Nice! Thank you for this video :) I've also watched Rick's drum videos! Great stuff!

Thank you for doing this! I was just thinking about the differences in sound with single vs dual mic setups.

great comparison! now I'm curious as to wether this would make as much of a different if you don't have bottom heads

It would be cool to see different microphones used like a Shure Beta 56A on top and Audix D2 on bottom

Sounds nice clean and tight snares carry that pop.

Have you tried Bonham style of miking the drums?

DM20? May I ask if you can do it on snare top and bottom? if it is good because I saw it on TB waiting room he use that mic for top and bottom. Can't find any videos on it Thanks.

Couple of questions for you: 1. Did you phase align the waves between the two mic? By this I mean aligning not just flipping the polarity, but also aligning the time? 2. Have you tried using just the bottom mics, but phase aligning those with the overheads (only really works with the overheads in ORTF or XY, no AB btw)? A stereo pair of overheads will already be capturing plenty of attack. Micing the toms both ends, and phase aligning both with the overheads will give the best result, but if someone has fewer mics then micing from the bottom and phase aligning that to the overheads, will do the better job.

I didn't align phase no, all I do is either flip or not flip polarity. I haven't phase aligned the bottom mics either. That's a nice trick about micing the bottom if you're using overheads!

Thanks Tom! Glad to hear that, what are some other topics you’d be interested in?

@@bobdrums Generally, I like your comparison videos most. I think I see a Shure Beta 181 to the side in this video and I'd love to see a comparison between it and and the DM20s on toms (bonus for including a 421 since it is a tom-mic standard). Second idea pitch, I think it would be interesting to have a video on "budget kick-out" options. Lots of opinions in forums about what to use in lieu of a 47fet, but not a lot of videos about it on youtube. I think you've got a Solomon LoFreq, but can you get a 57 or 421 to sound as good with EQ? Third idea pitch, mixing drums -- what might be some go-to starting settings for novices? What are the order of operations -- EQ then compression then reverb, or what? I know mixing is a huge topic, but a series of "10-minute low down" video on snares, toms, kick, then bringing them together might get a lot of interest from those new to mixing. Best of luck! -T

Great, I’m planning more comparisons soon! Good eye, it is indeed a beta 181 and it will be appearing in comparisons soon. I do have a budget behringer 19a so that could be the start of a budget kick mic shootout, I’ll make a note of that one too. That’s cool to hear you’d be interested in mixing, it’s something I’ve thought about but wasn’t too sure. So far I’ve just got 1 video on recording drums in logic. Thanks for the thoughts! Bob

does it matter if the top and bottom mics are same model?
@bobdrums2 жыл бұрын
Not at all! You could even get more character using different mics on top & bottom
