Humans have long known that glass bends light. However, it took us awhile to figure out that stacking lenses in a tube would open up a whole new world to science, finally allowing us a peek at the microscopic.

Daniel Popov As John Green says, reality resists simplification. All those lives that were saved with the microscope, antibiotics, and everything else would not have been saved if it were not for all those things, and the hard work of the people who developed them and used them.
@mathieudumoulin8273
@mathieudumoulin8273 10 жыл бұрын
Lorenzo Benito Daniel Popov I disagree with Lorenzo, Antibiotics saved many more people than the microscope... Obviously, if you go and follow the chain of events, you could techically say that the dinosaur ice age meteorite saved many lives because without it, the chain of events as we know it wouldn't have happened, thus human wouldn't have live, agriculture too, writting would have never been developped, and so on. The butterfly effect/chaos theory/chain of events can't apply to what or who saved more lives than another in this context. Microscopes have a great "importance" (and i guess this is the better wording) in saving lives but did not save lives except maybe for a few mad scientists that may have crushed an unfortunate life less zombie skull in an experience gone awfully wrong :P

I'm amused whenever a native English speaker tries to pronounce a foreign name/word. Some get it right with Spanish, French, German or other major languages, but most pretty much butcher the word with any language. Sometimes it's painful to the ears.

I would be interested in an episode surrounding anosmia (the lack of a sense of smell). It's a disability of which few people are aware, and there are many misconceptions about it, such as that anosmics are unable to taste.

Well smell has a lot to do with the experience of flavor, so it does impair taste to a certain extent. Can you taste your food when you have a stuffy nose the same way you taste it otherwise? I can't.

Re i'm immune to all known human viruses.
@DrWh1teCat
@DrWh1teCat 10 жыл бұрын
Re You're equating taste and flavor, when they are really not the same thing. Taste is just what your taste buds sense and send along CN VII, IX, and X. That is not affected at all by your sense of smell. Flavor is the combined information of scent, taste, thermal, tactile, and nociceptive receptors. Loss of any of those senses alters the overall effect,but doesn't diminish any of the other constituents. I'm congenitally anosmic, so having a stuffy nose does not affect the flavor of food at all for me. And stuffy nose doesn't affect the taste for anyone because the tastebuds and the corresponding nerves are not affected. If that stuffy nose was an infection that spread through the sinuses to infect CN VII, IX, or X, then yes,taste would be affected.

True story; when I was a kid of about 10, I stole a microscope from school so I could look at the life from the local frog pond. My first foray into art, I would draw unknown little critters and then search the science category in the school library for bugs and identify them. The things people do to learn, eh?

@ErzengelDesLichtes
@ErzengelDesLichtes 10 жыл бұрын
Telescopes came first, and were named such in the 1610s. Microscopes came later, and were named in the 1650s. So unless the inventors of microscopes also invented a time machine, it was too late to get the "synchronicity" you want, unless you can come up with a nice inversion of "tele-".

0:31 actually, there is no cure for polio. There are however means of prevention, which is probably to what you're referring. Speaking of lenses, just a few hours ago me and my friends had a discussion about prescription lenses... Two of my friends work in two diferent vision care businesses, and they're going through different trainings... the question was "using wrong prescription lenses can cause any kind of physical damage to the eye?" They had oposites opinions about it. Besides the headaches (which they both agreed was a consequence) can eyes be directly afected by using wrong prescription glasses? I'm just a fan on science, and fan of the show, and I thought it was an interesting question, i have my opinion, but maybe you guys can go deeper and give us some clarity :) Thanks
