I am honestly a massive fan of both sports. Rugby at heart because of attacking and defending and the breakdown. But geez I appreciate and understand the time, effort, revision and practise that goes into every structured play in a game of American football.

I'm a rugby fan here in NZ. And I also love watching NFL highlights only! I read a NFL match takes 3hrs long but the ball is only in play on the field for a total of 11minutes. Due to a lot of stop -starts, stoppages, replays, advertising, halftime entertainment etc. Well done Jim gaining experience is key and the best place to start is with the World Champs SA.

@@archertal0762 Baseball is both the best and the worst of stop-and-start because the pace is glacial but this just increases tension during the postseason, pitch by pitch. Archer, I wonder if this is similar in 🏏 where the tension builds between each bowl?

Rugby is by far the most entertaining sport. It is non stop for 80 minutes contact unlike American football, each team can compete for the ball and win it back at anytime (playing defence and attack can switch in a second), it is without all the ad breaks, shoulder pads and helmets. All shapes and sizes play on the field at the same time. Rugby players can step and catch like a wide receiver, tackle like a cornerback, physicality of a running back, kick like a kicker and direct play and throw accurate passes (behind themselves) like a quarterback. Rugby is also played internationally rather than just the Americans with football.

Football and Rugby Played, coached, refereed both at appreciatively competitive levels. NFL - 4 hours of a one hour game played in 6 second spurts. Clock ticks as the players huddle. Ball is “in play” about 14 minutes in a game (and consider there is an offensive and defensive squad on the field, and “play” time per game per player is about 6-7 minutes). 6 second spurts agonizingly interrupted by one of 5 referees going to the booth to make a decision on a call entirely immaterial to the outcome of the play. Then the referees huddle, players call their lawyers, and a plea bargain is struck. “Play” resumes after 10 minutes. Cut to commercial. Injury? Everything stops for undetermined length of time. My god, I’m frustrated just writing this. The kick off of every game is such a great metaphor of the game itself. Huge build up . . . kickoff . . . touch back. Sigh. Rugby - 80 minutes of uninterrupted play. No commercials. One referee and 2 sideline judges he can choose to consult or not. 5 minutes of pounding offloads with sometimes 20 phases (downs) before a stoppage or score. Kicks for territory, multiple ways to score, creativity abounds. Was that a penalty? Referee didn’t see it, or deemed the infringement immaterial to the outcome - play on. Injured player? If he’s not in the way - play on. Was that a punch behind play? Referee didn’t see it - play on and let the players sort it out. The players police themselves. The line of “scrimmage” is an embarrassing bastardization of the restart Rugby scrummage where BOTH teams contest for possession. And it’s not a “touchdown”, it’s a “crossover”. The score is determined by the ball crossing the goal line. There is no need to touch the ball down to the ground in the in goal area with control as Rugby dictates. Imagine if the athletic specimens in the NFL were aerobically fit and knew the game of Rugby. They would dominate the world stage. And how can the Super Bowl winner be a “world” champion when America is the only country with a ruined expression of such a great international game?

If football players learn how to do rugby tackles, it will prevent them from sustaining a lot of head injuries. Otherwise, get rid of the helmets and they won’t be tackling with their heads anymore. Helmets give them a false sense safety. Tuesday - March 23, 2021.

Andrew Adendorff they would. Look at the "facts". Rugby is played by the "elite" class, basically the rich schools at schoolboy level. America would have enough money to put it into every school. NZ, Australia, SA, England, it’s all in the elite schools. Also, the US have 300M people, 24M of them play American Football. And, less than 24M ppl play Rugby around the whole world.
