This talk by Mick Cooper presents the core ideas of Buber's classic 1923 text, 'I and Thou', and how it underpins an ethical, relational approach to psychotherapy.
Mick explains how Buber's 'I-Thou' stance differs from the 'I-It' stance, and what it means for counselling and psychotherapeutic work.
The talk was delivered as a seminar on the 18th Jan 2022 to the Midwest Regional Group of the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy

Brilliant teaching, thank you. It took me a while to get through it, because I kept stopping to ponder. The message, especially at the end, was loud and clear-our I-Thou can give people an opportunity to experience a different kind of relationship that may transpire into a renewal of hope. Thanks Mick

I found basic existential-phenomenological training and work on I-Thou useful in dealing with aspects of Codependency/ recovery and the imperative to look at relation between self and others..and what detachment/ separateness means as well as connectedness

Thanks Mick. I really enjoyed that and how you made it all so easy to understand (I love that about you). I can really see how the I-Thou concept will give me the foundation above everything else. The healing comes from the therapeutic relationship.

Really enjoyed this, Mick. Been reading a lot of Kierkegaard myself and that's pretty tough going! Dostaevsky has a lot to say on these matters as well.

Thanks Mick. I-thou seems to have some similarities with Buddhism/Mysticism/Vedanta in a non-dual kind of sense

Thank u for the talk - with regards to the experience of the "it" and the "thou". Is it not more helpful for the "i" to think of themselves in terms of being the "thou" to start, with regards to the multiple "i", irrespective of either the "i - it" or "i - thou" relationship that has been generated. As making reference to the alliance, a client will most probably initiate an experience of the "i - it" relationship thus impacting on the experience of the therapist as an "it". And the experience of being an "it". So is the journey of the therapist to first identify as a "thou" before they can engage in an "i - thou" relationship in which to support growth?
