Steve Jansen one of the all time underrated greats. He along with Copeland plus the drummers from Devo and The Who these guys were true legends of the art.

What a good looking band Japan were, music, style, no other band compared to them or has since matched them, they were truly unique.

What a remarkable track this is - there was nothing like it before or since. Blessed to have been around in the 80's!!! The most inventive decade by a country mile for my money.

You can think what u like about the individuals in Japan and reasons for them splitting up, but as band they almost reached sublime heights.

Tsuchiya going Belew and Fripp on us for our pleasure ; great revisited funk groove with a killer bass line. Japan transformed from cheap glam rock to inspired creative tech rock for the ages.
@carls23186 жыл бұрын
I don't hear ANY Fripp type guitar mannerisms, but Belew definitely.
@DonHaka5 жыл бұрын
their earliest albums were very creative and inspired for being glam rock though. Not as much as Tin Drum but they always employed that kind of style. Songs like Wish You Were Black, Obscure Alternatives and Love is Infectious prove that.

Great post. I hadn't seen this before. Besides the fact that they were (IMHO) the most musically talented and innovative band of that 79-83 era... they were just so fucking cool!!! I've been listening to Mick's bass playing for 30 years.... I just never tire of his sound... It will live on forever.

Videos at that time... But the music speaks for itself. The art of parties blew my mind first time I heard it and still does some thirty years later.

Way before its time. Very 80s but at the same time so futuristic.
I don't think I realised at the time when I first saw Japan in my teens what god damned brilliant musicians and artists they really were. This is a treat of a trip down memory lane for me. And, David , I still think ur gorgeous babe!!! Thanx for the memories boys! love xxx

Much respect for Rob Dean, and his work with Japan, but Tsuchiya was much better
@DonHaka5 жыл бұрын
Tsuchiya might have been technically better than Dean, but i prefer Dean's playing on the records he played on because of his melodic playing. Tsuchiya only played the parts that Sylvian wrote and recorded pretty much. No offense meant to Tsuchiya, he is a great guitarplayer.

Looks like Mick was using a fretted Wal on this one. Especially the way he's slapping and hammering-on instead of sliding. Pretty cool as I thought he played fretless exclusively. Anyway, great live version!!

Guitarist reminds me a bit of Adrian Belew owing to the beat up strat and the vibrato -induced wails. Really like Mick Karn's sound. Interesting song overall.

ah, i did love this band; david's guitar isnt even plugged in, though, i reckon. i've seen him play guitar many times since, and he's no guitarist. it hasnt aged well though, has it, this music? whereas some of (not all) sylvian's solo stuff will last forever. japans best track? television, off adolescent sex, or the other side of life..

what tribute to mick karn? they dont show him at all! he is a fenomena!
@richtenbacker4 ай бұрын
Little wonder with cuts like this that he would corroborate with the likes of Fripp and Eno. One only has to listen to Tin Drum to realise they were head and shoulders above their peers at that time.

@102straz3 Жыл бұрын
This is from October 1982, just before the start of the 'Farewell Tour' so the guest guitarist is Masami Tsuchiya from Yellow Magic Orchestra. At that point, Rob Dean had been told that his services were no longer needed -in a very lame, mealy-mouthed way- more than one year before so sadly he never really got to enjoy Japan's brief time as a major band in the UK (after those long years of struggle and bad reviews.) Barbieri is there, on the left, wearing a white jacket. You can see a glimpse of him at the end of the song. Basically the guy directing this TV show just chooses to ignore him and as a matter of fact Rick was also largely ignored by the people filming the concerts for the Oil on Canvas live anthology -to the point he had to go back to a video production studio after the Tour for a few shots of him miming keyboard parts that would be added to the final product... As for Masami, he's all over the place on the Oil on Canvas video tape... I guess Virgin were expecting to shift a lot of units in his country.
