Watch it in slo mo. He flicks through the board instead of flicking sideways. The board is almost at 90 degrees and his foot is still in contact with it. If you look at the motion of his foot, its actually going towards the board and not away from it because by the time he's ready to flick the board is already sideways. You'll notice it more on the nollie flips.

Exactly. Flick straight off the tail pretty much. Flicking off the side too much is less effective because, especially at high speeds, less friction mean less control. Flick a chuck off that thing instead of just the side and your flips will be quicker and more controlled. (this applies to all flip tricks) Also focus on the flick more than the pop and center your wait slightly more over the flicking side. This is so the pop side catches better and the flick side doesn't rocket.

It's all in the ankle flick. People use their legs too much on kickflips when it's all in your ankles. It eliminates any necessary leg motion and makes your kickflips flip WAY faster.
