Hello, I cast aluminum. I have cast 6061 acluminum. Can 7075 be cast? If so, does it lose its hardness properties?
@MichlinMetals3 жыл бұрын
Yes it can. Neither 6061 or 7075 will develop full properties unless solution treated and aged. As cast properties will not be predictable

7075 can be punch or worked in a press but you are not really supposed to because rough surfaces can cause cracks. We run jobs that are 7075 but the parts only go through 1 cycle so I can get away with punching the holes and countersinking and tapping them on our vipros 568.

Which one is best and worst for manufacturing bicycle frames in terms of fatigue life over cycle use?
@MichlinMetals2 жыл бұрын
Many different materials make satisfactory bike frames. 4130 AQ structural tubing is used in some higher performance frames. Best and worst depends on the bike design and budget.

I brought a bicycle made of 6061. Is that a good thing? It is my first bike. What should I know about that metal in terms of taking care of it.
@MichlinMetals3 жыл бұрын
6061 is standard fare when it comes to Aluminum. I would just make sure to clean your frame every one and a while with a damp cloth that isn't abrasive so you won't scratch the surface. I hope you enjoy your bike. I love riding!

7075 is actually not very hard its about like 6061 but has high tensile strength. It seems a little less brittle than 2024

Why do coatings companies say 7075 cant be coated? Nikasil for instance...
@MichlinMetals2 жыл бұрын
Chemical composition of 7075 contains elements that interfere with many electrochemical processes

@@MichlinMetals Can you expand on that?
@MichlinMetals2 жыл бұрын
Without any more specific questions it's hard to "expand" on a general request let's say. I want to answer your question and I believe I can try to help :) Just need what other specifics you might require, however please do keep in mind, Michlin doesn't really work w/many coatings let's say so it's not something I really deal with on a daily basis.

Great video. Thanks. A question: In Al 5083 H321 i dont get what the H321 means. Or specifically the 321. Can you please explain it to me?
@MichlinMetals Жыл бұрын
H tempers are cold worked to increase strength. The 3 indicates cold work plus a stabilizing low temperature heat treatment after cold work. The 2 is the relative strength where 8 is the maximum. The 1 indicates that the amount of cold work was slightly less than for H32. Applicable to alloys with 4% Mg in their composition.

Are there any US based suppliers of aluminum 7068 that dont have a minimum order requirement of anything over a ton?
@MichlinMetals2 жыл бұрын
This alloy doesn't exist in distribution. There would be a mill minimum here to the best of my knowledge. I haven't seen it in the wild in all my years of buying/selling.

I love aluminium products, it's lustre and shine are beautiful! I was looking out for an aluminium watering can, but could only find plastic and steel. Some aluminium alloys are very tough. Recycling aluminium takes 20 times less energy then turning bauxite into new metal. Aluminium, copper, lead and stainless steel are my favourite metals and alloys. Aluminium is light strong and does not rust, they should make all cars out of it, or stainless steel. I don't know why some metal items rust when you could easily make it last for ever and a day! Steel is relatively cheep. If I ever buy a car, it's going to be either aluminium, stainless steel or carbon fibre!

What does wrought mean for metals?
@MichlinMetals2 жыл бұрын
Wrought Aluminum is created when you take pure Aluminum and combine it with other alloying elements to create a new "grade" of Aluminum. Does that help?

The video before this one explains the different tempers and on the website below, there's a description at the bottom of the transcript that might suffice. If that fails, let me know and I will get you a better explanation: www.michlinmetals.com/introduction-to-aluminum-the-heat-treated-tempers-7075-t7351-6061-t6-2024-t351/

Hi Michael, i'm currently building a race motorbike, planning on building my own alloy frame. Do you have any suggestion on what aluminum series i should use and the treatment that comes with it? Thanks ✌🏻
@MichlinMetals Жыл бұрын
Fabricating aluminum for a frame is difficult. You may want to consult a shop that does frames for bikes, aircraft, hang gliders etc Motor sports often use 4130 tubing for frames and structural components as it is typically stronger and stiffer.
