Opening and cleaning it will help as will fresh thermal paste and installing the maximum amount of ram., and an ssd., Linux Mint Mate version should work well, as would Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 /LMDE 6.

I ran Ubuntu for 14 years, but I found Debian a better fit for 2010 imac. It supported devices and wake from Suspend a bit better. I do want a core 2 imac to run my jukebox software, but they are too often priced like a collector's item. It's just an old system that won't do much, or it wouldn't be on ebay.

SSD + RAM Upgrade + New Thermal Paste + Your choice of light Linux. I would go Linux Lite, Lubuntu personally.

Hello! I have an imac 2007 20 7.1 with el capitan and I can't install macos ventura or newer. it recognizes the usb with the installation, but after I select the usb disk, a lock icon appears. Could you help me please?

I don't think it would be possible. You could try a virtual machine, but it probably won't run very well
