Thanks Sam, I've been doing music for 5 years, but I've been looking for ways to make my recordings, i never knew what those polar patterns mean, but now I do, I can get mics specifically for what i want to use them for, other than just recording (for recording sake), very insightful and informative tutorial.

I found this helpful, authoritative and really well-constructed. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your expertise. It never ceases to surprise me how many AV people shy away from the ost (on-screen talent) slot - perpetuates the myth of video being stressful and scary... The superimposed polar diagrams were tremendously effective - and I am recommending your post for others to learn from. Great Work !

This sure is helpful! I sometimes use this video in class. With the omni mic the comparison front -back seems somewhat unfair because you almost double the distance from the membrane to your mouth when turning it, try to keep the membrane in place and it will be a less dramatic change making the whole point you want to make even stronger. Thanks for this video!

GJOstudio Noticed the same. not to change the focal point

GJOstudio Yeah, good point! Thanks for the feedback.

Just a small critique of the omni pattern demonstration - the mic capsule was about 10" further from your mouth when it was facing away from you, which would account for a large reduction of level.

WoW. i was wondering how to explain some people of applications of polar curves like Cardioid and Nephroid. both are available in this video. well demonstrated too. thanks a bunch.

Nice video, thanks. I was having trouble visualizing the polar pattern from the 2D sheets that came with my mike, especially where the axis was. Your video cleared it up for me.

A very informative, enjoyable video. Your detailing is easy to understand, and being new to recording, I absorbed some good info. Thanks, sir.

They are very similar. Hyper-cardioids are more directional - pick up less from the sides. They both have a small amount of pickup from the rear, unlike a cardioid.

Tim - shotgun mic are supercardioid pattern mics and I regrettably don't have one laying around to show , so I didn't mention them. I wouldn't mind having one for shooting video!

Fantastic explanationv.. Bro... But what makes a microphone its polar patterns... What technology defined a microphone's polar patterns ....can you explain it... Thanks
@audiopropellor3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback - I’m not sure how these patterns are created. Assuming a combination of physical design and electronics. I’m sure Google has answers….

07:37 I've always wondered why they put the lobe in the back in the super cardioid; it just doesn't make sense.
@vsm14565 жыл бұрын
they don't really "put" it there. it just happens to be there because of how this polar pattern works. you can't just "turn it off"...

so the '0degree' is at the front of the mic? and 180 is the back?

whats the point of supercardioid? why would u want pickup from the rear?
@audiopropellor7 жыл бұрын
Supercardiod rejects from the rear and is 'super directional'. If you want more room sound or to record multiple instruments with one mic, you would want more pickup from the rear
