In this video, we modify a JT1 Morse Taper arbour to fit a micro chuck for use on the mill. . We also make an adaptor for the tailstock die holder to be used to hold the micro chuck as a sensitive drilling device on the lathe.

Another possible source of "tailstock" error could be from the chuck itself. Put a gage pin into the small chuck and the other end in your main chuck and a dti on the parallel shank and see what the runout is. West German chucks are usually top quality, but this one could be a post bierfest example.

The drill below centre won’t be a problem it’s just the clearance being taken up on the sliding parts, once it’s found the centre it will stay there. You see this often. Nice Chuck you have and it’ll be put to good use.
@jonsworkshop
@jonsworkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, thanks for the comment, yes, for shallow holes I think it will be OK as you say, but I think any deep holes may end up breaking drills (not sure). I may make another cartridge to hold the chuck back end, but make it in the 4 Jaw and deliberately throw the centre hole eccentric by about 0.04". This way I can rotate to find true centre, mark it up then mill the clamp slot (this should work). Cheers, Jon

Jon, I'm glad YOU spotted the below center problem, saves me telling you. LOL I think that you bent the 1 mm drill in the lathe as it had to cut upwards. Regards from Australia.
@jonsworkshop
@jonsworkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thanks for the comment. It's true what they say, the camera never lies! I honestly didn't spot this during machining but the video is very clear. Already have a solution in my head (another cartridge but done in the 4 Jaw with the bore about 0.04" eccentric) should only take 30 mins to make and will allow me to adjust to be bang on centre. Cheers, Jon

You may have wanted to leave a small shoulder on that arbor so that you can more easily remove the chuck from it with wedges down the road. I'd also mention that (although hard to find and not cheap) "Globe" Japan makes a J1-10mm precision straight shaft arbor. I just got one for a similar Albrecht chuck for my mini-mill.
@jonsworkshop

Hi Jason, thanks for the comment. Good point. I think there is just about enough gap still for some thin wedges. Will check Globe out, thanks. Cheers, Jon
