University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign researchers developed a new system that uses microbubbles to propel tiny particles through the surface of these tough biofilms to break the films apart and deliver an antiseptic deathblow to the microbes living inside. This video shows the deformation of an E. coli-containing biofilm by microbubbles produced from manganese oxide-doped diatoms reacting with hydrogen peroxide within a 50 micron-wide confined space.
