It's our teardown expert Andrew's turn to sit at the microscope and today he's going to be replacing the USB charge port on a Samsung Galaxy S3. Watch as he creates alloys to make joints easier to solder! Marvel at his abilities to tin pads, and correct his mistakes when he bridges pads. Cheer him on in the hopes that all his efforts won't be in vain!
Don't have time to watch the full repair? Check out the highlights!

This was an excellent tutorial. Up until now, I've only been shown "Here's your iron, here's two wires. Wrap them around each other. Now melt the solder onto the twisted wires. Wrap in tape. Done." I've never seen flux, tin or a desoldering braid used before. It never occurred to me that the copper braid just sucks up melted solder like a paper towel. Thankfully I've never had cause to solder something like a USB port or the like, so I've never manage to embarrass myself on this sort of repair. Thanks and keep them coming!

This is an extremely useful video, and VERY informative. I've tried soldering USB charge ports in the past without a microscope and I can say with confidence that the microscope is a fantastic investment for improving quality of life. And really good tips with how to tack down the pins on the port. That's something I've been struggling with for awhile (mostly just because of solder bridges), but I never thought to take it one by one very quickly just to tack them and then clean them up later.

Thank You for this video! 3 days ago I managed to desolder broken micro USB port in my father's smartphone "ZTE Grand X In" and attach a new one! I did it with quite simple solder station (without HOT AIR) and Chip Quik - not Cheap at all ;) Everything without any microscope - only small (about 1 inch) 8x magnifying glass. I'm proud of myself and my father is happy again. Thanks - good job! :) Of course the new port was solder with a standard tin not Chip Quik..

When you are finished soldering, don't clean the tip before hanging up the iron. This will keep a layer of solder on the tip, and a barrier against oxidation. When you are ready to solder, clean the tip. : )

The Mini USB Type B Female 5 Pin PCB Mount just came adrift of my Seagate GoFlex adapter base. The electronix repair shop wanted about $40 USD to repair and for me to find & buy the part myself. Less than $2 for five from Amazon. After watching this I see why the repair guys get the big bucks. I won't be tackling this on my own. LOL. Jessa If I wanted to do this professionally you are the BEST teacher: imparting a real depth of understanding. I was transfixed.

I know it's an old video ! Very good tutorial and techniques your teaching ! question can you use no clean flux with regular led solder or just with only lead free solder ?? WHat brand of syringe flux works the best for you ! And what do you think about pencil bent chisel tips for fine pitch soldering ? some have a nice curve to get closer to very small capacitors and resistors !

This is the best tutorial on the internet... Hello iFixit, the usb port on Moto G4 XT1625 is impossible to solder with an iron (no matter how fine the tip) as the pins are hidden behind the ground shield. I want to use solder paste and heat gun to solder it in place. Do you have any videos using solder paste to solder inaccessible components? Thanks a lot!

"What do you think...." about me asking "what do you think" too many times? You're the expert. I am not here to hear what I think. YOU know the answer. I want to hear it instead of a question. Other than those distractions, I found this to be absolutely excellent. Thank you for the knowledge. Oh,, one question which maybe you answer later: If you use hot air, will the solder braid work or do you need the pressure of the iron to soak it up? And don't ask me what do I think!

@42:00 I would have used a solder sucker to save wicking. 20 years ago the "third hand" technique was putting the solder in your mouth and just leaning into what your soldering. Nowadays I just tin the trace pads well and use solder paste for the anchor pads and just hot air the whole thing, sometimes anchoring the new part with an alligator clip.

I don't tin the pads first. After i clean them i put the part on and solder them on. That insures the pins are as close as possible to the copper trace. If i bridge them i use used braid so it doesn't suck all the solder off, but leave just enough to provide a solid joint.
