Way to GO, Mickey! The original by Journey and sung by Steve Perry is an irreplaceable classic, of course. But to compare the quality of Mickey's vocals with that of Steve's is only to consider which style happens to be one's particular favorite and is purely subjective. This is the first time I've heard Mickey on this song and I happen to now prefer Mickey's vocals over what happens to be one of my favorite songs by Steve. Some commenters below, in efforts to defend their favorite, stoop to pathetically low levels in making derogatory comments that are obviously untrue to anyone who is objective. State your favorite, and maybe why they are, and then let it go. One doesn't make Steve or Mickey better by writing cutting (and false) comments about the other.

I'm sure if you had Steve Perry sing "Jane" by Jefferson Starship it would sound awesome. It wouldn't be like hearing Mickey sing it though, not quite, we're all conditioned by having heard these type songs literally hundreds of times. Both of these "rock god" vocalists have amazing light mass voices with strangely uncommon intrinsic musculature!

Love Journey, but Mickey doesn't need to be doing this one. Throw on "Jane" or "Find Your Way Back". THAT is Mickey Thomas.
@brywool4 жыл бұрын
I wrote this a year ago. That being said... just imagine. After Steve Perry was fired, if there was no Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Soto, or Arnel Pineda. Imagine if Neal Schon had called Mickey. Mickey Thomas absolutely could've handled the gig and added his great Starship stuff (and no, I don't mean "Nothing's Gonna Stop us Now", I mean the heavier stuff.) Thomas is one of rock's best voices, ever.
@Supermonkey2213 жыл бұрын
For folks that think this was recorded 20 years ago and that Mickey couldn't hit these notes now....simply look up "Find Your Way Back" and "Jane" 2010 to see if Mick still has the chops. Ehh, nevermind ..I'll save you the time. He Does!! One of the best vocalists, EVER!
@brywool4 жыл бұрын
absolutely. And in 2019, he sings Jane and Find Your Way Back in the original keys with ALL of the notes. Mickey has absolutely not lost a thing in all these years. Perry, who is god to me, unfortunately, has lost a lot of range, but he still has so much f'ing FEEL.

This is really Mickey Thomas! Here's the info from AllMusic with their review of the album: Various Artists An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey Tribute albums are a tricky business. On one hand, if an artist interprets a familiar song in a fresh way he or she can be accused of ruining a classic. On the other, if an artist re-creates the familiar song note for note he or she can be accused of having no imagination. It's a no-win situation. Released in 2006, An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey features new recordings of 13 beloved songs from the peak of Journey's gigantic mainstream success with vocalist Steve Perry. The stars here are vocalists, but many of them are more in the '70s arena rock and AOR vein than '80s metal. However, this fact just proves how the lines separating genres can be blurred. The biggest names among the featured vocalists are Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship, Starship), Bobby Kimball (Toto), Kip Winger (Winger), Tommy Shaw (Styx, Damn Yankees), Jack Russell (Great White), Robin McAuley (MSG), Kelly Hansen (Hurricane, Foreigner), and John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Ratt). Musically speaking, the arrangements of virtually all of the songs are so close to the originals that it's scary. (There are crunchy, '80s-style rhythm guitar extras here and there.) Half of An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey was produced and performed -- with the exception of drums -- by former Yes member Billy Sherwood. He has previously produced AC/DC, Queen, and Pink Floyd tribute albums, among others. Ultimately, An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey lives or dies by the vocalists. Given Perry's distinctive style, the special guests had their work cut out for them. Sometimes a few of them strain to reach Perry's range, but they usually sound like themselves. Kimball tackles "Who's Crying Now," Winger handles "Send Her My Love" quite well, Shaw treats "Open Arms" respectfully, Russell cuts loose on "Any Way You Want It," and Hansen adds extra muscle to "Wheel in the Sky" and "Separate Ways." As for the less famous participants, Mark Knight of Worry Beads takes a slightly subdued yet interesting approach to "Only the Young," while Stevie Rachelle of Tuff offers a straightforward version of "Lights." Considering that Rachelle eventually came forward as the creator of the infamous, metal-mocking website Metal Sludge, shouldn't he rip himself for simply being a part of this album? An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey, despite the partially inaccurate title, should appeal to fans of Journey and the guest vocalists. Mickey sounds as good today as he did back in the seventies, which is to say that he sounds amazing. However, with that being said, Steve Perry is hands-down the greatest singer in the history of rock! Yes, there are many great ones like Mickey, Delp, Zander, Mercury, etc., but no one had the instrument and range that Perry did. Just listen to the end of Mother Father and tell me another singer who could have pulled that off.

There is a slight difference in pitch, MT is slightly higher and does not have a lower range quite like Steve Perry. I would say this Steve Perry, song background sounds like Journey also. Vocalist have distinct voices unique and personal. MT could easily fit into Journey but would not be same as SP.

@@christinealling272 Probably because Mickey was Perry's good friend and Mickey of course has his own song catalog but could have sang both with Journey- I don't think Mickey would have just toured either he would have to go into the studio and write some hit songs before a singer like Mickey would join a very popular band especially a singer of Mickey's caliber
