During the cold season there are fewer microorganisms in ponds. But you still can observe them! Here I show you a simple thing that you have to do. I also explain the importance of a right temperature for reproduction of microbes.

Here in Chicago, everything turns into ice end of October. It is always a pain to find a nice pond that not frozen. I am going to try sampling again in April. It is nice to know that it is still possible to find microbes in the winter season. Thank you for the videos.

I had great results finding and filming pond microorganisms in the Summer but I was put off looking for samples owing to the cold conditions, but your video has given me a new enthusiasm to get out and collect some pond samples, thank you.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I just got a new scope and we’ve been getting samples from our pond in Ohio. I was amazed there were microbes living under the ice....thanks for explaining the science behind it.

3:27 A friend of mine got contaminated by parasitic worm from water contaminated by Canadian goose dropping. The worm quickly (within 5 minutes) went under my friend's skin. At that moment, it was invisible. But the next day, he got red trace growing 1 inch per day and it was fkn itchy. Doctor said there was nothing to do and wait until they simply die under the skin and be decomposed by white blood cells. Worms start at knee level and died at the groin area (yes, just before the private parts). 4 months latter, he got the same infection in the same stale water!!! I would be very curious to see the microscopic life in theses bird dropping.

Have been looking for microbes since last week, when I got my microscope, but have only seen a few of them, but I will try your tip to let a sample grow a few days at room temperature. Did you add some fertilizer while doing this? Today I also found a little bit of wood with moss lying in the forest, took it home and in every sample I saw some tardigrades. They do not seem to mind the low temperatures that much.

First! Anyways finding microbes in cold water is difficult! My year old water is already too cold.. (year old tap water which has a lot of microbes during better season). I have collected some my garden lake water and is staying five days I think. But i don't have enough time to observe something under microscope right now. Seems like everything in my year old tap water is hibernating. Thanks for some advices.

Do you use any kind of glycerin or gel to slow them down? I find it very hard to keep small ciliates like the ones in 6:15 in view for long enough to observe. But I've also heard that glycerin will change how some ciliates appear.
@Microbehunter
@Microbehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Not using glycerine. Not tried it yet either. Too much glycerine will withdraw water from them. There is something called Protoslo, which can be used.

I thought My microscope had multiple lenses because they were large but then I opened it and I was disappointed but the quality of the image was great so I thought maybe that it was made out of glass because I had a toy microscope and the quality wasn't so great and it had lenses but they looked and felt like plastic please can you tell why the quality of my microscope is good even though it has one lense.

does staining damage or kill bacteria?
@Microbehunter

Generally yes as the stain bonds to the cells and its components.

"you can not have life forming out of non living material", around 7 min. I am sure that this is incorrect Oliver. You can deduce that by the fact that 1) life on earth, 2) earth was moten lava not long ago, 3) the super nova which created the dust that made our planet and sun was both very hot and very large. Yes?
@Microbehunter
@Microbehunter 3 жыл бұрын
First life came of course from non-living material, so I agree with your point. But Spontaneous Generation, as it is called, has not been observed since then. What I meant to say is that the organisms observed in the water sample must have been present already, but in a dormant state and/or at low concentrations. They don't just form by themselves.

@@Microbehunter and that my friend is a great topic. How can we begin to find the egg or larvae stages of all (or some of) our favorite microbes? Where are all these microbes hiding? In your case, were the microbes all in egg form? Or more like spore form?

No it will not. Viruses are pretty resistant to cold temperatures, as they are very simple.

Think in God terms. He or she was 9ne then doubled..but before one was half of two. We been through this excerpt of info. So when a third is answerable by weakened terms its twice as accessible . so builds are important.
