Though this video was recorded over 5-years ago now, the crucial point you must remember when using Word is that EVERYTHING in Word has a style -- EVERYTHING. As such, when you understand how Word uses these (and as you've seen in this video these TOC styles are initially hidden from you) the jigsaw puzzle starts to come together. I say to others to forget learning anything else in Word except styles because once you understand these, the rest just falls into place. It's true. Yes. I replied to Chris also, but KZbin aren't showing it. It's because of your tab leader. You'll need to modify the style itself, but this is what you do: 1) Place your cursor in the offending place. 2) Press Alt,O,T on the keyboard (or Paragraph settings, then the Tabs button) and then you'll see you have a leader before that tab. Delete the leader (click none and then on Set or delete the tab if you don't need it). 3) Update the style. That's it.

This is fabulous and lined up the table of contents page numbers wonderfully. Thank you. However, I have some lines that have a double tab insert (so the space of two paragraphs instead of one) and these sentences need to be that way. By doing the number alignment which is right alignment, for some reason, all these sentences that need double left paragraph indentation are automatically moved far right with a series of dots across the page from the far left leading to the first word. How can I prevent this, please?

Your question's answered below but, first off, DON'T use tabs. I know Microsoft give you that option, but it's poor practice and will prove more problematic than you'd want. Instead, create a new style (call it First Para, Double Indent, or whatever) and then, in the Paragraph settings, set the First Line Indent to the distance you require. It saves you having to all the time. It's better, easier, more consistent and more reliable. When you need to use this design, just click on the style and it's done. With your leading dots, check your tab settings (Alt+T,O on the keyboard). The first tab setting will have a 'Leader' set [with those dots your seeing]. Click on the appropriate tab stop, set Leader to 'None', click 'Set', and then Ok. That'll fix it.

Hey, the paragraph symbols dont appear after ever number and when I try to find out where the tab measurement, there isnt one. My mom is creating a 6x9 paperback if that is a problem.

Select ONE line of the ToC ONLY and then press Ctrl+Shift,S to show the Apply Style panel. It should tell you what ToC style level is in use. Click Modify, then Format, then Tabs. That will show the Tab stops for that style. If you can resolve it and want me to, go here: www.wordforbusinesses.com, use the Contact/Assistance box in the bottom right, and then option 4. Please read all instructions there and you can send me the file to look at.

Hi Russ, Thanks for replying! I examined the document a bit further. Turns out the page numbering was even wrong so the Table of Contents was reflecting what was actually in the document. I have used the 'Find & Replace' tool to remove all the section breaks and everything is fine now. I will just start reformatting it again page by page. Thanks a million! Too technical for a non-tech person. When I am in Modify Style Box/ Tabs dialog box, under the Tab stop position, the information is blank. You go between TOC 1 and TOC 2. What is that and the purpose? How do I know what to put into the Tab Stop Position box??? Sorry not helping.
