, you're definitely right, about what you said and that saxs can sometimes outplay brass, especially tenor sax. That thing is loud. There are things that brass players will never do that woodwinds can, so there's nothing to brag about on either side. We should all just enjoy improving at whatever instrument we like. Brass instruments are loud, that's great but volume isn't everything.

I'm still sticking to my favorite arrangement of Malaguena - the Poway High School Emerald Brigade's version from their 1982-1983 season. It completely rocked, and they took home a TON of trophies that year.
@rezzinator111016 жыл бұрын
Drumline charts are always easier... it's much more important for the drumline to keep PERFECT rhythm.. after all, they are rhythm section! But I've always kept the drumline central to charts to make sure they focus more on playing in sync than elaborate marching patterns.
