People always say Phil and Tiger played bad and it was a bad pairing but it doesn't do justice to just how remarkable Monty and Padraig were. They blitzed Tiger and Phil and never stopped.
@JonHop18 ай бұрын
I dont know what your talking about, Tiger and Mickelson were just straight bad.. Monty and Harrinton didnt even play THAT good.. They just made key shots at good times, and made a few big putts.. Which is what ANY good team or player is supposed to do big Tournaments to win... Tiger and Mickelson had plenty of opportunities to win here... They never stepped up... Their putting was terrible as well.

I was there on Friday and it was embarrassing. Monty and Harrington were really good, but Phil had just switched equipment and He and Tiger didn't get along. The overall atmosphere wasn't good, you could cut the tension between Phil and Tiger with a knife. Sutton was too bullheaded to admit it was a bad pairing and did it again in the afternoon.

Harrington and Monty is a great pairing, both such no nonsense doggedly determined characters that were really suited to matchplay. They probably saw that within each other and that's why they gelled so well together. Phil and Tiger two brilliant individuals, but as many have said you would probably be better off playing them with someone else, particularly Phil as another player could have really benefited from playing with him. Tiger for some reason never really got going at the ryder cup and as we saw over the years it didn't really matter who you put him with and I'd imagine it would have been almost intimidating playing with him for some.
@Ghostshadows30611 ай бұрын
No I think it’s fair to say Tiger and Phil were bad together. They were bad by themselves for that matter as the two best players of their era who combined for around 130 wins and 21 or 22 majors over 20 years should have had better than average records in the Ryder Cup. Monty and Harrington were great players but Tiger and Phil sucked in the Ryder Cup.
@JonHop18 ай бұрын
@@Ghostshadows306 That's because your need sportsmanship and communication to win as a team. Phil and Tiger are 2 of the most egotistical people in golf history. Ego doesnt go well in a team tournament like the Ryder Cup.

This match really did set the tone for the whole week. Wasn't really much to split the 12 individuals on either team in terms of ability, but the outcome can only be described as a masterclass from Langer and a disasterclass from Sutton. This was Tiger and Phil's 4th cup together as teammates, yet Kite, Crenshaw and Strange had never elected to put them together as a pair, but you knew Sutton was the calibre of captain to take the chance with it. As we know, it backfired massively on the US team as a whole, the US never led a single match at any point in the Friday fourballs, and it was only in part down to Chris Riley holing a 6-footer on 18 that kept them from being whitewashed. Even stranger was they were paired together AGAIN, in FOURSOMES. Anyway analysis over, love watching this Ryder Cup back time and time again, Bernhard's pairing and man management was the best I've ever witnessed for a captain at the time. Not to mention this Ryder Cup saw the debut of our trustworthy postman.

And this was the part of his career his swing really declined massively... Im guessing partly due to injury and partly due to overthinking things and making lots of micro changes. When Tiger tee'd off, his swing would always look so powerful and torquey... No matter what club he used. And he was always aggressive. Here, he played so passively. I dont think Tiger had long drive once throughout all 18 holes.. Which is honestly insane. He clearly was lacking confidence here.

Wow. Montgomerie before he got old and fat, and Padraig Harrington had BLONDE hair. This is the year they played the PGA in Rochester, in August. Half way into the 2nd round the lights went out in Upstate New York (and Ohio where the fault originated), so I had to drive back to the nuclear power plant I was working at, and missed the rest of the day. Tiger was not having fun that day. Got to see a couple of Mickelson's incredible recovery shots, as he was all over the place with driver. What an entertaining hoot that was. Also got to see Byron Nelson, seated like the King of Golf in an overstuffed throne next to the first tee, receiving the homage of every man who teed off. Pretty good run for a Texas farmer...lol
