Microsoft are closing down the Xbox 360 Marketplace on July 29, 2024, download now before it's gone!

Early in the year Nintendo pulled the plug on the Wii U and 3DS, now Microsoft have just announced they are doing the same with the Xbox 360 Marketplace. So now really is the last chance saloon to grab any games or DLC you are after before Phil Spencer bumps off the Xbox 360 for good and all digital games and their DLC join the digital dark age.
Our editor takes an in depth look at this news with the official press release to customers of the Xbox 360. Looking at some of the already delisted games on the service, free DLC and compatibility packs that you need to download before the shutdown. Along with games that are having the online shutdown or have had major chucks of the game already shutdown. Too many people only care about convenience nowadays with EVERYTHING. From gaming, music, movies / TV, dating, shopping, you name it. Physical media in any form now has premium or will have premium prices since it's mostly old content or limited releases.

In 20 years times when people can't play the games they bought when they were younger there may well be a backlash, but by them it will be to late. As it stands even many modern retails releases are early code builds or don't even have the full game on the disc. All it will do is drive more people to pirate content.

Something feels wrong about delisting all these games and DLCs. I understand it costs money to operate these digital stores, but to make it impossible for future people to enjoy DLC forever is ridiculous. I feel like everything on a digital marketplace should be made free several months before the shop is closed. Should also have a way for third-party or dedicated fans to keep these things running. I hate the digital always online trend we are currently in. Games like Forza Motorsport 2023 for example. I hate the idea that all the time and effort I could put into a game will basically be completely lost 10 years from now, or whenever Microsoft decides to stop supporting the game. Always on line digital only games are such a scam, I wished more gamers realized this. This is why I bought an Xbox360 and started rebuilding my physical collection. I want to be able to play my games offline 10-20 years from now. I want my kids to experience games like Halo the way I did, not some bland remaster that tweaks the art style and feel of the game. I want to play games like Forza Motorsport 4 10 years from now. Fortunately, Xbox360 games are dirt cheap, stock up while you can, I see in th future Xbox360 games becoming more sought after.

Unfortunately it seems that most Microsoft fans don’t care about losing the X360 Marketplace. Sony tried to close the PS Store for PS3 and Vita a few years ago, resulting in many fans complaining and Sony listened and put a stop to it and it’s still supported in 2024. I really wish the same happens to the X360 store!

Something nobody seems to cover is that buying Xbox 360 compatible games on the Xbox One/new Store does not always mean those games will then be playable on your Xbox 360. Ninja Gaiden Black for example, if you buy that on Xbox One, you won't own it on Xbox 360 (you still have the option to buy it there as well).

Yeah, that one to contact Microsoft Xbox support over. Riven purchased Jade Empire on Xbox One and that happened, it's main with the Xbox original games. It was on sale for £3.03 on the one, but not on Xbox 360. So suspect that broken the link between them in the stores.

With Xbox originals it seems best to buy them on Xbox 360 rather than Xbox One, but this shouldn't be happening and Microsoft have messed up somewhere. We will cover this issue in the next video we do on the Xbox store, as the store is getting a bit hit and miss to use on Xbox 360

Actually no; I will not buy any of these games. I'm no longer gonna support any digital services that have DRM and are anti-consumer because they're not made available on later Microsoft consoles via backwards compatibility.

That is fair, although to Microsoft it mostly just sends the message nobody actually cares if we delist stuff and it also means the indie devs are kinda caught in the crossfire. I'd personally more recommend buying a few of the indie digitals or absolute favourites, but none of the bigger titles or their DLC. Especially if you're planning on sailing the high seas anyway 🏴‍☠. That way even if it's only $5 it sends the message that there is value in keeping games and digital stores alive. Definitely if a game is available in a better format (physical or DRM-Free) buy there instead as that's by far the best option. Also send emails petitions, fill out surveys, and spread the idea of what you're doing and why.

No you seems to have misread our post, cache patches that run on starting a game should still work and download we understand, after the shutdown as they aren't linked to the store. The 360 itself can only hold around 10 cache patches in memory, some patches will download and save to the hard drive. But a few like the Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut DLC have to be download in the shop, detailed at 30:12

There's no way to tell, which is truly the rarest digital game as we don't have sales figures for them, but we could do something on some of the most sort after digital games and the ones that got delisted really quickly like Kung Fu Strike: The Warrior's Rise (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJqZl3yebtyenc0) Yaris was a really early delisting, but that was a free game so you can burn it to a CD and play it still even if you didn't download it. OutRun Arcade Online (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZzcZmWPd5aLY8U) and other games that have been delisted for over a decade. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ66aoNnpZibnpY) and the other turtles games will be ones that are going to be wanted for sure.

I believe they should give out every single game that's playable on Xbox 360 before they shut it down in any possible way. I doubt that they will push the date in order to accomplish this, but I find if they're going to shut it down; that's what they should do so when it's gone, we will still be able to access the games that we truly want to play. To be honest, I truly just wanna play Army of Two: 40th day and Full Auto. Edit: Vigilante 8 is practically a wet dream for me.

Don’t support digital media. Who knows when they will cancel your ability to redownload purchases….put your hard earned money into physical games only. Simple as that. Then you will always be able to play whenever you want regardless of what Microsoft or any game company decides to do.

The trouble is physical media is being allowed to die out at present and some disc games are little more than a download on disc. Many games aren't available on disc now as where, but you are correct, the real battleground going forward is digital consumer rights and we need to start fighting for the rights to say, that major companies always have to support your digital download, regardless of age. A major boycott of digital games could help force this, but that would be tough to organise and many might not stick to it. Ideally all game should get both a digital and physical release and we should have an on demand print system for games now.

We would suggest you buy on your main account, but as a heads up the more games you own the slower the 360 dashboard becomes. These days our editors account takes like 5 minutes to load into the dash on 360. Part of the problem is the many games that save to the profile not to the hard drive storage his account is like 100+ MB on 360 as a result.

So we are about to cover this topic in the next few days, any patch that download on starting a game are still staying up as we understand it. Where the issue is with games where the patches were to big to use that method and were instead listed in the store. This only applies to a few games like Mass Effect 3 new endings and the Test Drive 2 Unlimited

Yeah Armored Core Verdict Day is great, the single play campaign was great fun and the multiplayer is even better. We've been buying some of the last few DLCs we wanted and Riven grabbed the 2012 version of Karateka on PlayStation 3 the other day as that was another game delisted on Xbox 360, but still available on PlayStation 3 to buy. Will be looking at more of the 360 digital games in the near future.

That is the best way to make multiple backups, you should be able to download the game from the Xbox 360 in your download queue for years to come, but even that service will be killed off at some point.

Yes, the redownload and history feature will still work according to Microsoft, you just won't be able to buy new content, but watch out for games with season passes some require you down the content in-game, before your account can see it, you'll likely have to download it in-game.

Yes for now at least, however some original Xbox game don't if you buy the digital version on Xbox One. This is supposed to still work after the store close according to Microsoft, but to be honest, it's not really clear at all if that feature will still add games to the 360 after it closes. We can confirm we had that issue with Jade Empire. Someone else also confirmed Ninja Gaiden Black to us as well. Worth nothing that both Armed and Dangerous and Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb got delisted as well from digital sale. The latter many people also reported issues with.

The price of modern consoles isn't cheap these days and with many people struggling to pay their monthly bills. The last thing on their shopping list is a new console. Many gamers do stick with older platforms, older family members tend to hand down their older consoles to younger ones as well. We still pick up a few titles a year on the system as well.

Personally, I collect physical games where applicable, on console all the time, and PC when I can for this reason, among others. I acquired Outrun 2 a year ago for £8 from CeX, the day it was discontinued from digital stores due to licensing issues, and ripped it to my PC's SSD for preservation's sake. Makes me sad knowing that if the big western movement for all-digital media comes to fruition, we'll lose the option and thus, so many games and movies will be lost to time.

Should add in regards to that incredibly anti-consumer patch on 3DS, that Sony did the same thing with the PS3. The "C Bomb" issue that stopped PS4's playing all manner of games, still affects the PS3 digital libraries, and they released an update to patch out workarounds, but not fix the issue. It's something that tells me to always buy physical on these systems especially, and that if I do buy digital, to do so on the PC counterpart so that I can patch them with a no-DRM patch and burn them to a disc for preservation and collection sake.

Yes the corporations are very keen on on that all digital push and many people seen blind to all the negative factors that will bring. Disney used a number of their streaming shows as a tax right off and then removed them, as they were a tax right down they can't be used again. So our main PS3 has had the battery go on it and we haven't got around to replacing it yet. PS5 also had the same issue, but the backlash force Sony to address it on PS5 &4, like you say they still haven't address it on PS3. Didn't realise they did the same thing as the 3DS with one of their patches, more people need to be made aware of that, we have discussed the battery issue in the PS3 before, but need to cover it again.

That's not always an option, no emulators aren't truly 100% perfect at this point. Having researched the recent state of PlayStation 3 archiving it appears a number of titles, patches and DLC's aren't archived at all and no dump exists. In the case of the Amiga many of the dumps of games are incorrect and the quality of dumps is suspect, often hacked versions of the game where dump and these often have content removed or files edited. Microsoft could also use DMCA's to removed sites hosting their games if they wanted to at any point. Just look at how Nintendo have cracked down on many sites people have uploaded their content to. Until a proper gaming archive exists backed by law nothing is safe from the digital dark age, even emulation itself.

Hi, sorry your post isn't ver clear what you are asking about, so we aren't sure what you are after, seems to be something about Pinball FX. So the original 2007 Pinball FX has been delisted for years now on Xbox 360, Pinball FX2 is still on Xbox 360, but a few tables have since been delisted like the Rocky & Bullwinkle Table one. Hope that answers your question.

It's going to be a sad day for many when it closes as it means the end of the Xbox 360 as it's been around since 2005, making it a retro console as neither new games or hardware can be purchased for it.

Have had zero issues with gears tactics. This store has been open for 18yrs that is more than enough time to have bought every game and dlc you could want. There's no need to keep dumping money into an 18yr old service and servers. I don't mean to b an ass but at some point things have to close especially when more money is going in than what there getting back

This is an interesting comment, one that got held by the KZbin filters, but it does shows the short-sightedness of many people about this shutdown. First off are you a multimillionaire able to buy ever single game you've ever wanted? Because most people aren't and can't buy every game and DLC they want, as we all have personal lives and bills to pay. If I still want to buy a classic film like Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937 which is over 80 years old now I can do. This is should be the case with games, but isn't and likely much of the digital content will be lost to time in due course, unless a major gaming archive is set up. Microsoft could close down the store in it's current form and set up say a low cost online web only version or move all games to Xbox One and Series X, but didn't. It does seem more likely based on the current rumours they are slowly going to move away from the console business.

Everything will be delisted on Xbox 360, but most of those games are supported on Xbox One.
