In this video, Keith Barker covers how end users can leverage default gateways on a customer network in a few different ways. These are used to get off the local area networks by utilizing several different mechanisms, one being hot standby routing protocol (HSRP).
A lot of behind the scenes work happens to ensure that you can always get off local area networks when you access the internet. These are known as default gateways, and this video briefly covers three: hot standby routing protocol, gateway load balancing protocol, and common address resolution protocol.
All three of these provide a key concept in the process known as “fault tolerance.” Keith walks through several diagrams to illustrate how these processes work as they interact between the routers, VLAN, IP addresses, and the network at large. Additionally, the video will show a live demonstration of these concepts in action.

VRRP would definitely be in the same FHRP (First Hop Redundancy Protocol) family, along with Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP). Thanks for the question, Keith.

Hello Nadim- Great question. Yes there can be multiple HSRP groups. With every one set to preempt, the router with the highest priority will be active for that VLAN. You would use trunking (on a physical router) to provide it with logical connections to all the VLANs needed, through a single physical interface. R3 could be high priority for VLANs 2, 4, 6 and R4 could be high priority for VLANs 3, 5, 7. They would then back each other up as standby.

Hi Mike! Most Cisco routers (running the appropriate IOS that supports the feature) can be configured for HSRP. HSRP works equally well on routers as on multilayer switches. Thanks, Keith

This is a great video, I did struggle to first get to grips with HSRP and why we would use it, how it would work etc. But after watching this video I feel I have more understanding now of this concept. Thanks!

Keith what router are you using in this video which supports HSRP? i thought they only ran on multi layer switches? if i were practicing HSRP for the ccnp exam would using routers suffice over multi layer switches?

April 2024 and I'm reading the CCNA book--- this topic came up. Worked in Networking with Cisco equipment for a year now--- never heard of it.
