Microsoft 365 UPN Change - What happens on the desktop?
In a migration sense there are times when a users UPN (User Principal Name) may need to be changed. Often at the end of an initial migration pass the domain name is then brought over from source tenant. It can be applied to the target tenant and the users that have come over get updated to a different UPN.
Sometimes there may just be some core branding changes, or plenty of other reasons why a UPN can change.
In this video I go through what happens to these items on an Azure AD Joined PC.
Base User Profile
Microsoft 365 applications - Subscription UPN changes
Teams Profile
OneDrive connection
Outlook Profile
I take a real world PC, change the UPN, then show everything that either occurs automatically, or requires user attention.
Overall I hope this is useful in showing all the steps that would need to happen during a change like this.

Yeah. I would skip the email profile But I’d remove the old profile first if I went this route. That way with no profile I get auto sign in via the “first run experience” in outlook.

Hi! This is something I’m doing for 800+ users in a couple of weeks so great to get this tested. We do have users that have synced SharePoint libraries as well in file explorer via the OneDrive sync engine. I don’t suppose those connections work as simple as the OneDrive sync does. I guess they have to be set up again after unlinking the pc…

Yes. That is what I have seen happen. On one setup though they did all get retained which I thought was cool but unexpected. What it means though is that proper testing on your particular environment is very important. At least then you can tell the users exactly what they should be expecting. Let us know how it turns out, would be good to have another viewpoint.
