Mich, not sure if it’s been mentioned yet, but you could add plywood on top of your bed boards, that way from the bottom it looks rustic, but what you’re laying on is strong. I was concerned as you were crawling on the boards, as I could see them bend, ultimately making them shorter, which could then fall out. Stay safe. 🇨🇦

First of your videos I've watched, the algorithm worked for you, yay! 😆 For your loft/bed space, those boards are going to flex too much and will begin to fail over time. I get that you'd prefer to keep the aesthetics, which is why I'm guessing you didn't set it up in a joist style configuration. Something to consider, to keep the aesthetics but give yourself considerable more security I'd suggest building out a cross brace system from underneath, kind of like how you would find on a barn door. Since you already have your beam in place, instead of trying to get the cross braces notched in, use some rafter ties/hold-downs or corner braces to tie the wooden cross brace to your beams. You could spray paint them black to give them a nicer look. Then for the cross braces themselves, wood glue and screws only long enough to get through the brace and your floor. I would split the length of the opening in 2, and either run 2 thick braces at mirrored angles across or use some thinner stock and make an X in the 2 spaces.

Small tip for the side road Pick your self up a portable air compressor when driving the narrow section with all the ruts air down your tires to 12psi. You will have way less issues driving the road. Re- air up back on the main road.

A major truck difference going from unleaded to diesel is the substantially heavier front end. The 2500 Duramax is designed/expecting to have weight in the bed or towing. From experience with mine, if you add a few hundred pounds of ballast in the bed and you'll find the traction, tracking, and stability will greatly improve.

Yeah, but in that deeper snow, especially heavier snow, like that seems to be, once it grabs you and sends you off track, there's not much you can do but ride it out. Been there done that on my older, heavier 4X4s or my newer Trail Boss.

The drive out & loss of control scared me even though I already knew you were OK. Your self-reliance in how you tackle problems in sketchy conditions inspires me. The recycled wood loft and view are superb! I imagine happy times spent falling asleep and waking up to that incredible view. Your cabin looked like a peppermint candy with all the snow and red and green tape. Truly inviting in any weather. On another note, my 96-year-old friend showed me how she uses a small sheet of crumpled waxed paper as fire starter for her kindling or feather sticks. Works like a charm for a quick starting a fire.

The inner cross beam of your loft bed where you notched out the ends: the extended piece of the beam that it hangs on seems rather thin. I would question the long-term structural integrity of that beam depending upon who-all and what-all you have up there. Thoughts include such things as other people using that loft where the weights might get higher than you have anticipated as a static load and any dynamic loads that will occur. Just a thought.

Agreed. Concerning. I'm no expert, but due to this weak point, it looks like the beam essentially has the load bearing strength of a 2x4 lying flat. You should be able to significantly improve the situation if you can find a properly fitting, metal, Face Mount Joist Hanger PS - that notch at 22:00 -- maybe screw in a 2x2 strip below the notch for added load bearing. Love your videos, Michelle! Even when your mrain is bush 🙂

Ya me too. The beam will split at the notch. Would have been better to taper the top. I would like to see 3, 3/8 or 1/2 inch threaded rods front to back also, to keep the bed boards from slipping out.

Hey Michelle, new to your site. Love it !! If you k own any good blacksmiths , they could forge you a rustic oversize joist hanger type of metal to give you the much needed support. I agree with the others that more weight etc may lead to the weaker end giving out. Just my 2 cents worth !

I always have to laugh when someone says it's below zero. I almost thought you meant that it was cold. Then I realized that you meant C. Try heating up your cabin from 10 F. I think if you put a single strip of aged wood across the center of your bed boards on the bottom and screw each board to that center strip it would tie all of the boards together to spread the load on them when you are up there.

Hello Michelle good to hear your okay, that kind of stuff is a little unnerving. The loft is taking shape, one more section would really balance the look and then put a second layer to have a bit more room uptop. It's taking shape just fine. Once you have the stone on that will help hold the heat longer. Stay warm and safe and have a great week, and God bless amen.

Engineer a portable front railing that can be raised for work/snow/safety etc sessions and lowered for enjoyment/ relaxation periods so as to not take away the beautiful views you have captured from your deck and cabin yet provide a safety when needed! A lightweight pulley and winch system at the front corners could solve the problem which would raise/lower a barrier to prevent an accident. With your skills, talents, and aesthetic prowess, you can get both easily! Really enjoy your creativity and ingenuity. Doug Robison

After reading all of the comments about your cabin front view and the potential for having a fall off the deck, I certainly would recommend a woven rope catch about five feet wide from the edge outward and along the length of the longest deck side, like they use for trapeze performers in the circus, placed around the outside edge of the deck placed level grade or slightly below deck level so as to not impede the fabulous view but also stop anyone leaving the deck hard surface inadvertently. This could be made by weaving strong enough rope in a tight “X” pattern ( 5 x 10 ) feet long which would allow rain/snow to fall thru but stop a human body from continuing to the ground and on down the steep slope. This could be supported by 4 poles 5 feet long outward from the deck to attach the rope “catch” to. This could be done frugally, aesthetically, and relatively quickly done yet still provide some safety protection while not creating ongoing maintenance issues. Good luck if you choose to accept this mission! This is only a suggestion and there never was or will be any intent to tell you what or should do if anything. Again, I enjoy your presentations and look forward to reading/viewing them often! Lt Col Doug Robison USAF Ret./ Capt. UAL Ret.

It gets me through the night and I can can easily heat it in very cold conditions. You might upgrade your stove, I know those small stoves work in small areas but they are working hard to heat things up and take continual restocking. Just a thought. Good work, glad you didn't die. I see your Mr. Buddy sitting there, it can help take the chill off quicker if combined with your fire. I use the 20# tanks with the adapter hose, can last quite a while, but harder to haul up/down. Truck bed weights make a huge difference. I made a couple, years ago, out of 6" PVC pipe filled with sand, as sand bags eventually burst and make a mess. I cut the PVC almost the length of the bed, fill with sand, screw plugs on the ends, then put one on each side of the truck bed, bungee cords to attach to sides of bed at wheel-wells to keep them from rolling around. It's almost a 2-person job to get them in and out, but you only do it 2x per year. You can also lay a piece of plywood across them to create a shelf bed to toss things under for more storage.

Great job on the loft but you are right about people questioning the structural integrity of those thin loft boards but.... if you think it's good for you then who else matters? It looks fantastic and you have a million dollar view. Enjoy the fruits of your hard labour, you are amazing!

What a beautiful view to wake up to from the cliff cabin loft. Glad your new truck got no damage. That had to be scary.

You could easily add some half inch plywood or OSB, or something of that nature and glue it on top of the wood strips to add structural integrity to your sleeping loft. Then cover it with foam or bedding, and no one would see it. three tubes of construction adhesive should do the trick.

I definitely think you need some more aggressive tires. I can see why you want the loft in the front. Since you have that sliding door in the front, you won't notice the light lost from the loft. Please take steps to stay safe in the loft. It may grow tiresome having to feed the stove from the loft.

You might want to think about also putting down a piece of 1/4-3/8 plywood or chip board in the loft for strength and rigidity, Screw it down in multiple areas and it will give a ton of strength and you wont lose the aesthetics from below.

You are doing good work, nice look on the loft! I would get thermal blanket material. and make yourself some window coverings to drop down at least during the night to stop one of the biggest entrances of cold into your cabin. Glass as you know is a poor insulator compared to wood. I know you are working on it, but I would put labor into sealing as many interior air leaks as possible before i did other things inside. Your interior air temps will rise with the same amount of heat.

Zipper SLIDES are easy to fix. Amazon has kits and replacement "slides." I've fixed many zippers with the Amazon slide kits.

Michelle, remember that wood works with changes in temperature, it would be necessary for you to tie those boards of the bed that you built, the groove that you made in the beam may not be enough to structure and keep the boards in its position, it can cause a drop!!!!🤗🤗

I think a moveable loft on a track like a garage track would be cool, so you can roll it to the window when going to bed and then back to the back side to let more light in durring the day. The stove pipe would have to be moved through the wall and up the outside wall. Just a thought. It also looks great the way it is, great job Michelle!

Good to see you back on... I was out with my internet down for 10 days. Bad news from here... my lab dog Holly-11 years old has lung, spleen and kidney cancer... 4-6 weeks.. she's such a sweety. I don't want to put her down. She isn't in any pain, just tired and not eating much.

Hey Michelle, love love love your channel. You had asked how big a workshop should you build. I went through the same thought process and made a mistake. I build a 12 x 16 ft and realized that this size was a storage shed not a workshop. I spent so much time moving stuff to be able to work. I ultimately built a 40 x 80 ft workshop and it is perfect. I am not suggesting you do one that big, but I think that a 20 x 30 ft workshop is the minimal size. Building anything smaller is beneath your skill level. Since you will be building next to your home, you will have a lot more time since you don't have the travel time. Cant wait to see what you do!

Just a suggestion, I had a zip up hoody with a bad zipper, I simply used a pair of pliers to give the zipper a "little squeeze" and it returned to working order. it worked fine for a year or more and then started coming apart on its own again, will try it one more time but if not, at least I got another year or more out of it.

Your incredible vision is becoming a reality. Congratulations on this milestone. I will join with others, pleading that you install safety railings around your deck. Vertical posts bolted to the pilings with rope slung in between until a better design presents itself. Perhaps volleyball netting mounted vertically and horizontally just below the deck surface to capture falling items too. Dear Michelle, we want you and your pack to be safe. Wishing you, Steve and your pack a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peace princess.

If you're allowed (some municipalities here don't allow them) chains drastically improve traction and having 20psi in your tires will double the amount of traction if you are traveling on dirt, asphalt or gravel.
