I used to listen to this song all the time thinking Mick came up with the beginning verse, it wasn't until I took a African American Literature class that I found out he took the beginning verse from Gewndolynn Brooks! We were assigned to listen to the spoken version and write an analysis on it. I was in the middle of the poem when I was like "wait... I've heard this before." I was able to hum the tune but it took me until this song came on later that day that I realized it was this song. Mick is on another level fr.

You would think that one would start rapping about video games, digital elements or something in the like listening only to the beat. Instead of that, Jenkins used the childlike innocence of the beat, the playful and bubbly sound of the synth melody, to give account to some of the troubles these young fellows deal with growing up and trying to 'be cool'. Not even touching the beauty of making Gwendolynn's into a melodic hook. Masterpiece.

Gwendolyn Brooks is the author of "We Real Cool" which is the poem that Mick references in his Hook/Chorus. Gwendolyn wrote this poem when she noticed 7 young men playing pool rather than being at school. Gwendolyn's apprehension (anxiety that something bad will happen) is that she feels like these young men are headed in a downward spiral due to their poor habitual patterns (skipping school). This is a very basic explanation of what that title might mean.
