Good little FM transmitter that, I was surprised by the range it had, I've done a bit of experimenting with FM myself using one of those FM transmitters you can buy that you use in the car, I took it apart and soldered a 1meter length of wire to the antenna terminal, that increased the range from a couple of meters to between 30 & 40 Meters, it's interesting to discover how far an FM signal down in the milliwatts will go.

Good one Peter. Reminds me of the AM transmitter I built back in late 60's out on the farm. Great days of experimenting with radio. I am 72 now are still enjoying the hobby. Cheers Peter Kevin VK2KTG

I have all those FM bug magazine's from Talking Electronics. The one that had the "ant bug" came with the board taped to the cover. I etched my own boards for a couple of them. Including the vox bug. This one had an IC for the vox part of the circuit. In listening mode it drew a miniscule amount of power. The slightest sound and it would transmit what it was hearing. A few seconds of silence and it would drop back into listening mode. One of the Dick Smith magazine's had a one transistor FM transmitter like the one at the beginning of video. It was nine volts and worked quite well. I still have it. It's amazing the clarity you can get with FM, and with so few parts.

Those books and projects have brought back a lot of memories for me. I made most of those projects and I don't recollect any of them not working for me either. I'm loving all these sorts of videos of yours. Just great stuff and a joy to remember.

I was wondering if you were going to talk about peaking that power output stage. The six turn coil off the collector of the final transistor. In one of the article's for one that had that stage with that more powerful transistor. They talked about the importance of peaking it for increasing the distance. This involved adjusting that coil as you did. From memory, they had come up with a way of using an anolog multimeter to measure the output while adjusting the coil. At the time I was keen for maximum distance. I slid a very thin bit of ferrite into that coil. Part way in the radio on the other side of the room absolutely squealed because of the increase in power. I then had something playing into the microphone while I tested it for distance. Hard to remember now, but I was easily hearing it a kilometre away and more, depending on where I was.

I have every copy of the funway books written by VK2DIK in book 2 Dick describes a similar project. I also played around with the radio shack / tandy Science Fair 200 in 1 kit in which there was a circuit for an am transmitter . Altronics now sell the former radio shack kit which is now called Maxitronic 200 in 1 Electronic Lab.

I did something similar but used a tapped RFC like you did on the beacon. It goes about 20m which falls under part 15.

👍Thanks Peter. Making this for 4m band is a good suggestion. Would be nice to homebrew a 4m FM receiver to go with it. I wonder if a normal domestic VHF receiver with a 30MHz LO could be used to down convert to around 70.45MHz.

Breakthrough from broadcasters is a likely problem unless shielding is excellent. You may be better off getting an old receiver and fiddling with the local oscillator to get it down to either 81 or 60 MHz. Former is easier but presents risk of image reception of FM broadcasters near 92 MHz.

they guys are how i started pirate radio in qld....i think it was the ultima it was modified to accept audio and was amplified with a two way amp which got it to about just under 1 watt....Then was amplfied again with a tait vhf two way rack mounted amp that was 50 watts output but ran all day everyday on 25 watt ...you couldnt walk near it lol but it worked very well took it up mt gravatt mountain heaps of times

nice to see! here in NL there are still amateurs active on that WFM band.(84 to 86MHz) I would put a choke between the oscillator and stage. a resistor 1/4W 100K carbon with 10WDG of 0.2MM copper enamel wire and one more step stage it! . forget to say that if you stretch one/the coil then maybe look better for a coil with fewer turns! so that final filter is definitely not good yet!

Really good basics for me to learn, thanks Peter! I'm guessing it would be possible to tweak the frequency to amateur bands, say 2 metres or 4 metres which is around 70.450 here in the UK. Do you have 4 metres in Australia?

We don't have an official 4m amateur band. But we can use low power transmitters on various VHF & UHF frequencies under an LIPD class licence. Some of those frequencies coincides with the UK 4m band including the WSPR frequency. Frequency stability is the main problem as you'd want to do narrow band FM only.
