Just some food for thought on shaft testing on machines vs real world. I tested (indoors on a launch monitor) a few years ago as a 4 handicap in my late 50's to determine correct shaft for my game. After testing numerous shafts, varying stiffness and manufacture, I discovered I hit the DG s300 farther, as much as 10 yards, than any other shaft I tested. So, obviously I had my set made with this shaft. Real world results were the exact opposite; I hit the DG s300 10 to 15 yards shorter on the course. I had to reshaft my irons with a reg flex softer tip and lighter Nippon shaft to get my distance back. So, I am not a big fan of launch monitor results. Go to an outdoor range and hit the shafts there for real world results.

Great vid again. I like the fact that you are a good mid hAndicapper testing clubs, shafts, etc. As a 15 handicapper, I can more relate to it rather than listening to a scratch pga professional - what they want out of a club and how they will hit it is a different world a to the game I play.

Great video this, I changed last year from an old Fujikura stiff to a Hazrdous stiff when I changed driver (after 12 years), The hazrdous feels completely different to my much loved Fujikura. Going on from something you mentioned in this video, I'd love you to do this exact same test on a different day to see if you get similar results or if your 'swing of the day' is a defining factor. Really enjoying these videos lately, top stuff.

When I got fitted for my new irons and wedges I tried all different shafts and went for a heavier shaft as I could feel were the club is in the swing more and helped with timing and tempo

The feel and timing is important, especially with the numbers being quite close. I got fitted for PX 6.0 from S300 in my Mizuno irons. Similar but the 6.0 felt a bit better. I think its flex is similar to an S400. I also found for me that the stiffer the shaft the straighter i hit the ball!!

I think this is right for a stronger golfer who can play a S 400. For me the lighter shaft is the only option.

Very good Lee, I will have to go for a fitting as back into golf after 15 odd years absence and now 65 years, I have regular shafts but dont seem to hit as well as I used to, maybe a seniors or ladies shaft might suit me nowadays,

During my 20's and 30's I used the s400 True Temper, by early mid 40's it was the s300 shaft but still liking the 130 gram type shaft. Then came the late 50's early 60's I went to lighter 90 grams regular steel shafts that helped my kick the ball up higher with more carry ( for me anyway ), now in my very late 60's it's regular graphite Iron shafts, they feel better and don't wear me out. Love the golf tech videos, thanks.

Interesting test. It would be of interest to se you hit the S400 vs the R300 and the S vs R of the other shaft. When do you recommend the R vs the S to a customer?

Cheers Lee, really like the way you tested them. They need to stop calling Irons by the number 6, 7, 8, etc, and just put the loft on them. Its crazy the variation in lofts, that 7 iron has a lower loft than my 6 iron does. Is this an ego thing that club makers are doing to make players feel better? Thanks for the content, good to see when its missing from other channels.

Learn’t many years ago that as a player I am sensitive to the bend profile and weight needing something that is stable in the tip and butt section while offering some give in the middle. Probably for the last 10 years I have used Nippon Shafts. Currently using a combination of Modus 105 in irons and Modus 120 in wedges having used the NSPro 1050 in irons and super peening (orange) in wedges for a number of years.

Thing is you aren't giving up 5 yards, the club has to send it the distance you need to cover. Maximum distance is an incorrect measure on irons.
@jaypeegolf3 жыл бұрын
Depends on your personal expectations. It appears max distance is a buying trait in many and an overriding theme in Lee’s videos. The comment ‘if I need to really get one out there’ is particularly prevalent, even with wedges?? Lee it appears you would you rather ‘gain’ 5 yards than hit it straighter? I’m in total agreement with you Derek by the way! 👍

Great stuff, strange that there's marginal difference between a heavier shaft Vs a lighter one ( 1Mph and 30g difference) when "most" are going for ultra light shafts in drivers to increase club head speed ? Enjoyed your video on graphite in wedges but that seemed to be a different story ? Good content as usual 👍

Another very interesting test Lee. I didn't get fitted for any of my clubs but just adjusted to them from my old ones. Makes sense now to get fitted next time I buy clubs. How about trying for a hole in one with the s400 7 iron on that same simulated hole you just used? It certainly gets close. Cheers

Dispersion looks slightly better with the lighter shaft but again is it better to have more distance or more accuracy but then again there are many different weights in shafts now days
@jamesturnbull18943 жыл бұрын
More accuracy for sure in an iron and a decent length dispersion..
@superduperawesome68583 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree its all about strike. What happens if you look at a couple of the shots with similar results for each shaft rather than averages? I'm guessing the same?

@LWG3 жыл бұрын

@shirleyosborn39043 жыл бұрын
Can you explain standard deviation
@LWG3 жыл бұрын
standard deviation is a measure of the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of values. A low standard deviation indicates that the values tend to be close to the mean of the set, while a high standard deviation indicates that the values are spread out over a wider range.

I wish you had tested the same weighted stiff shafts in different brands. Shaft weights do suit different players but,as you said, most players think all stiff shafts across all brands are the same. I have definitely not found this. I think once fitted it is more accurate to say "this iron shaft weight suits me!" Rather than "I always have to use stiff!"
@anthonybennett42743 жыл бұрын
also the heavier shaft gave you closer dispersion which found the green also good content
@paulmilsom13463 жыл бұрын
Interesting comparison Lee, it may be completely different from a grass lie, you would probably be hitting the ball higher on the face for a start
@ianburton92233 жыл бұрын
Just how much skill in ball striking does a player need to detect the differences and make a choice. 12 years ago I was playing off 13 and had regular results from most of my shots. This morning on the simulator in the garden I was hitting my new driver at all points on the face, and having a lot of difficulty hitting the same shot twice. So how would I be able to tell if the shaft made any difference now that I play off 21 and need a buggy to get round the course. May be a miracle of biblical proportions would help me more than a club fitter.

Good stuff Lee 👍 one thing, is it possible for you to edit sound so that your breathing or (when there were cold) sneezing doesn’t come out so loud when you’re hitting balls? When watching with earplugs like i do most of the time it comes out quite loud. Just a thought.

I am on the "get fitted" band wagon, but do you not think your body reacts to different shafts, I usually play Xstiff and following a snapping incident I played a regular waiting for my repair and managed to play them both with similar results
@LWG3 жыл бұрын
It’s so hard to answer as each person is different. I feel people just get used to the results a club gives instead of it being the best option.

I love the advice 👍🏻 I will be honest I did believe all stiff, reg and flex where all the same so massive eye opener. Does it make a difference in wedges tho? Keep the great videos coming
@carlincledon47943 жыл бұрын
I don't know if this is correct but I've always used a softer shaft in my wedges as I don't tend to hit full on shots with them, but I think there is a big difference in your 'feel' shots around the green between stiff and softer shafts.

Reality is that like all club fitting/testing, the player has the most influence. Go for looks and feel. The 6 inches between your ears has the biggest impact on your game.
