Some of you have noticed my dyslexic mistake. In my clarification I say a range of 90-97% of fat was from carbs, no it was indeed 90-97% of fat from FAT. I was just trying to be transparent about the range observed ok different women. Too bad KZbin no longer allows notes on videos. This topic is really interesting and I suggest this extended reading: m.ajcn.nutrition.org/content/74/6/707.full 📖 📖 📖

Mic. the Vegan Around 2:17 you show a chart sourced from the CDC and make the claim that it shows smoking dropped 60% since '65. It looks like it was a basic math error, but it doesn't diminish the point you're making. Smoking actually dropped 25.6% according to the chart which is still A QUARTER OF THE POPULATION. Which is still huge!

Mic. the Vegan No worries mate, I'm dyslectic too. I've always respected vegans for not going with the flow (like dead fish). After watching 'What the health' I stopped instantly eating meat and taking dairy products. It was that little push I needed I guess. Thanks for debunking the hilarious 'debunker'. I knew he was full of it.

Hi Mic. I'm replying to this comment instead of posting a new one because I hope it'll be likelier that you'll see it this way. I am a 20 year old woman, I'm an environmental engineering student, and about 2 months ago I started exploring a mostly plant-based diet (I say mostly because I'm not perfect, I will admit that I have succumbed to the odd non-vegan treat) because I am and have been overweight for most of my life and, despite quitting drinking and smoking, I had a wide variety of chronic pains and discomforts in various parts of my body, including my mental health, and we had discussed the implications of the meat industry on the environment in class, so I thought I would give it a go. It looks like, so I would assume, that you have access to Sciencedirect, and so I was wondering if you could find any sources that prove a correlation or perhaps even cause-and-effect relationship between meat/dairy consumption and mental/emotional issues. I don't intend on proving that a vegan diet is an alternative to anti-depressants, but I must say that a combination of psychological therapy and a drastic reduction of my meat and dairy intake has majorly relieved me of most, if not all, of my symptoms, and also kept me medication-free, and I was wondering if you could perhaps investigate that. I could think that it's maybe to do with environmental factors, that perhaps a decrease in meat consumption equals a decrease in hormones that are ingested, and these hormones have an effect on mental and emotional well-being? Especially for women who take hormonal contraceptives who experience depressive side-effects, it might be a motivator if they could control their symptoms using diet. I unfortunately don't have access to the scientific literature and would really appreciate it if you could consider maybe making a video where you explore this topic in more detail, as you are the most investigative vegan KZbinr that I have come across. I know that you have addressed the emotional well-being in women in your video about the changes that your body goes through when you go vegan, but I'm hoping for a little more, I truly think there is some substance to this. Sorry for the long comment, I hope you actually read it, and thank you for helping me on my journey to a better life!

After film was over, I dumped them all, plus three quarts of ice cream and a quart of root beer into the garbage. Every time I screw up and eat the wrong stuff, I watch the film and it puts me back on track. ( 4 of those thighs, and all the ice cream and root beer was my lunch).

Don't get me wrong I think that a plant based diet is a great diet that can heal many issues and help a lot of people but I don't believe that veganism is one size fits all. I was a vegan from 12 years old up until 6 months ago. I felt great at the start of being vegan but slowly lost energy, gained mental fatigue and just didn't feel right. Most importantly, seeing as you are an endocrinologist I wonder what you can tell me about the fact that for the majority of time I was vegan I had hormonal issues. I took all of the appropriate supplements, I paired my foods for optimal nutritional absorption, I exercised daily and I was always at a healthy BMI and a low fat percentage. At the start of this year I was diagnosed with PCOS, i didnt have diabetes, insulin resistance nor am I overweight so there was something going on, whether I have inflammation causing hormonal imbalance, who knows. So i decided to go high fat, low carb and to add in salmon and essential fatty acid containing seafood with the occasional red meat or chicken. Don't get me wrong, I hate the taste, texture and idea of eating meat especially after being vegan for 10 years however, my mood has increased, i no longer have anxiety, depression or dissociation. I have lots of energy, better digestion and my hormones are slowly balancing out. now as an endocrinologist how would you explain that if veganism is a one size fits all?

Cool... did you know that Deepak Chopra was an endocrinologist? Regardless of whether anyone agrees with or is interested in his theories and assertions about consciousness... something that is related to behavior which, I was taught in psychology 101, the endocrine system is one of the main biological drivers of behavior.... I heard some doctors recently criticizing him for saying something about cortisol (sorry dont' remember the details)... but then saying he is not qualified to talk about such things. At any rate, endocrinology seems like an interesting field. I had considered going into medicine at one point... that was a field I was interested in after having taken my psy 101 course... I've been highly interested in biological bases of behavior since then.

great video? Yea if you trying to sound like an idiot. What does he know about nutrition? Doctors barely learn anything about food and nutrition in college.
@tulp_graphics5 жыл бұрын
@@andrecardoso1568 Well, when it comes to science, you can actually do research and read and learn about the studies that have been done so far. Mic is known for doing that and always posts links of his sources where you can check the information yourself. It's very unfortunate that doctors learn so little about nutrition and food and I believe that should definitely change. But it's all the more reason why I think this 'doctor' shouldn't make all these baseless claims. Where are his links to the studies that back up what he's saying? Also the childish way of responding would make me very suspicious if he was my doctor. It doesn't seem very professional to me. But hey, have your own opinion. We don't have to agree (although it would be nice if you wouldn't call me an idiot just for having a different view on the matter..).

@@tulp_graphics I didn't call you an idiot. I called him an idiot. Nevertheless you don't need to be a doctor to know this. Just talk with people that work in the meat industry. Where do you think these diseases come from? Also we are destroying our planet to produce meat. People should really consider to reduce their meat consumption or we won't have a planet for our children to live in.

The "Save yourself an hour and a half and watch a real doctor debunk it" temptation from ZDogg on his video description is one of many dirty ways he's trying to dismiss the points of the film - avoids his audience going into it informed. Seeing that in the description on his 'debunking' video while I was searching for "What the health" actually pushed me harder to watch the film before I checked out his debunking. Suggesting that your audience avoid checking the SOURCE should throw up a bunch of red flags for anyone watching.

There's an abundance of peer review papers that support the benefits of a plant based diet and the detrimental effect of animal consumption for both health and environment. The index of the superb 'How Not To Die' by Dr Michael Greger contains a large amount of references to peer review papers that he discussed through the course of the book. I receive a copy of the British Medical Journal even month due to wife job, and its evident that even the main stream, pharmaceutical lead health care institutions are admitting the horrendously negative effect of a carnivorous diet. Most especially dairy and eggs. All the research is out their people just need to be motivated to find it. It's not hard at all.

I did keto for over a year with my husband and recently went vegan due to the immense digestive issues I developed. I spent 3-4 months struggling through with serious issues such as (TMI) nausea, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, to the point that the last week I was on keto, I couldn't eat without doubling over in pain. Thats when I went vegan. Within the first 12 hours of being vegan, my entire digestive system was back to normal...but even better than before. My first vegan meal was made from things I already had in my keto kitchen. I wish I'd known how easy this way of life truly is...it has a reputation for being difficult and in my experience, keto is much more difficult. From "fat adapting" to carb cravings to my now very public digestive issues. Never thought I'd say this, but I couldn't be happier to be vegan.

With the lactose intolerant bit, since humans have first evolved (from Africa may I put in), we've been naturally lactose intolerant. Look at mammals. After you're a baby, you don't drink milk anymore in the animal kingdom. So why do we? Over time, we have made ourselves accustomed to milk and dairy. And since the dawn of time, our species started out as gatherers first, then hunters. But while we hunted, we still primarily focused on gathering fruits, berries, nuts, etc.

If you're only vegan for health reasons, I'm sure you can still be healthy while eating meat and dairy as a limited part of your diet. But I, like many other vegans, do it because of all the reasons combined, mainly the cruelty to animals part of it. The De novo Lipogenesis study you cited is a little misleading, the participants were fed a significant amount of extra calories from fat. A later study concluded that the reason de novo lipogenesis didn’t result in massive weight gain is that the body will always choose to store fat because it’s easier when there is a surplus of carbs that have to be processed. If the fat was taken out of the diet the participants would likely see weight gain due to the carbohydrates because they wouldn’t be second in line to the fat.

I almost threw up when I saw it, and I have never been tempted again. There are some really great documentaries about healthy eating, but, for this old bird, THIS was THE ONE to get me to change my eating habits. That pus grossed me out and changed me forever!

Well... I restarted my vegan diet about a month and a half ago because I was feeling miserable trying to follow a “healthy regular diet “. I’m eating lots of carbs from plants and I’m already loosing weight ( by the way, I haven’t even started exercising yet). Just saying “doctor “.

All these labels are throwing people off man, "doctors", "psychologists", "psychiatrists", it's all trash. It's like if two people both get there drivers license from the same DMV, are they both going to have the same skill at driving? Such trash what people believe these days when it comes to a label. The only labels I look for is whether something has meat, milk, eggs, cheese, or dyes tested on animals. I love you Mic, thanks for keeping it real!

I think you should pursue a bigger audience. Perhaps a documentary or television series. You have a gift. The way that you see the whole picture and know how to pinpoint and draw out important aspects that others overlook. You have a very holistic understanding of the issues. So I think you could organize and arrange a really great full length film or ongoing series. I mean I realize thats what you are doing with your youtube videos. But you would kill it with a larger audience and conventional structure . Your persperspective and gift for rooting out and conveying evidence and points should be used in a larger platform. You have all teh necessary skills and talents to be a huge voice.

I dont know this doctor but i already cant stand him. I came here hoping to be able to find justification for continuing to eat meat (after watching what the health) but i just feel pissed off about it lol. Maybe its time i changed my diet.

Mic, the rice diet was based on an extreme caloric restriction diet. Laws of thermodynamics can explain why glucose levels will lower with extreme caloric restrictions. However, that comes with a consequence that you pay for down the road, like malnutrition. Even basic undergrad science majors would laugh at the science they tried to use in this film. An 18% increase of cancer from meat? That's true but a real scientist would explain that the 18% meant relative not absolute. Researchers use relative numbers as a way to increase attention for their work all the time. That study resulted in an absolute increase of just under 1% increase of colon cancer from meat. Oh and btw, that small insignificant increase came from a study that was epidemiological. If you're not big into research I will give you a fun fact, epidemiological studies Have near zero validity to them in the science world. Processed meats are bad for you, dairy is bad for you. That's the only valuable information this documentary brought to the table. Natural meat and eggs have nothing but genuine controlled scientific studies that show human bodies thrive on these essential nutrients when eaten in moderation. I read the majority of the studies they used in this film and they left out the fact that they controlled the subjects fructose and grain intake on almost every experiment. That's why the patients had success, why did they leave that part out? I'm sorry mic, I love the vegan motives, and respect the hell out of your passion, but do not try to justify it through science. Now you're disrespecting my passion.

Mike Miller Lol, where are your sources? He showed a study where a small increase in dietary cholesterol (can only be found in animal products) caused high increases in blood cholesterol levels of low cholesterol people.... where are you getting this moderation bullshit from? Where you even paying attention?😂

This is well done. I'm not sure what to think after watching what the health, but I am strongly leaning toward Veganism. Can anyone back up being a vegan....? I mean my grandmother is Mexican woman who grew up on a heavy Mexican diet of Steak, Chicken, pork, cheese, you name it. She is 82, but does have high blood pressure.

SMS Well eating animal products is kind of like playing Russian roulette with your life. The probability of you having a problem that could have been prevented is extremely high but sometimes people get lucky. That's all it is. Most people die from diseases that could have been prevented on a plant based diet. I suggest reading 'How Not To Die' by Dr. Michael Greger. That book changed my life.

Hey SMS, a bit late but I have been vegan/vegetarian for 3 years now and have recently had a full blood work done. I didn’t mention to my doctor that I was vegan because I wanted the results to speak for themselves and they came back all in healthy zones- no problems and my doctor never even asked what my dietary preference was! I hardly get sick, a cold 1 or 2 a year but it doesn’t stay long and I am back at it within a few days so I would definitely vouch for a vegetarian/ vegan healthy lifestyle 🌱

Honestly, you’ll wonder why you worried about it. Mexican food is super easy as a vegan as there are veggies and grains a-plenty (well, there should be!) as well as meats. Your g’ma and family might not get it but stick to your guns. This is your health and your life you’re worried about. They will come around eventually. But maybe you’ve already experienced this by now haha!

It's not fair to compare our ancestors to present day humans. *I'm no expert* but I think that perhaps the ancestors who ate meat lived for a shorter amount of time because they had to hunt for their food. Gatherers had a constant supply of food as they planted and then harvested their food and didn't have to count on the variability of the prey. Of course they still had to consider nature and disasters but... Present day humans don't have to hunt or gather, they simply stop, shop and pay. It's different. If the population that relies on meat can no longer hunt for their food, they will die. If the population that relies on vegetation and crops can no longer plant their food, they will also die. However, that is less likely to happen. Like I said before, *I am no expert.*

what these diet documentaries neglected: exercise. in which all our ancestors had to workout to get food be it hunting or harvesting

So glad you made this video and put that negligent horses ass in his place. I'm am currently in my first inpatient internship as a student and find that approximately 80% of the patients I come into contact with have DM2, HTN, CAD, obesity and ESRD. It's unreal. I watch their meals of bacon, sausage and eggs covered in cheese arrive for breakfast and wish I could help them. Not a lot that can be done once you're on dialysis, but the lack of awareness is astonishing. How detrimental to have so-called MD's like this guy, putting out emotional and reactionary opinion pieces because he's too lazy to read research. What happened to evidence-based medicine? He clearly doesn't give a shit about helping people, only the views he gets.

One of my biggest regrets in life was watching What The Health just a week ago. I’m trying to go vegan now. But still looking for stores in my area to source some of my goods which are not too expensive. My cholesterol levels are above normal and I’m hoping for an improvement with being vegan.
