AV1 is an open and royalty-free video codec created in 2018 and designed for streaming video over the Internet and IP2 networks as a successor to VP9. In September 2015, Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Mozilla Foundation, and Netflix created the Alliance for Open Media to develop a free and open video format in response to H.265/HEVC. It can achieve a compression ratio that is 30-40% higher on average than VP9 and H.265/HEVC and 50% higher than H.264, the most popular video codec for streaming in 2019. AV1 therefore allows bandwidth usage to be halved compared to H.264, but on the other hand, the reference implementation (libaom) consumes significantly more computing resources than VP9 and H.264, both for encoding and decoding. However, the development of libaom has favored correctness and completeness with respect to the standard, to the detriment of efficiency; other implementations significantly improve performance.

Il peut atteindre un taux de compression supérieur de 30 à 40 % en moyenne à VP9 et H.265/HEVC et supérieur de 50 % à H.264, le codec vidéo le plus répandu pour le streaming en 2019. AV1 permet donc de diviser par deux l’utilisation de la bande passante par rapport au H.264 mais, en contrepartie, l'implémentation de référence (libaom) consomme nettement plus de ressources de calcul que VP9 et H.264, tant pour le codage que pour le décodage. Néanmoins, le développement de libaom a privilégié la correction et l’exhaustivité vis-à-vis du standard, au détriment de l’efficacité ; d’autres implémentations améliorent significativement les performances.
