Unless Microsoft plans on using a more realistic flight model. There will never be a comparison. Hell look at the simple thing of using the rudder. In FSX you can use the rudder without any roll correction which is completely unreal. In X-plane you HAVE TO use roll correction with rudder use or you’ll end up inverted.

The graphics were sub par even in 2006. FSX didn't take proper advantage of hardware acceleration and looked crude even at the time. That's why there is such a thriving 3rd party market focused exclusively on improving the look of the scenery.

You can't compare them directly because the ecosystem that has sprung up around FSX makes comparison impossible. Years of development cannot be ignored. For the dedicated flight simulation enthusiast, FSX today is not FSX out of the box. Period. Many of us have vast collections of addons that have made FSX a very viable simulator 11+ years after its release. If somebody were just getting into flight simulation, I can see XP11 being the logical choice. Its not that simple for many of us with all that we have added to FSX to make it the simulator it is, today.

FSX's biggest issue is its 32 bit limitations. It can be modded to awesome near-photorealism, but it will easily run out of memory if you try to push it. Pretty much every major plane has a high res texture pack. All the flight peripherals and hardware over the years is geared towards it. Really no reason not to re-release in 64 bit and let the community keep doing their thing. Every single downside here can be fixed by mods.

To be fair, for a simulator released in 2006, FSX has gone far above and beyond its potential, and still performs well today. Some people have FSX running with mods looking like most peoples' XP11 is now. The platform was solid as a rock back when it was released and it proved that with how much it's put up with over the years. I'd like to see XP11 in 12 years having the amount of mods, tools and edits of FSX, and still compete with the market of 12 years in the future.

I ended up returning it and not giving it a chance due to low framerates and assuming the game needed to get optimized and wasnt running well with some hardware. About the customizability aspect. In terms of aircraft, X-Plane supplies the aircraft editor and you can build the aircraft fairly easily without having to manually punch in performance data apart from the engines. In FSX however, the terrain can be modified more easily.

It's impressive that you got 520,000+ unique views ... I didn't think there were that many flight simmers out there that cared. But I must agree with others, why didn't you compare XPlane 8 (release in 2005) with FSX (released 2006) ... that would be a more accurate comparison. But after looking at your channel I can see most of your recent video's are XPlane11 (with add-ons) and TrainSim, couldn't find any videos for P3D V4.5x. If you do another compare video, try it with P3D V4.5x and equivalent add-ons for each product, and operate at 4K comparing graphics settings for each sim and how they perform at any given set of graphic settings and add-ons, location, and weather. You might also want to consider what you can do in XP11 that you can't do in P3D and what you can do in P3D that you can't do in XP11 ... if you're really trying to do a fair comparison? Videos like these don't change people's minds, but they do generate a lot of hits.

I would recommend that you do use add-ons for each as it's pretty rare for flight simmers of either or both platforms to operate without any add-ons. For example, for AS4 weather for P3D and ASXP weather for XP11, PTA shaders for P3D and xVision for XP11, Ground Handling Deluxe for XP11 and Virtuali GSX 2 for P3D, OldProp Chaseplane for P3D and X-Camera for XP11, OldProp particle effects (rain, snow, etc.) and XP11 effects (not sure if there is an aftermarket vendor for XP for FX?), FSLabs A320 for P3D and Flight Factor A320 for XP11, Carenado GA aircraft with PBR support for both. Orbx and Aerosoft would be good for scenery and airports with PBR support as they overlap both platforms. Stick to a basic set of add-ons that most simmers use.

Only thing that really lets xplane down for me is sounds, even with custom sounds you can't seem to get an Aircraft to sound exactly as it does in real life like you can with P3D and fsx, the default or eadt 737's for example sound nothing like the real thing, you want the engines to sound like cfm56's not like a bad synthesiser.

I switched over from FSX to XP10 about a year ago. It's been fun. Graphics wise it's pretty good. The realism is a tad better in XP10 but tbh I find myself missing FSX more and more. The payware aircraft are simply not even half as good as what FSX has. TBh the $60 aircraft for XP10 is seriously worth $24.99 at best with the exception of the IXEG 733. For $60 you get an aircraft where most of the button and switches are not simulated, the planes are absolutely wonky and fly horribly and the realism just isn't there. I'm not going to knock any particular payware companies, there's no point in that. I'm just disappointed with the products. I flew better payware aircraft from Phoenix Simulations back in 2002. I'm actually close to just buying another hard drive just for FSX so I can have my fun flying experience back with the better payware aircraft.

X-Plane 11 is taking its time to become a better Flight Sim from what I have been seeing. From performance improvements to adding features and such. However due to their current roadmap some in-game features will have to wait a while before we get to it such as ATC improvement and adding more aircrafts (not via modding) and more. Well, I see your logic with comparison these two, as they are the most used sims, but the comparison is very selective. ATC and flight planning is miles better in FSX. The sky (apart from evening sky) is much better in FSX, and the cloud modelling is a lot better. And you spend most of the time in the sky, so that matters. In general even vanilla FSX is very consistent - it has everything not super perfect, but on the same good/working level. X-plane is very selective - some things are amazing, other are very low-res, low-quality etc, and one next to another is kinda meh experience.

It's like you try to compare a 2006 Ferrari with a 2018 build Buggati! 32bit against 64bit? There is nothing to compare! FSX will only watch X-plane from behind not even thinking to go side by side! FSX after P3D arrival is all ready dead! I'll make these comments as a longtime FSX driver (not to mention an actual commercial pilot) who recently bought a license of X-Plane to evaluate it. It seems to me that X-Plane offers very good eye candy. The default scenery is much, much better than what comes with FSX or FSX:SE. Laminar Research claims that X-Plane's physics and flight dynamics are extremely realistic; I can't comment on how they made their models and certainly some of the flight envelope characteristics in X-Plane offer improvements over FSX. I can, however, say that for day-to-day flying, FSX is far closer to how a real airplane or helicopter handles in terms of basic flight maneuvers, traffic patterns, approaches and landings, etc. Now the negatives: Avionics - again similar lackluster to FSX. There are some improvements, like the GFC-700 autopilot on the G1000 is modeled much better in X-Plane, offering functionality like FLC mode for climbing to altitude, etc. ATC is absolutely DREADFUL in X-Plane - and I thought ATC in FSX sucked before! No control or altering of flight plans enroute, no ground control, departure, flight following, poorly modeled IFR filing and clearance delivery, lack of control in selecting approaches - I'll get to this shortly. Wretched phraseology. It just flat out sucks. And that's when I though FSX's ATC was terrible! BIG NO-NOs - IFR SIDS, STARS, and nav database are lacking or absent altogether. You do NOT develop a product for training purposes like this, Laminar Research, because it really limits what I can do when attempting to duplicate real world flying. Maybe it sounds like I'm bagging on X-Plane - and to a degree I am - but I expected better out of Laminar than just pretty eye candy without a whole lot of real world functionality. Now I do need to test how X-Plane models turbine engines as this is one area FSX REALLY SUCKS IN. I'll give the C90 and the Airliners a whirl later and see how they do, then report back. I also want to try out the Extra 300 in X-Plane because the Extra 300 in FSX flew like a Mack Truck as opposed the the sports car that it is in real life. Hopefully X-Plane addressed the edge of the envelope shortcomings that FSX had. Also kudos to Laminar Research for developing a rock solid product. As someone who had to put up with FSX constantly crashing, it’s refreshing to have a rock solid product available for use.

So glad I started simming with XP11. To be fair, while X-Plane does have way fewer aircraft, the few freeware tend to be pretty good, especially the Zibo 737-800. If you want to learn how to fly airliners, I'd definitely choose XP11 because there's the Zibo, which is entirely free and probably better than the PMDG NGX which is insanely expensive. And, as X-Plane 11 ages, more freeware aircraft will be put up for download. There's a 777-300ER in early development right now. Search for chai112's 777-300ER if you want to alpha test it.

The reason why people still use FSX is due to the fact that they want a real flight sim and not a game. I have both and so far when I load Xplane 11, I simply laugh and get upset for paying for this. IFR flight you need to talk to ATC every 4 seconds! Yes scenery is better but when you want a simulation as real as it gets, you get a real payware AC model like the ones available for fsx and p3d and you simply fly it after a lot of studying over the manuals. Xplane is still a baby and I do not know if they will ever get there. They need to go back to the drawing board if they aim for real simmers. Remembering how fsx started to get serious in 1998, I am a bit cautious on the development of Xplane. P3d is on the right track but still fsx though not in development anymore there are so many addons that indeed you can make it as real as it gets. However, never say never. The bottom line is that if you are a pilot or close to become a pilot Xplane is not the one to be called simulator. FSX and P3d is the choice BUT NOT WITH THE DEFAULT AIRCRAFTS. Default aircrafts do not worth the time even to load them.

I think a big plus in FSX are missions (okay they are buggy), a concept I really miss in X-Plane11 The standard scenery in X-Plane does not include buildings like Eifle Tower, TV Tower in Berlin and many more. Wearther, flight-dynamics, lights are amazing in X-Plane.

Zibo 737-800 in X-Plane is the best setup however, X-Plane can't easily project spot views (panels) on to multiple monitors like FS9 can.

BMX and scooter Vids because fsx has decade old physics. X-Plane 11 made its own, very realistic physics engine. and if you spend $800 more dollars than you will on the stock version, you can get an FAA certified simulator.

Different set aircraft views + camera movement keys ([CRTL]/[SHIFT] + [ENTER]/[BACKSPACE]. Record that (very slow) then speed up the video.

I just got XP-11 and the video is glitchy sometimes. The latest version still makes you change the throttle control to collective manually when changing to the helicopter. Another issue with xplane is ATC. You can't contact a tower when flying VFR for permission to land or transverse airspace nor can you call out positions at non towered airports.

According to SteamDB, FSX will see around 4,000 players daily compared to X-Plane 11 with only 1,500. You can still get a comparison in, kinda like how for example the FIFA series people always compare the differences (which are generally very few). 😉

That's just on Steam alone, a majority of X-Plane users will have bought the simulator direct, likewise there are also still a few FSX CD users out there.

I'm on the fence about buying my first flight simulator... and this might be an extremely amateur question but, does one simulator offer more buttons, dials and controls you can press inside the plane? Maybe Microsoft flight simulator is old, but you can dial in twice the amount of buttons to control your aircraft or X Plane might be newer but the game does more of the work for you. Or vice versa. Long story short, I want the one with more buttons to play with

That question can only be answered with another. How much money are you willing to put in? X-Plane has the most switches from the get-go and had a few mods to get aircraft to a decent quality. FSX base game doesn't come with much, but the add-ons are of a much higher quality.

If you're looking at offline flying, FSX by a long stretch. Laminar have never quite been able to succeed at ATC, even with recent updates to it.

it looks a bit like you're comparing ms fs 2004 to x-plane 11, why not compare current flight sims like Prepare 3d 4, ProFlightSimulator, FlightGear and of course DCS (combat only) to x-plane 11?
