Great tour. I stayed at an AirBnb on Lake Huron in St. Ignace when I did a circle tour around IL->IN->MI->WI->IL a few years ago, and it was a great way to explore Mackinac Island. We were in walking distance to the ferry and it was a more affordable way than staying on the island or the bigger hotels or craziness on the island or Mackinaw City. St. Ignace also definitely has a more authentic vibe to it. Not a ton going on, but I enjoyed it much more than Mackinaw City which felt like a very kitschy tourist trap to me. Except for the park around Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse -that was amazing. I took a dip in the summer to the right at about 11:06 in your video when I was checking off my bucket list to swim in all the Great Lakes!

@@ChrisHarden very good point about the location of the casino. The drone footage is beautiful. Just thought the drive across might be nice for those that have never driven it. Love the driving tours, but I have a suggestion that I hope will be received in the friendly manner in which it is intended. The suggestion: Slow. Down. on the narration. As a former television producer, I can say there’s a bit of a science to making sure your viewers are comprehending all they hear while also absorbing all they see. A slower rate of speech is helpful. If you, as the speaker, think the pace is just right, it’s probably too fast. If it seems too slow to you as the speaker, it’s probably about right for the viewer. It took me a while to find that balance in my old career.

Thanks for your suggestion Doc. I know that I'm not the best at everything but I'm always trying to make videos in the best way that I know how and learn how to improve my skills along the way.

Those of us who did time over on "Mackatraz Island" routinely referred to this misbegotten wide spot in the road as "Swingin' Iggy". It's where MANY of us headed when we had a day off. You can't actually buy Fudge in Iggy - They CALL it fudge, but it ain't - it's a poor substitute for the real thing, which you can only get on the Island. The stuff on the island has that authentic touch of horse-poo and lilac flavor/aroma that Iggy's pathetic imitation lacks :) On the other hand, you can get some pretty fine pasties in Iggy, though as far as I'm concerned, the best pasties are (or used to be... it's been quite a few years) to be had at The Pasty Shop, right next door to Alice's Kandy and Korn (used to be "The KarmelKorn Shoppe") on Huron, about halfway between the old State Dock where the Chief Wawatam and the old car ferries used to tie up (I think I read that the old USCG icebreaker Mackinaw is moored there as a museum ship now) and the new Star Line Ferry dock (the first one you pass when coming into MC from Cheboygan) And just for the record, its "The Straits of Mackinac", not the "straights". Take it from someone who grew up within 15 miles of the Mighty Mac...

Pretty sure the boat ride to the island is much shorter from St Ignace
@felsinferguson1125 Жыл бұрын
Not all that much. Back when I was doing it a couple times a month, the trip to/from St. Ignace was about 3-5 minutes shorter, depending on the winds, than the trip to/from Mackinaw City on the same type of boat. It also depended on which ferry you chose. The Arnold Line Cats could get you to the island (or back from it) in about 16 minutes (from untie, to tie-up - waiting for the crowd to offload could make a fairly big difference depending on which day you made the trip, no matter where your endpoints were) from MC, and about 14 minutes from SI. The Star Line "hydrojets" (The ones that have one of their engines cocked up to make a "roostertail" to make 'em look faster than they actually are) could get you there or back in about 19 minutes from MC, and about 17 minutes from SI. Never rode the Sheplers boats except as a VERY young kid (7-8 years old - school field-trip to the island) but they weren't all that much slower than the Star Line boats. The old Arnold "slowboats" were the "snails" of the ferry options - 35-40 minutes from MC (Depending on which dock you boarded at) and about 30-35 minutes in or out of SI. They might have been slow, but when the ice was breaking early in the spring, or making in the late fall/early winter, they were the only option - the other ferries simply couldn't stand up to the ice unless it was just a skim. Once REAL ice (Anything above about an inch or so thick) started making on the straits, everything but Arnold's "Ottawa" was either pulled out of the water and drydocked (Arnold's Cats) in St. Ignace, tied up at the Coal Dock on the Island side (About half of the Arnold slowboats) or run down to tie up in the Cheboygan River across from the DNR dock (most, if not all, of the Star Line and Shepler's fleets) for the winter. For me, the difference in travel time between MC and St. Ignace wasn't worth the time and cost of crossing the bridge unless I was heading across early enough at the start of the season that the only option was to catch the Ottawa out of St. Ignace to get there. Once the Cats started running for the season, I'd grab my car, cross the bridge, park in the lot behind Audie's restaurant in MC, and for the rest of the summer, I'd use the MC boats to get to and from the mainland.

Ha ha, the locals are hostile to a lot of tourist because they don't want developers sniffing around the area. They're rural and they want to keep it that way. You'd find the local shop owners a bit friendlier, but not overly welcoming. In short, they're fine with you paying a visit, but they don't want a bunch of outsiders wanting to live there.

Depends - Are you talking about the island, the town, the bridge, the coast guard icebreaker (either one of them) the fort (which one? On the mainland, or on the island) or the straits? Except for the fort on the mainland, which is pronounced "Mishilla-macki-NACK" (and there's some dispute about that, with it being a pretty even split between those who end it with "nack" and those who end it with "naw") no matter whether the last letter is a "c" or a "w", it's said "MACK-in-AWE". But then, I'm only someone who grew up literally able to look out the window from my bed at night and see the blinkers on the top of the bridge flashing, so what do I know? :)
