We know Ohio State usually starts slow, so at 10-10 I thought that was it. They finally got it going and we’ll try to run it out into a not-so-ugly score. Then came the earlier 4th quarter drive where they went all the way to the red zone. When I saw the interception I thought that was all the opportunity we’re gonna get. Honestly, the best analogy is the Battle of Stalingrad. Instead of using their advantage of rapid armored advance (outside receiving matchups), Germany (Ohio State) spent all of its resources in its obsession to capture a city of no tactical or strategic significance just for narrative and propaganda reasons (proving they can out-tough Michigan in the trenches). Instead of relying on their strength and circumnavigating their enemy and capturing the Caucus oil fields (winning the game on the outside), they played right into the Soviets' (Michigan's) hands by making it a fistfight in the trenches.

I said the same thing about the sequence in the 3rd Qtr. You could hear the collective sight of “Oh God No! Their resolve has been fleeting these past four years while Michigan’s has been championship level. Michigan doesn’t quit, especially in this matchup. OSU got knocked down really bad in that 3rd quarter and they didn’t find the ability to get up off the mat . They tried but it just never materialized.

Your analysis is spot on. Last year UM did the same thing with the defensive front and more depth with the occasional blitz (UM had a much better secondary). Things are very difficult for a passing team if the defense doesn't have to commit extra defensive resources to get pressure, ask Washington last year. The difference this year is there is little depth and a weaker secondary, which wears the defense down. Add an inept offense that can't stay on the field with a lack of line depth makes the problem worse. I kept telling OSU friends the simple fact that OSU couldn't wear down UM's defensive front was the game. OSU hasn't seen a starting defensive front with UM's talent. OSU had no confidence in Howard, and UM created the numbers in the defensive secondary to force OSU to run, which was UM's strength. Brilliant coaching strategy by UM.

Lifelong OSU fan here, that lived through the John Cooper years. The way I see it, Day and Cooper have two things in common. The first may seem trivial, but I believe it is important, is that they are both not natives of Ohio (or even the midwest in general), and have no real understanding of this rivalry, despite the lip service they both give it. The second is that they both seem to coach this game "not to lose", which is not the same as coaching "to win". They are/were just too scared of making "the big mistake", and thus are/were ultra-conservative in their approach. Ironically, ultra-conservative Jim Tressel still took more chances in this game than Day or Cooper ever have (going back to my previous point, perhaps because he is from Ohio?). Only your colleague on BNK has a better record (percentage-wise) than Tressel against the Wolverines.

Here's the thing, Joel and you can pass this along to your partner, one person embarrassed themselves and it was Ryan Day.And Gus should check with OSU and see if they have a play by play job opening up because clearly he is a HUGE Ohio State fan.

Joel can you PLEASE have your partner tone it down on the Ohio State favoritism. Absolutely love you guys commentating but Gus is hard to listen to when Ohio State is playing.

I'm a fan of you Joel but re-watch your telecast.... you... ALL GAME LONG, were explaining how OHIO needs to play to beat Michigan. AS IF it's what you wanted to see. You sounded so biased all game long, it was embarrassing. Did you give credit at times to Michigan yes, but you were so overly concerned for Ohio and what they needed to do to win, it sounded completely biased in favor of Ohio.
@Green_Arrow1188 күн бұрын
As a Michigan fan, you are completely wrong. He wasn't being biased at all. It was more of a shock value that Ohio State kept trying to run the ball in key moments in the game rather than using there 3 5* WR's. The reason he wasn't doing the same thing for Michigan because he knew they were doing exactly what they needed to do to win the game, so there is no need to comment.
@thedruekefamilyadventures88908 күн бұрын
@@Green_Arrow118and as another Michigan fan you are completely wrong. From the pregame remarks through the end of the physical altercation (and every single play in between) both Gus and Joel talked about Ohio like they are a world class team and about Michigan like they were trash. It was blatantly biased towards Ohio and embarrassing for their network how lopsided their remarks were.

Joel ! The problem , in my humble opinion , is the Offensive Line . When that center went down in practice on November 18th , things changed . After already losing their best Tackle against Oregon . The backup during the Nebraska game , the center really hurt . During the Michigan game the ball was nearly rolled back to the QB on several snaps . Kelly had no confidence in play calling and Howard was rushed .
@DylanInAlbuquerque7 күн бұрын
Gus has been losing it for years now. Last season he called a missed field goal "incomplete."
@gregj8318 күн бұрын
Whatever was going through Ryan Day and Chip Kelly's minds in that game may never be fully known. It was as if the cumulative nightmares of all of those blown games vs Michigan in the mid-90s coalesced into this one game in 2024. Gotta tip my hat to Michigan Head Coach Sherrone Moore for motivating his team like he did and to his D-Line because they dominated like no other D-Line I've ever seen.
@christianlibertarian54888 күн бұрын
From the second half of the Indiana game right through the end of this one, the Michigan defense was an absolute brick wall. I strongly agree with Joel on this point.

I kept telling my friends about how good Michigan's D-Line was but I never envisioned 2 missed field goals and 2 picks from Ohio State. Those were just killers! On one of the interceptions Will Howard was not even pressured. Very strange.

*Michigan drives the length of the field, turns it over on downs at the 3, defense forces a pick* Joel- "Michigan didnt drive the length of the field they only scored on short fields" ORRRRR, Michigan trusted their defense and thats why they played 3rd and 4th down the way they did

Not true. Michigan only had 5 first downs in three quarters and were outlined 255 yards to 133 yards

That "draw" that everyone was complaining about was actually a decent play. Oregon and Illinois had burned UM with draw plays earlier in the year. It was a safe playcall that had a good chance of hitting. Blame the fieldgoal kicker for choking.
@paulmaddreyjr79205 күн бұрын
I been saying the same exact thing. Seems like Day and Kelly wanted to win the toughness battle more than the victory. Bill Walsh pioneer of the west coast offense & those he mentored (Shanahan, Holmgren etc) passed first to set up the run. Additionally Walsh made sure he and the players were LOOSE. He once dressed as a bellhop for example. Ryan seems so tense, tight, likely filtering down to the players. Michigan always seems relaxed, confident, this isn't being talked about. IMO, there's a fine line between respect for the rival, and obsession to the point of overthinking the game. There's a reliable source(Kirk Barton buckeye scoop) revealing the players called a players only meeting w/Coach Day, which was heated, and shockingly Coach Day doubled down on the excessive running game plan. WOW

Yes, The Wolverines got the ball first and goal inside the 5 after an interception, but that was right after Michigan had turned the ball over on downs inside the 5 after driving the length of the field. Michigan almost precisely picked up right where they left off. Michigan had figured out how to run an offense with the tools that they had at Indiana (had the ball with the chance to win at the end of the game), and then against Northwestern (50-6). They controlled time of possession in the first half in the Horseshoe. Michigan made clutch 4Q plays like the catch by Peyton O'Leary, and Mullings moved the ball when they needed it. Ohio State (Day/Kelly) freaked out about the perimeter after that pick. And honestly, Michigan and now Sherrone live in Ryan Day's head. That fear and panic flows down to the team like a river. It will be very difficult for Ohio to win next year in the Big House.
@matthewknoght68168 күн бұрын
Michigan won with there offensive line and defensive line. They wore them down. Ohio couldn't block mason Graham or kg. Offensive line wore them down. Michigan had 170 rushing yards. Will Howard is mediocre at best and Michigan d line made it difficult. He had someone in his face every throw.

Michigan has superior strength and conditioning to any CFB team I'm aware of. They have *owned* the late going in big games, by and large. And the key? Rest and recovery, between very intense workouts, and the day before games. Probably no team emphasizes rest and recovery more than the Wolverines. They go in fresher, substitute often where feasible, and outlast their opponents.

No Will Johnson - not Will “Howard”. 3:21. Also, take exception to your claim that Michigan did nothing on offense. Drove the field 2x. Once stopped on 4th (barely) due to a less than great play call. Other ended by bad throw/interception. Should have had points out of each. Finally, you guys didn’t have your best day in the booth either - particularly your over-excitable and irritating partner Gus, who’s bad take on the melee post-game was historic and a joke.
