I'm not a admin. I don't even work in IT. I just wanted to learn Powershell. I watched 30 mins each of 2 other video tutorials that claimed to be tutorials but were basically guys showing off how good they were in Powershell. I spent an hour and 3 commands were shown and not really explained. But this video here....15 mins in and I have learned enough to continue learning on my own if I had to and there is still like 15 more mins of video. This video paints a very clear picture. And I am having fun now rather than looking at "PS C:\> " and always having to copy paste something there I got from the internet. No more. I will learn this. This made it easy. Somebody get him a fruit basket...NOW!!...No?? I'm sorry bro....I couldn't get you a fruit basket. You totally deserve one though. In a nice basket. The basket matters. I liked the video though. Theres that at least. Thanks for posting this. Schooling mofo's since 2016

I took IT as one of my subjects but wasn't as interested due to the fact that it focused mainly on theory that I simply memorised rather than understand. However, a week ago, I out of sheer boredom got into coding! I started with learning html and css because I had an interest in website making and just created one on vscode. And then I was HOOKED. Pro tip...when you scroll up to read an example and are happy with what you found. Hit the space bar, you zip right back down to the current line. Jeffrey Snover was a linux/Unix guy who wrote Powershell and it was originally called Monad. He adopted a LOT of the Linux/Unix principles, adapted them, and made them better for Windows. This is why a LOT of the aliases are Linux commands that are commonly used suddenly doing for windows what couldn't be done before. I'm relatively new to Powershell so I plan to watch the rest of this series, but I just wanted to throw in that Linux is where a lot of this stuff came from. I have been able to utlize Powershell to great effect in a real world environment...built a print server in 3 hours...without migrating ALL of the busted drivers that came from the old one. Powershell is extremely powerfull, and I look forward to learning more about what it can do.

I like your attitude to Aliases - not to use for the beginner is a good idea, IMO. I have been frustrated by others using them in learn videos
@alanelston23302 жыл бұрын
I am a bit surprised you don’t use the ISE from the beginning (I notice you use it later). As a beginner learning, I find that extremely useful. I have the blue PowerShell window shown also in the ISE, so I can do all in parallel that you show, but also have all the extra stuff in the ISE, like for example Ctrl+j trom in the ISE gets extra help.
@alanelston23302 жыл бұрын
It could be that the ISE is better for me as I am interested in learning some simple scripts more than using single commands. I am more interested in scripting as opposed to System Admin troubleshooting. Also I know Microsoft Office VBA quite well, but know little else in programing. The VB Editor, which is used a lot in VBA programming, looks very similar to the ISE. Initially it seems to me that they work very similarly.

I don't normally comment on anything but I am currently in a degree program that requires powershell. Everyone in that class is miserable and clueless due to an instructor with a god-complex who literally told me that the 'why' a script works is not important-- only the outcome-- when I said I couldn't explain my answers and was up till 3 am googling hopelessly. Needless to say I learned more in this one video than I have in about a month of instruction classes so far. So, thank you for explaining these, and I will definitely be watching the others. As a Windows SysAdmin I've been avoiding Powershell for years. If I need to drop into it I usually Google the needed script, drop it in, do what i need to do, get out and never speak of it again. I'm genuinely curious as to why Microsoft decided to go back to the old DOS (I'm old enough to have grown up using DOS) days of a Command Line like engine to do simple and advanced Admin tasks that they already had years of GUI development doing the exact same things. Was it because of the rise of Linux and their command line admin shenanigans or trying to lower their security footprint with all the GUI tools or both? I can see the need for certain things, but many of those complex tasks could have been done in other ways with other scripting tools already in existence or vendor GUI tools. I'm curious as to why it was forced onto us all. It's just always felt like a retrograde step for me - and probably others and is more than likely the major reason why I've avoided it for so long to be honest. But, I'm giving it a crack now, enjoying your Powershell videos - I came here via your Sharepoint 2016 series as I am deploying it here at work ;)
@ShanesCows8 жыл бұрын
David - I can feel you. I went through a long period of anger when PowerShell was forced upon me. But then I moved to acceptance and then I fell in love. It is a journey but a good one, and a necessary one. If I can do anything to help let me know.
@RobertOkadar7 жыл бұрын
The main reasons for introducing it are enhancing possibilities of automation and removing an additional layer of complexity, which automatically also reduces an overall number of bugs. To program GUI is complex and very error prone. In the long term, it saves time and money, while retaining flexibility. GUI is never flexible enough as command line is.

So far, it looks like a strange combination of a UNIX shell and old VMS command like stuff. Interesting..... Then again, Windows is sort of a great-great-great(great-great) grandchild of VMS, both originally written by the same guy. Windows NT (WNT) is VMS with each letter in WNT being the letters of VMS just where each letter is advanced by one character in the alphabet. (v+1=W, m+1=N,s+1=T)
