Hey Everyone! Just to offer some clarification on SteamVR because it keeps coming up, the need to use SteamVR is going to be determined by the headset you have, NOT where you purchased it from. For example, I purchased MSFS from the Microsoft Store. However, since I have the Pimax headset, I have to use the SteamVR application as the VR render agent between Microsoft and Pimax. I hope that makes sense and offers a bit more understanding. HP Reverb I believe uses Windows Mixed Reality Oculus will use Oculus Home

@spectrasouth 3 жыл бұрын
An excellent video and thanks for that clarification as I was about to ask that question. I have a Reverb G2 so use only WMR. You advise to upgrade to the latest Nvidia driver while others report better performance when they revert to an earlier version, such as 446.14. I'm interest in your opinion on that.

Wanna hear something even better? When I first installed Microsoft Flight Simulator (Gamepass Version) around launch, I couldn't play it because it kept telling me to "Insert the original game disc". I searched online and found thousands and thousands of people with the same problem. What was the official [Microsoft owned] developer response?? Turn off ALL windows security! The firewall, the live security, Windows Defender.... all of it! It's been 8 months now, and I STILL can't turn on *any* windows security features or I can't play this game made by a Microsoft studio. Unbelievable.

You sir are my hero ! I am a simracing guy who literally watched every vr optimisation video about the various racing titles, but nobody mentioned the gpu acceleration feature. I stumbled across your video because I got the flight simulator today, after flying around a little, I started my racing sim in VR (Automobilista2) and saw a massive performance boost ! Great video. Thanks for doing it. I think people should also remember that the sim is still in its early days of VR and Asobo will optimise things further over the coming months, hopefully. I also think the new RTX 3000 series cards aren't well optimised for VR yet either. I've got a RTX 3080 and I can't for the life of me get rid of a very slight stutter when I'm flying. I'm using a Quest 2 headset. There's so many variables with the sim that need to come together in exactly the right way for optimal performance.

My 2 cents to my fellow gamers: * Updating the video card driver will not necessary increase performance and I am always hesitant to do it. I have seen benchmarks results decrease with a newer graphics driver. I always look at the driver notes. If it doesn't mention specific performance improvements (in general or to a game I am interested in) I don't upgrade. * Another tweak to enhance system performance: Control Panel -> Power Options -> Select the High Performance or Ultimate Performance plan

I've been though all this myself. Got mine working great, though I have a great PC there's still adjusting needed. I'd add, for those using an oculus, set your oculus software to allow beta's and let it get the most recent version. Fixes black box problems and places you perfectly in your aircraft seat. Also I found that my detail still wasn't as sharp and clean as I hoped so I fixed this with 'oculus tray tool'. Setting super sampling to 1.5 or more while the in game setting only needed to be low. 60 or 70. Amazingly my fps stayed at a similar... ish level but the resolution/clarity was waaay better. Hope this helps.

Hey, first of all - a huge thank you for putting all of this stuff together! Extremely helpful and you save hours - if not days - of work for the rest of us. Question - with my rig there is a HUGE difference between flying e.g. the Piper Cub and the B747 when it comes to "screen studder" etc. I can have the VR graphics set pretty high all across the board in the Cub with no studder at all but changing to the B747 whilst keeping the same settings is like giving the CPU an aneurysm. It suddenly studders like crazy. I do realize that the cockpit of the B747 is much more complex graphically than that of the taildragger but I did not expect the difference to be that significant. Have you experienced the same and if yes - how did you tackle it? I guess one way would be to skip all of the more complex cockpits but that's kind of boring...
@OverkillSimulations
@OverkillSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Unfortunately what you're experiencing is a lack of optimization of the 747 cockpit in this case. Yes, the airliners require a bit more loving from the GPU. However, mostly their cockpits just aren't optimized well.

Actually, the graphic card's driver should be kept in an older version if you are on anything bellow the 30 series. Happens that nVidia is so busy on their newest products that they have left us (on 10 series and 20 series) behind. The newest drivers have been slowing the old graphic cards down. That's what I read and after going back to an older version of the driver I DID notice a huge improvement. I'm running a RTX2080TI. The driver I am using right now, as suggested, is 446.14. Give it a try!

The most recent Microsoft update is 20H2, and hardware accelerated gpu scheduling is not there. Instead, when I go to graphics settings, it asks what app I want to affect. MSFS 2020 is listed, and there is the option to either let Windows choose the best settings, a setting for best power management, or a setting for best performance. I chose the setting for best performance. Edit: I am using an AMD processor (rx5700xt).

Unfortunately the steps for Disabling Full Screen Optimization, messed up my system. Others have mentioned and I wish I had seen the comments, but changing the ownership of the WindowsApp folder first ended up causing my MFS to ask for the install CD. Tried to change the ownership back, but couldn't. Tried System Restore...did not work. I'm too tired to be mad, but others that have MFS on Game Pass be warned. The other tips are useful, as a workaround run MFS in windowed mode in VR so you don't have to worry about full screen optimization. I hope Overkill makes an update video and takes this one down.

Hate to be 'that guy' but unfortunately the mentioned steps didn't fix the judder issue for me :( There is also a current issue with the Nvidia drivers for SteamVR on 20xx and 30xx cards - there is intermittent frame dropping in every version after 446.14 (there's a thread on nvidia forums). Rolling back to this version fixes it, but the HAGS option disappears from Game Mode settings entirely. Either way, disabling full screen optimizations on the FS executable did not solve judder (how much money were you willing to bet btw? ;) ). All other steps have been followed to the letter. Running 5900x, 2080ti, 64gb 3600 corsair dominator and Sabrent Rocket pcie 4 nvme. Disabled all online data streaming to eliminate any possible outside source, I still have the judder issue (smooth frame rate but every 0.5 > 1 sec a 'jump'). Same with 446.14 or very latest nvivida drivers. My Windows 10 64 Pro is fully up to date.

EVERYONE should watch this video and not just people with performance issues in Microsoft flight Sim. I have ingrained all these settings to every pc I ever touch for past year or so ever since I struggled with escape from tarkov stuttery below 40 fps mess. Game mode off, game bar off, right click compatibility to disable dpi and change to applicatio as well as cnntrol panel settings first tab dragging to left towards performance followed by settong gpu to max performance and vsync to off vsync then changing physx to run on gpu and to finish it off I disable all the privacy options in main settings especially the background apps turn them all off. Man if I had to grade this entire video I'd give you 200% cause although there are thousands of performance boost options for games out there, no one is as thorough as you. I even picked up something new from you regarding reinstalling nvidia drivers with a clean install. You are a legend and I'm ecstatic to have found this channel.

Hi, thank you for the video, but I think most of it is either outdated or wrong. Let me share my solution. The video gives an overview of the possible adjustments and I used it as a starting point to play around with my settings. I have an Ryzen 5 5600X and had a Radeon RX 5700 XT with which I had not such a great VR experience with a Valve Index. A lot of picture errors and stuttering/lagging occured depending on the scenery. It was just too exhausting for the eye. I now switched to a Geforce RTX 3060 Ti and the experience was right away a bit better but not as much as I expected, so I spent some time trying out the different settings from this video but noticed that some of them even made it worse. From the comments we can see that this video helped many so it either is somewhat hardware dependend or things changed in 2021, honestly I don't know. One thing that did not work was deactivating the fullscreen optimizations, after doing so I had really extreme stutters, unplayable basically, much worse than before. Unchecking the box, restarting the game and it was much better again. So this did the opposite for me. I would also not recommend to change permissions of the WindowsData folder but luckily FlightSimulator.exe was inside the my steam library and not in this WindowsData path. Changing to maximum performance in the global NVIDIA driver settings is also questionable. For me it did nothing at all and I assume if you set this, it prevents the GPU to throttle down if you are in desktop, so it is probably just a waste of power. If you are in a game the GPU will boost to the necessary levels anyways and might still throttle for thermal reasons because you do not want to destroy the card just to get maximum performance. Also with the other presented NVIDIA driver settings I player around, did not note any difference and set them back to defaults. After also playing around with the SteamVR and the VR settings in MSFS I noticed some things that brought me to the solution. I flew a lot of turns over Rio de Janerio to test it. The integrated MSFS devtool fps monitor is not so helpful because you can hardly see it with the goggle. Instead I recommend to invest 3 dollar or so into the steam app fpsVR which shows a nice fps monitor while you wear the goggle. Now here is my solution: First of all you should try to get the smoothest possible experience. For that decrease everything to minimum in the MSFS VR settings. Especially the render scaling as this has indeed the highest influence of the framerate. Additionally you could also decrease the render scaling in SteamVR. Those render scaling settings in SteamVR and MSFS seem to add up on each other. So using the minimum of 20% in SteamVR and minimum of 30% in MSFS give you a horrible visual experience at low resolution but a very smooth one with the most possible frames. After doing so you maybe want to try those Windows settings, maybe even the deactivation of fullscreen optimizations, to check if any of that gives you even more frames. But as said, for me it did not. Ideally you have something between 60 and 90 frames now at these lowest possible settings. Because now we need to start spending frames and smoothness on sharpness and visual quality. In SteamVR the Valve Index can be set to a refresh rate of 80, 90, 120 or 144Hz. With some higher details you won't reach 80fps even with the highest end cards I think, so we are more targeting for something less. Ideally the refresh rate is dividable without residual through our target framerate and is larger than 25. The best number that fullfils that is 30fps with a 90Hz refresh rate. If you can reach 30fps then the picture smoothing can reproject each frame two times to fill up the 90Hz. The reprojection ratio shown in fpsVR will then be 66.7%. This high reprojection ratio will give you some microstuttering but it will still be comparably smooth and playable. If you have a really good graphics card or are happy to play at very low quality you can reach 45fps maybe. In that case the reprojection ratio will be only 50% and it will be even smoother. If your stable framerate is not a divisor of the refresh rate two things can happen which both are bad in my experience. Say you could reach 40fps at a refresh rate of 90Hz. Then it either tries to reach 45fps to reach a reprojection ratio of 50%, but your card can not handle it and it causes stutters OR it goes back to calculate only 30fps and target a reprojection ratio of 66.7% which leaves 25% of the cards potential in the dust. In fpsVR you can see that the GPU usage would actually go down then. So in case you can reach stable 40fps but your card can not calculate stable 45fps, then you maybe want to change the refresh rate to either 80Hz or 120Hz or increase details to go down to 30fps and stay at 90Hz refresh rate. Since 30fps is totally playable I would recommend to target for that: stable 30fps. That means frametimes indicated by fpsVR should not exceed 33.3ms in any case. So from the lowest visual settings in MSFS VR you can now increase until your frametimes exceed 33.3ms. I would definitely recommend to increase the render scaling back to 100% in both SteamVR and MSFS VR.This gives you a sharp visual. A lower settings in one of them and it can get hard to spot the runway from far or the PAPI lights next to it when even close to the runway. After that I would recommend to enable TAA in MSFS VR because this will make your instruments in the plane be more reabable. They will still not be 100% sharp though but as good as it can get (as of today after Sim Update 6). If you now still have no issues with the frametimes then you can increase other quality settings. Objects like trees and buildings really look ugly in low setting and they also show up quite late only when you come close enough which is a strange experience if suddenly trees pop up in front of you while you are approaching the runway. So medium settings are recommended. Now increase everything else to your likes until you exceed 33.3ms frametime. Some settings have bigger influence on frametimes than others, I think some settings have more influence on the CPU or memory than on GPU. Overall you maybe want to stay even a bit below 33.3ms in order to have some room left for higher demanding sceneries (e.g. Manhattan). Any exceed beyond 33.3ms will cause stuttering and you want to avoid that. So this solution now gave me a really smooth VR experience on medium details on my system. (On non-VR I can play Ultra settings by the way.) Anyhow I would still love to see MS and Asobo optimizing the VR experience for more performance and especially sharpness. So I am really looking forward to the upcoming updates. A long comment, but maybe this helps other VR simmers as well.

Ahhhhggg Overkill thank you first of all, your video was clear and concise. I must sadly say, however, that even with all settings down as low as they can go, I'm still barely getting 30fps, and as soon as I start increasing the settings, they plummet to unplayable. (I'm on Quest 2 using link, and my other Steam VR games run great) I have a Ryzen 3700X and a 2070 Super, with 32gb of ram. I can run MSFS on desktop at almost maxed-out settings in 4k. I'm desperate, do you have any other suggestions?

Please note: At 4:25 you suggest to disable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. That's great for VR, but if you do any sort of rendering work (Adobe Premiere Pro, for example), this will lead to significantly longer render times. So you'll need to switch it back and forth as need (makes it a real PlA that it requires a restart).

Thanks for the great guide! FYI - You should not assume that nVidia Control Panel / Power Management Mode = Max Performance is actually the best setting. The problem is that running flat-out can cause STUTTERING, due to thermal management kicking in. I recommend trying the different settings for that mode. On my FTX 2080, I've had the best success with Optimum Power (at least in other games). I will retry Max Perf for FS2020, to see if there's an improvement for that game.

First what a great video, very well explained and its made very simple to follow, unfortunalty i still have an issue, i updated windows 10 to the 20H2 But no GPU option to find.... all other options found and updated as told in this superb video. But stuttering all over the place, i was bumping my head virtually, unplayable unfortunately. Any suggestions. Intel i5 - 6600K. 3,5 GHz 16 GB. GeForce GTX 980 Ti. Maybe the system is not good enough ? I don’t have a clue anymore. Should i upgrade something here? Please advice. Thank you V much and greetings from Belgium meanwhile did some further tryouts and came back to the win 10 system settings, graphic settings page, still no GPU option, but saw the option . choose an app to set preference... desktop app and just under it browse, here i put High performance and saved it. so now it says VR Dashboard high performance and the stuttering was gone, so that made it much flyable now Dont have a clue if this was the way to do it on my pc, but it works fine now.. By the way. Tried same settings with X-Plane and waaauw just great. (Also changed the exe file setting) Again thankx Overkill Greetings out of Antwerp

@@OverkillSimulations I am not sure why, but it simply broke the whole store. Might be because I had a trail of the game pass and how they set up their system, I dont know. But what I can tell you is that Microsoft has not been able to help me with the issue, I am not a fan of how their store work and how the file structure it uses is. After this experiance I can not recommend anyone buying a game via the Microsoft store, as you wont have access to the file structure of the games. But I have tried to reinstall "on top" of the current install, but it did not work either. I tried following Microsoft instructions to reset and reinstall MS store, and now my next option is a clean install. I think you are on to something about that option being an issue, But I strongly advice anyone with a store install that want to try to change the ownership that it is at own risk and to back up your windows install prior to trying it.

I realize this video is a bit long in the tooth, but what I’m about to submit still applies. It seems curious to me that two big switches Microsoft has provided turn out to be completely detrimental to gaming with MSFS, so I’m thinking about the scenario MS envisioned when they came up with these optimizations, and how that differs from the scenario that Simmers play under. In an average game scenario, the main game process is the only process involved in the game, and there are no additional services like weather, map data plugins, air traffic services etc that a standalone game must “wait” for in order to perform its processes. But in flight sim, we do have all these other services running, and they can’t somehow be hampered by giving the flight sim 100% priority while putting the other services in the background, because the sim will then have to wait on those services to complete anyway, or may even be slowed down by time-outs etc, similar in the way that when your computer does not have internet, all sorts of other apps on your PC become slow or unresponsive and sometimes even non-functional. I’m speculating here, because I’m not really armed with the knowledge about the inner workings of MSFS or even Windows OS, but I think it is a valid observation. It is possible a way to test this might be to run MSFS without any plugins/add-ons or other external services such as live weather/live traffic/ATC and see if the GAME MODE and HAGS switches make a difference. If it did, we would have a path for Windows developers modifying these features so that they did work with MSFS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that setting the Power Management Mod to "Prefer maximum performance" will only draw more power when idling, but won't change anything when the GPU is heavily used, so won't change the FPS.

I also fly Condor 2, a glider sim in VR, there are no problems with this Sim VR or Monitor view. The difference with this Sim and MSFS is when Condor goes to VR the monitor screen stays as a mono view, unlike MSFS where the monitor duplicates the VR. Surely this is using unnecessary memory or whatever. So is it possible to stop the monitor displaying the VR view. If a screen shot is taken in Condor, it's a mono view, but with MSFS the screen shot is duplex or binocular view. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Wow Overkill, your killing me!!!! I thought I had my VR experience dialed in. Yeah, I was totally wrong. Your settings improved my VR experience by about 75 percent. I followed all of your settings. I had already followed the settings you showed on the MSFS 2020 forum. They are outstanding. But after watching your video and following everything you said to do, I then went to Oculus and went into the Rift S settings page. Was looking around and found another setting - Graphic Preference - and set it to Prioritize Quality. Not sure how much difference that made but the quality improved greatly. I have rendering settings set to 100. But here is the thing that absolutely blew me away. When it came to the graphics card setting you recommended I was totally amazed. I monitor my GPU setting in Task Manager. Before making the change my GPU was running at a consistent 97-99% and the temperature ran around 68-70 degrees. After making the change unbelievably my GPU consistently ran at on 2% power and 68-72 degrees. I have the Nvidia RTX 2060. It is smooth as silk. So I just want to thank you for the advice as it worked perfectly. Much appreciated....
