Onaway State Park-Beach Fossils and Sinkholes

Nancy and I head out to Onaway State Park to look for rocks on the shore of Black Lake. Then we're off to some nearby sinkholes, and finally dinner at Knaebe's. I polished up several of the fossils I found because I know you like to see those.

Those polished up very nicely. I live a few miles from Knaebe's, they have all kinds of great stuff. The owner was our family dentist and was a the best dentist I ever had, I might add. He must have loved his work too, he was always humming away like he was perfectly contented. Honestly wish dental care was as as good and as affordable as it was back then. Not that you ever really look back fondly in regards to going to the dentist but I do miss having him as my our Dentist.

I had no idea the owner was a dentist. Those are pretty different occupations. He has been really successful as an apple farmer too. Great food and drinks at the restaurant too.

Good stuff. Went to Knaebe's yesterday, best cider around, and the colors are in full swing through Presque Isle Co. Also visited Onaway State Park last year and found piping plover eggs nestled among the upper shoreline rocks along Black Lake, something else to look for.

I have seen those at Vermillion Point, up on Lake Superior. They study them there every summer and rope off the nest.

I did all those videos out west this spring and showed them for the first half of the summer, and then went out with Sam and Kyle and Jonathan. She did come out with Nat and Paul, though.

I grew up going to our family place on Black river. My sister still has a place on the river. Black Lake is awesome for fishing and boating but really didn’t know about the rocks. We found a big area of woods where someone dug up the ground and cut wood. We went during the rain and found lots of great stuff. So much fun thanks.

I love the intermix of discovery and polishing. Very interesting. That Charlevoix/horn coral was amazing. Also, the ferns growing on the floor of the hardwood forest were beautiful. You didn't comment on them, they weren't the focus at that poing, but I saw them and thought they were beautiful. Thanks. Nice video.

It's cool to see rocks on an inland lake! My Grandma lived on East Twin Lake in Lewiston, MI and her shore was full of rocks. Not like these here though. Not limestone. I remember them being more like the rocks on Lake Huron. They were quite slimy in that particular lake cause it wasn't very clean. I do know that the soil in that area has a lot of natural gravel in it. I've had to dig some holes in that area and the digging was tough! Decent size rocks too. I've also been to the sink holes near shoepack lake!

Not all inland lakes are like this. I grew up on had rocks very much like what I find on Lake Huron.

Great work finding and polishing those rocks. I've found brachiopods that have weathered out of that limestone bedrock in the area of that boat launch. Wonderful video. I need to go to Knabe's too. I usually pass it on my way to somewhere else too. It was nice to see Nancy too!

My first rock picking with my grandson was at black lake. Like you, my first impression was lotsa "junk rock". Very rough, but the Petosky pattern was clear and well formed on some of it, so I took one home and polished it up. Turned out to be a very nice stone and reminds me of a special time with family every time I see it! Black lake has some quality stones, but don't tackle them without mechanical assistance! There is no big lake surf sanding to help the process along.

Someone told me that the park had that rock dumped there. Do you know if that's true? I can't imagine dumping that much rock there. I have never been to any other part of the lake to know what the rocks look like on other beaches.

I've never heard of a sinkhole falling in in modern times. I have often wondered if those form slowly or if they collapsed all at once.

@@MichiganRocks Have you seen the video of the sinkhole in Louisiana in 2013? Scary stuff. It's online. Michigan had one in 2016, cost millions. Florida has had recent sinkholes also. I pray you never witness one where your lake is. Take care. Be aware. 😅

@MichiganRocks next time on your way north map out the exit in Wolverine and take the Pigeon River State forest road it starts as Webb road then East Webb road, then turn north on Osmund road to M68 that goes to Onaway east or Indian River west. Very worth the time and you should see the elk or if in fall hear them. 😀 I live one mile from Onaway and have them on our property. Beautiful animals!!!

I’m not sure what kind the last mushroom in the video was but I had a bunch of those pop up under my blue spruce trees a few years back. Some were really large and reminded me of sesame seed topped hamburger buns. The pizzza looked great !

Great finds! I've been finding something similar to the charlevoix stone near me but I've not been able to identify it yet. The last big rain dumped a bunch of strange coral fossils in to my favorite rock spot.

@@MichiganRocks Nope! SE Texas, of all places. The rockhounding here is always interesting. For instance, the last trip out, I found a horn coral, 2 species of palm wood, what I'm guessing is a stromatolite fossil with a spiral shell imprint on the top, several types of agate, and a chunk of some type of hexacorallia. I've been told that the last ice age dumped the weirdest stuff here.

I'm right on the border of where there is a type of pet wood called snake wood. The patterning on it is unique. I might have found a few pieces but haven't gotten a positive ID. It is supposed to be more common NW around the College Station area.

I don't know when the sinkholes formed. I don't think it was recently at all considering that everything looked pretty well forested over.

Oh really? That explains why it is so angular. I assume it was for erosion control. What was there before?

@@MichiganRocks it’s been there awhile. Not sure how long. I had also heard rumors there were tons of fossils there. My dad said no way so we went a few weeks ago and found just like you did. My dad said yes they hauled it in for erosion purposes. The campground on the other side of the lake beaches are all sand.

My husband and I live in OHIO and want to make a second vacation towards Michigan. We are new to rock hunting. Few questions 1. Are we allowed to take rocks from the beaches? 2. Which beach would you recommend for new hunters 3. Any hotels or places to stay that you would suggest. Sorry seems like a lot to ask, but we really enjoy your shows and hoping for some guidance.. I'd suggest going to Lake Superior for the best rocks. I live here, so I can't really recommend hotels since I just come home or camp in a tent. Send me an email and I'll give you a list of some places that I've been with short descriptions. [e-mail]. You might also consider going to Nether's Farm in your own state for Flint Ridge flint. I do. Even if the rock is rounded the rock surface is usually pretty rough. That first stage makes a pretty big difference.

@@MichiganRocks nothing but weeds taller than me and tons of mosquitoes. I was hoping for some cool rocks since they were so deep but couldn’t even look for any. Very warm down there like a green house. And ocqueoc falls used to be more rustic and natural Till a few years ago. Still a great place. Still like to go even though I’ve practically grew up there. Right in Rodgers city near the calcite plant there’s a children’s park on Huron has fossils and lots of petoskey stones there’s one park bench marks the spot. My favorite place.

The last shroom was the Fly Agaric. They're is a story that that mushroom is where Santa Claus came from, flying reindeer and elves and magical Santa. They claim the mushroom is poisonous but no ones ever died from it. The Scandinavian people would boil the mushrooms 🍄 then drink the liquid and have physcadelic experience and there's Santa. Lol
