Hi Mick, a little advice from a old broken builder, work smart not hard. Winter comes early. Try to think out each project before starting. Don't cause permanent damage to your arm, use the chainsaw! Unless you are going to push it over with a backhoe cut it at ground level the first time. Raise the floor of your tent off the ground or all your stuff is going to be soggy. ( Build a platform). Pli don't think I am being critical I just want to see you succeed 😉

I’m a longtime follower of your father’s. I’ve learned a lot from him and he’s inspired me to buy land and build a cabin of my own. I didn’t realize you had an account til several days ago. I enjoy watching your videos because it reminds me of a younger version of myself, and how I would have done things. I’ve started from the very beginning and I’ve enjoyed your videos very much. On my research on buying land, that was one of the mains points…road access and right of way, water, mineral and timber rights. I had never heard of this, also unrestricted land in many states still have regulations 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️. Alaska was listed as the least restrictive.

Hi Mick! Look, you will be getting some criticism from keyboardists out there. I’m 70 y/o and I could hear you just fine. First rule of buying land, rights of ingress and egress, which you have already learned..Work with your neighbors to straighten out the road snafu and it will all work out. Where is your water source? Keep toiling, and be safe.

I was thinking that your neighbour did you a great favour by telling you no from the get go over using his road. If you had encountered a 'waffler' who said yes, but reluctantly, I guarantee that you would have been more annoyed down the road (sorry) when he changes his mind at a more inconvenient time for you. Despite the extra hard work, you will be glad for your own road. Good luck with everything! Cheering you on from Nova Scotia! (I have a grandson your age, so can relate! lol)

Do everything in your power to be a good neighbor, which means figuring out what they care about. But in the end, you don't really want to rely on someone else to have full access to your property. In the long run, this is probably a good result.

Exactly my thought. You never know when circumstances can change years down the line, maybe he sells it, maybe they get into a dispute - whatever. All of a sudden you can't use it. Better to build it now on a blank canvas than have to figure something out after he builds out the property

Congratulations on your new property! It is beautiful. So happy for you! You have a lot of work to do before winter. I like how you jumped right into it. I worked at a meat and grocery supply company back in the 1960s and the superintendent of the meat packing division (I was his secretary) gave me a beautiful horn from a cow. I cleaned it up and shaved it down with pieces of thick glass from a broken Coca Cola bottle. Took a long time but it turned out beautifully and sounded a lot like yours. I had forgotten about that. I gave it away years ago. Wish I still had it.

😂 I like the way you christened your new land with your bison horn horn! You'd save a lot of time getting the road cleared by investing in a power saw. You wouldn't need a big expensive one with those small trees. In fact, you could probably buy a battery-powered one that could be charged from a combination solar-powered/wind powered power box. Now that would cost a lot more, but would be eco-friendly and handy for so many applications. And the setup would save you so much in fuel costs in the long run. Good luck in making this beautiful spot your home! 🙂

Suggestion for you, I live in a tent on my homestead for the moment and I ended up putting a frame around the tent and covering the tent with tarps, it will help to keep your setup a LOT cleaner, and drier. It also keeps the sun off the tent, because the sun will destroy most tents and tarps within months, and there's very few things worse than having to replace something that you don't intend to be permanent.

Get an Echo brushcutter and blade that has the chainsaw teeth from Echo! I've used one on the Shindaiwa for years and it is better and easier than a chainsaw in most applications, unless you are cutting something pretty large in diameter. They used to make a blade called the Tornado blade, but sadly it is gone. The new blades have the chainsaw teeth machined into the blade rather than riveted on years ago. You can take down trees within seconds with that blade up to 4 inches in diameter! Anything less than 2 inches you can just swing it like a golf club and it will go right through the tree with no effort! You can take down hundreds of the smaller ones in an hour, and dozens of the medium ones per hour! It takes much longer to haul away the fallen trees than it does to cut them, it goes so fast!! Of course one of the biggest advantages to using the brushcutter is that you can chop off the trees closer to the ground and not have to revisit them! Of course the dirt will dull the blade, but when a friend of mine and I were clearing trails, he got a carbide blade rigged up for me on the brushcutter and I just went below the dirt and cut the tree off below the surface! Those type of blades kick pretty bad though, but not the one with the chainsaw teeth!

Takes me back to when I had to clear my driveway to get my car on my little parcel. Every time I came out I was able to get further into the land. I cut all the trees close to the ground and just drove over and built over, and gardened around the low stumps. Then I finally rented a stump grinder and took them all below dirt at once. That was a great day. I'm pretty excited in the future to see you go three dimensional on your cabin and enclose it with a roof. I'll never forget the feeling of actually being enclosed in my own building for the first time, and the best part was that it started to rain right away, which made it that much more satisfying. If you set up a little table off the ground to cook on and a good way to sit and eat with a side table of some sort, that will be a game changer for your meals. Those little things are so big when you start by sitting and cooking on the ground. Two more recommendations, even though you didn't ask: You''re going to be clearing a lot of trees and building up some huge brush piles. Figure out the final place you want all the logs and branches, and take the extra time to pile them in the final location. I've had to move my logs and branch piles a couple times, and I really wish I'd planned better and took the extra effort the first and only time. Also, be sure to cut down all the trees you need to fell BEFORE you build any structures and even your garden fences, etc. I've lost fencing and even fruit trees, because I was too impatient to really clear the land first. Best of luck, you're living the best life.

I started with 2 acres of bush 32 years ago in 1991 and built my humble house with my wife and help from my brother on the drywall and cabinets . There are few bears here to be a problem. A lot more in Alaska . I would recommend that you try to find some logs to build so protection into your dwelling and that you acquire some heavy artillery (rifle or shotgun) for bear deterrance. Have a good day. Winter will be here all too soon. Tom in the Maritimes at the NB-NS border

You are doing great! Keep up the good work. Create an in ground refrigerator to keep the food cool. Create a picnic table to eat at and cook on. Look into a hand pump water well, if the water table is not too deep. Find a place or make a place to park your car where it will not get stuck in mud or covered too much in snow. It will not make it far in deep snow.

Yayy Mick, officially settled! Yous weren’t kidding about the huge skeeters in Alaska, pretty sure one blocked out a whole frame, lol. Sorry to hear about the not so friendly neighbour, hopefully they’ll come around. Maybe keep the war cry at the OTHER end of their property…? 🤷‍♀️🤣 Cheers from Eastern Canada.

When you cut the trees 3 feet from the ground you have to do it twice. Hey you are young and fit. You will learn as you go we all have done it that way. Good luck with your new home! 💙

Hey there! I grew up in the Fairbanks area, and we are coming to visit next week! In case someone hasn’t mentioned it: cook bacon first, then eggs, then toast, using the bacon grease to cook them in. 👍🏼 My kiddos are enjoying your videos! What you said in the first one about public school made them more thankful to be homeschoolers haha

Very cool shofar! And I liked how you used your turn signal at the beginning of the video, even though no one was around haha (my kids do that too). Glad you have Daniel out there, being so far from your prior home, it must be great to at least have some companionship out there in the boonies, not knowing anyone.

It is great that you still use turn signals to make a right turn when the nearest car is about 27 miles away! Automatic , you learned well.

Glad to see you made it to your property. I had trouble hearing what you were saying sometimes because of the wind noise. You might get a wind sock for your microphone. All those trees you cut down should be cut up into fire wood not just thrown into a pile. There's some that are pretty straight that would make great poles for many uses. Good luck with the next phase and keep'em coming.

I bet Alaska mosquitoes, also known as their joking “state bird”, won’t slow the bugs down too much. They’re ferocious from what I hear.

@@andreaclark9398 yes, I have heard of Alaska mosquitoes! I live in the low country of Georgia on a barrier island or called "the swamp" we have gators, copperheads, cottonmouths, rattle snakes and mosquitoes. organic lavender oil nontoxic has worked the best for me.

Nice spot surrounded by nature and relative privacy by the looks Loved the buffalo horn, it came up nicely. I've made many "roaring" horns for deer hunting, out of big cows horns, in a similar way, minus the flute attachment thing, because you just roar into them to sound like a randy stag .... they were quick and easy to make using fine grit sandpaper disc on the angle grinder to smooth them up Bacon and eggs in a camp looked just the ideal way to recharge the energy levels
