As a German and European citizen, I sincerely urge you to report this to the European Commission using the "Complaint Form for Breach of EU Law" (can't link here sadly). In August, the EU Council ruled that Microsoft must enable the complete uninstallation of Recall and Copilot due to privacy laws. Making these features mandatory, as you can demonstrate and prove, constitutes a violation of that ruling.

What I think will happen next: - Logging into OneDrive will be mandatory alongside the Microsoft account. - Recall will have a mandatory minimal functionality on the system, like telemetry. - Recall files will be stored on OneDrive and therefore can be legally accessed by Microsoft because of their ToS and Eula. Microsoft wouldn't throw out a pricey feature like recall and let users get away with not using it.

I know that very few people including myself aren't gonna wanna hear this but it is actually the unfortunate reality. Windows although arguably the most popular desktop operating system and most likely the most pirated as well, what we all like to ignore or live against is that Windows is closed source (to the best of my knowledge) AND it has a license agreement, meaning that, like android, like iOS, we don't actually own any of these systems, they are borrowed, usually with a hefty price tag, and so we use our cheap, expensive and everywhere in between systems that are running on usually borrowed software, and we've been getting frustrated that this borrowed software keeps invading our privacy despite that being the intent from the gecko. Each new operating system is more and more intrusive, IF you ask me, that's by design. You don't just do everything all at once, it's too obvious, you get people on board and you gradually add to it so fewer and fewer people wanna leave. Like facebook and other social media platforms. It's not a solution by any means but if you wanna use an operating system that is just a little more free and you're willing to sacrifice corporate apps like MS office, Adobe Photoshop, then go with Linux, which STILL has a license but it's suppose it be free for all. If you don't wanna be spied on at all... I'd get rid of any computers you have. 😂And that won't be enough either because there's microphones from other people's phones that pick up the environment. Well with recall, the scariest part is that Microsoft admits that the master developers who solve problems they can’t, are in China. That’s reason enough not to give them access to everything that’s come across your computer in the last 6 months, ESPECIALLY if you have work computers with sensitive information like patents, specific user data, industry secrets etc.

I actually think they will go through with this myself, they clearly dont care about the enthusiast market anymore. a decision like this means they want that sweet sweet juicy data from the "average person" . so they can directly target advertisements to the midwits that ads actually work on. its a win for them in literally every way. (because you KNOW this will have a way to shove ads in your face). the amount of training data there is what they really want, which I suppose I understand, I just wish they were not so evil about it.

Let's be honest, for large corporations that have partnership with m$, it makes complete sense to be able to monitor everything done in the corporation and have the admin ability to have select key individual (c-suite) exempted. For everyone else, W10 or Linux is probably more than sufficient.

I've worked IT in three different legal systems in two continents. There are places where I've had to install actual spyware to be able to report and prevent crimes of thought as per local laws. For big corps, it makes sense if the spyware comes with the OS. Top decision makers often opt themselves out. I've had to clean a ransomware from a network of that. Could be nice if the general public moved away from m$.

@@sys_key3287 Exactly I've used Fedora as my daily driver for 2 years now. I work, game, and do video editing with no issues. There are some things linux isn't compatible with but the list grows smaller every month. Gaming performance continues to get better many games now with proton are with margin of error levels of performance loss with some doing better then windows.

Switched to PopOS on 2 laptops, 3 desktops (2 for kids) in my household 4 years ago. Wife still uses Macbook. Most games work fine with Steam. I also have a Steamdeck (that runs on Arch by default) and use Steam family sharing. My kids have never used Windows and are missing nothing.

I built my new PC last month and made a lot of research about Win11, I made a striped down version of it (custome unattend.xml file) , customized the explorer and even turned off windows update 2 days ago because I had enough of Edge re-downloading and auto-installing itself (1.5 Gigs of wasted space) and I just don't want it on my system. Will update Defender manually. So yeah, I'm not happy with Microsoft and they're sh*t and having to fight them is getting tiresome.

Yeah the only long lasting problem is Edge reinstalling every time WU runs (22 hours cycle). I don't really remember how I was able to stop Edge permanently from coming back even when I had Edge WebView, since I tried many combinations of known ways and some modifications of WU to stop it, while also not breaking WebView, but it is possible. It is just tricky to do so.

The details are fuzzy but IIRC years ago, if you uninstalled Internet Explorer it broke copy/paste for the OS. Nothing has changed.

Do you even know how much write endurance ssds nowadays have? Many of them exceed their TBW rating multiple times. Many 300TBW rated ssds still work after having more than 1PB written to them so stop crying about write cycles. It's more likely that your ssd will die from the logic board dying than because of write cycles. I have a really old kingston ssd bought in 2012 and it's still working even though i exceeded the TBW rating more than 2x

I will NEVER switch to Windows 11, unless the LTSC version does not have this. I don't even know if my computer is "young" enough to run Windows 11 anyway. I'll probably end up switching to Linux. All I need to do is get a Windows XP and a Windows 7 virtual machine up and running (as most of my software will run on them) and I'm good to go.
