Extract from Mick’s website: Mick Flannery was brought up on a farm outside Blarney, Co. Cork, Ireland. His first real connection to music was watching an unplugged Nirvana covering Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World”. After a stint in a music college in Cork, he travelled to the U.S. where he “wandered around for a time.” While there, he entered the U.S. Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee and, to his surprise, won two top awards for his compositions. If asked, Mick adamantly refuses to talk about himself. The best you’ll get from him on any given day is, maybe, an admission that he’s a bit “grumpy” and he enjoys a good game of poker. So, if you’re determined to get up close and personal with Mick Flannery, you’re gonna’ have to kick back and listen to his music because that’s where he actually talks about himself. Mick writes all of his songs (words and music) and plays both piano and guitar. “Mick Flannery is a singing and songwriting force to be reckoned with.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times. “Mick is a songwriter of the first order … His voice is pained, gravelly, and powerful. Recorded or live, it carries through and stops you in your tracks.” Urban Folk, New York

Extract from Wikipedia:
His debut album ‘Evening Train’ featured tracks which had previously won Flannery two categories at the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, as judged by his idol, Tom Waits. He was the first Irish musician to win in this event. Flannery was reared on farmland outside Blarney, County Cork. Coming from a family with a keen musical interest, Flannery was introduced to folk and blues music at a young age. However, he is keen to express his fondness for stonemasonry and its position alongside his music: "I wasn't going to sit in a room and write songs seven days a week and live on bread and beans. I liked doing stonemasonry as well". He still does it on an occasional basis: "We wouldn’t be carving gravestones or anything. We’d do the fronts of houses, entrance walls, stuff like that".
From MySpace:
Mick can best be described (if you have to go there) as a folk rock singer/songwriter. He’s an experienced performer, having toured extensively in Ireland (his homeland), parts of the U.S., Israel and assorted other places of interest. Currently, he continues to perform in and about Ireland before sold-out crowds. Mick writes all of his own music and lyrics. His original concept album, “Evening Train”, boasts eleven tracks telling the story of a week in the lives of two brothers, and it has been reviewed as containing “astute and sophisticated lyrics” and “strong, imaginative melodies”. Mick is the first Irish musician to win awards in the prestigious U.S. International Songwriting Competition - “The Tender” won First Prize in the “Lyrics Only” category; “In the Gutter” took First Place in the “Folk/Singer-Songwriter” category (Judges included Tom Waits, Loretta Lynn, Sonny Rollins, John Scofield, Macy Gray and others).
Okay, so that’s a little history on Mick Flannery. As to the future, Mick has just completed his first CD for EMI Ireland, "White Lies", wihch is now available for sale throughout Ireland. As to the personal side of Mick, well, we’re still not gonna’ tell you what he likes to eat and drink, his favorite color, or things like that. We’ll keep it all a secret (just for now). But we will say this - he’s very talented, very nice and very cute. :o
“Astute and sophisticated lyrics, strong imaginative melodies, consummate musicianship on both piano and guitar, and a voice that somehow manages to sound long experienced in the ways of the world.” The Evening Echo
